Hi Peter
When Brian, Mel and I came for a visit you mentioned your son was on the fire department in Fort McMurray. The fire chief was on Toronto radio tonight and said that they have lost 1800 homes so far with the wildfires. He also said Highway 63 was shut down so the evacuation of the 88,000 residents is kind of stalled. I guess the road is plugged with people out of gas trying to make the four and a half hour drive to Edmonton where the evacuation centres are. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

Tragedy

Barry,

Thanks for your kind words. Our hearts are not only with our family, but with all the people of Ft McMurray as they cope with this tragedy.

Guys,

With the information provided by Rick Cove and the aid of some sketches from the operators manual I had enough information to take to my local engraver and have a new one fabricated. These small items can be just as rewarding as the larger components.
I cannot begin to think how difficult this process would have been without MLU and it's members. I quite like Phil Waterman's words on the subject of "paying it forward".

Great work, I might see if I can get some of my plates done up for my HSC, been looking for someone to make some.

Plate

Lance, I was pleasantly surprised when I first approached my local printer/engraver. With a scanner and computer controlled engraving it turned out quite well and was very inexpensive.

Guys,

MLU membership has made my restoration much easier, I just didn't recognize how far and wide the MLU extends in this internet age.

Rick Cove has assisted me tremendously with information and advice. In addition Gina Vampire had generously provided me with some paint samples of the interior.

After many months of procrastinating, I stripped out the crew compartment and painted it.

Makes a dramatic difference. Summer activities are now having a significant impact on my garage time, but it's a great motivator to look into the crew compartment and recognize how far it has actually come.

Great thread

Your local engraver did an excellent job with the capacities and shift plate.. I've yet to see a reproduction here which is worth having.

Looking for help

Guys,

Had a great visit with my grandson, Chase from Ft McMurray. We made a trip to Ottawa and the CWM to visit their Lynx and firm up some details and get measurements for various bits and pieces. I certainly appreciate their policy of allowing me access to their Lynx. One disappointment was that their "radiator splash plate" is missing, and no visible method of securing the lower oil cooler brackets. Any help would be appreciated.
I am also looking for a good picture of a data plate for a Ford Lynx 11. I do have a good one of the Publication plate.

Thanks, Peter

Ours has the splash plate, but there is no way of getting a decent photo without tearing off all the rear armour housing. Afraid I just doesn't have the spare hours right now for it...still playing catch up with a half dozen projects neglected during the spring.

Afraid ours does not have the data plate in the location given in the manual.

Thanks

Rob,

Please do not tear things apart on my behalf. You have more than enough on your plate. Thanks for checking out the data plate. Sadly these plates seem to attract sticky fingers.

Guys,

Trailered the Lynx to the FMVA Bivouac, in Odessa, on Saturday. It was great to see all the green iron and reconnect with folks from the military vehicle community.

Th Hammond barn was well represented by Bob Carriere and Grant Bowker. Bob and his C15 competed with public transit to see who could haul the most passengers. It certainly sounded sweet tearing around the circuit.

Nice to dream that some day the Lynx will make it to one of these events without the trailer.

Guys,

Thanks to some great MLU networking, I was introduced to Markus Muellner. This talented individual used a computer, scanner and 3D printer to cut me reproductions of my data and publication plates. Once riveted into place they are indistinguishable from the real thing. Also had the last of the radiator shrouding fabricated and now the oil cooler is properly secured. Small steps but quite rewarding.

3D printer ? So are your plates made of 3D printed plastic painted silver or what? Very ingenious solution.

Actually they are milled aluminum using a CNC router.

Markus,

Thanks for clarifying the process.

David,

I can attest to the quality of the plates. While the back side is flat and unfinished the front is exceptional and personalized with all the correct information.

Thanks for the clarification. They are a beautiful piece of work Markus. I was just confused by the reference to 3D printing ! ..... Actually I am confused by lots of things these days !

Engine update

Guys,

I was very fortunate when Dave Good agreed to undertake the rebuild of the 239 engine that my friend Doug Lavoie had tracked down for me. The attached pictures will show why I feel so good.

Guys,

While I do not have the talents or skills to perform tasks such as rebuilding the engine for my Lynx, I pride myself for being able to persuade Dave Good to undertake this task. The attached pictures speak for themselves.

Another learning curve

Guys,

Due to an unplanned opportunity I now have most of a Wireless set No. 19 Mk 111 Canadian for my Lynx.

My knowledge of radios is even less than my limited electrical knowledge. So I took a similar approach to my wiring fabrication and built a plywood mock up of the rear of the crew compartment. Much easier than trying figure it out inside the Lynx.

I am now looking for a good copy of "Installation Instructions for Wireless Set No.19 Canadian in Armoured Scout Car (Ford-Canadian Lynx). PC 76471C-192, Jul. 1942. Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks, Peter

Colin, don't worry, I am just helping Peter out with the info I have. I don't have the set that you have, just some pages from SC- F1and F2 dated May 43. The set you have looks great and is much more informative than my 6 pages..
Regards Rick.

My thanks

Lynn,

I am glad that some of my pictures have helped. I know that if it wasn't for MLU and it's members that my restoration project would be struggling and no where near as rewarding.

MLU membership

Guys,

I just received the installation manual for the 19 set for the Lynx. An incredible and original document. I must add Colin Alford to the list of MLU members who have made significant contributions to this restoration. It is quite humbling to recognize the amount of support ranging from advice, pictures, components and now manuals.

Thanks to all, Peter
