This picture must have been taken during the first few years after WW2 in Germany. As far as I know the Canadian Army did not use VW Beetles, so the Bedford and CMPs in the background were most likely British.

... is this a Blitz in the background? If yes, then its quite a rare pic. On the left side you see an open and closed cab GMC CCKW.

Hi Alex and Hanno
Thanks for your quick reply. I think the Swiss Army used the round canvas design so the rain or snow could easily just fall off by itself. If you look in this Swiss Blitz thread, all of them have the "round canvas design". |
Hi Chis:
This may be "Urban Legend" but I have also read that the Swiss used the rounded canvas tops to be able to navigate the"Upside down "U" shaped" tunnels found on the roads in the Swiss Alps. Based on photos I have seen of the tunnels, especially the smaller ones, that appeared to be one way traffic at a time, that made sense to me. Bill |

Is that a cab 11/12 lurking behind the "German Sherman" ? Got quite a ring to it....

I think Hanno's picture is one of the Matador conversions using a Hyster crane to produce a recovery vehicle - which all had a Canadian 15cwt body added behind the cab.
Thinking about it - some Federal/Trailmobile combinations in the Middle East had a 15cwt body fitted at the front of the trailer [as a storage box] - so where did all the spaare 15cwt bodies come from; were they left over from some conversion of the 15cwt or were they taken from stock leaving a number of chasis/cab units which were then used for what?/ - sort of a chicken and egg question. Just a couple I have found "trolling" aviation websites. Don't think they've been seen before on this site. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/10...icArchives.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/10...YorkandCMP.jpg Al Davis |
