Wireless connection
Both the jeep thing and the artillery tractor are mounted with No.11 wireless sets. Not typical of either. Testing perhaps? Oh, and the ass end of a carrier in front on the FAT. Another 11 set 'just out of view' I suspect.

re: jeep thingy, can we tell or guess when that photo was taken?
WS11 were in short supply here in Canada and in June 1943 Ottawa requested from London that 200 WS11 sets be sent here for training purposes. I wonder if it's Canadian made or English. |
Given the rubber tail light on the carrier (early), the 11 cab (I think) CMP FAT with 'Canadian' style markings on the door plus the denim battledress on the jeep(ish) driver, I bet Canada, around 1941. Then there's always the licence plate that says Ontario, 1941. I bet Petawawa or Borden. It's not certain, but the face of the 11 set in the ban-jeep-tam looks light. Canadian sets were green-faced, British ones black.

Excellent background finds, Keiths!
Here's another one. Noteworthy is the camouflage and the spare fitted to the front bumper. I believe this picture was taken in Italy. H. |

CMP behind Chinese replica Lancaster
You'll need to watch the vudeeo (Video in Kiwese) to see it in this news story of the remake by Peter Jackson of the Dambusters. Intriguing.

Thanks for the link to www.3news.co.nz
The story about remake of the Dam Buster movie was interesting. But I also enjoyed just browsing around the rest of the site, little bit like the old days of listening to shortwave to get a news perspective from other places.

Mystery P-40
Gents:
Found this on an aviation website! Consensus so far is that it was taken at Labuan, North Borneo. Any thoughts on the tail marking on the P-40N (RAAF)? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/10...steryP-40s.jpg Al Davis |
Thoughts on the Tail Marking
Al,
I believe that this is the "Frill Neck Lizard" which was the informal squadron insignia of the 3rd Squadron. This squadron was based in the Mediterranean Theatre as part of the Allied Desert Air Force. (later the First Tactical Air Force), supporting the 8th Army. Regards, Jim |
Mystery P-40
Jim:
I would have to go with North Borneo. Note the SEAC markings on the upper wing and fuselage. Conjecture is that it is an a/c of either 4 or 76 Sqn RAAF. Upon closer examination, the tail marking would appear to be some type of mythical bird. The part above the head would be the starboard wing of the bird and the tail is clearly visible just below the small black horizontal line on the tailfin. It's not a "side on profile" it appears to be more of a 3/4 side view of the beast. Al Davis |
