Thanks for the great pictures. I particularly enjoyed the second picture, you need to be good on vehicle recognition to spot the Lynx under the crowd. Must of been quite the moment for all involved.

There appear to be several versions of a windscreen. This is the version for my mark of Lynx. Limited to driver only, and the windshield wiper is hand powered.

Some XII Manitoba Dragoons Lynx scout cars

Hereby some photo's from XIIMD Lynx scoutcars.
We see cars from 1st Troop, 5th Troop, 9th Troop, 12th Troop and 20th Troop.
Look at the twin mount on 20th Troop car 204 (D-squadron) sporting both a .30 M1919A4 and a .50 HB machine gun.
The .50 has been adapted and now has right hand feed.
The Bren was used also as shown on the car from 5th Troop.

Great pictures! Just the type of pictures that I was hoping to see. The field modifications to increase storage with the use of ammunition boxes,gear on the engine deck, accident damage and the additional firepower. The 0.30 Browning seemed to be popular with the lads from Manitoba. Both versions of the Lynx also appear to be in use at the same time.

Decided to focus by putting aside the more cosmetic portion of my restoration and concentrate on the engine and running gear. Progressing well. Now at the point with the engine compartment that when I drop a tool it doesn't always end up on the garage floor.

Guys,

Finished mounting/assembling all the key electrical and mechanical components of the running gear. Time for some "due diligence", so I took the Lynx off to my local mechanic to ensure that it starts and stops, the way it was designed to. Eerie sensation to enter the garage and find the Lynx missing.

Kept myself busy by disassembling and straightening the engine covers and hatches. Now off for sandblasting and primer.

I'm now looking for four "stud and handle" assemblies to secure the engine covers to the hull. Here's hoping they were also used for another vehicle.

Ferret Mattock head retainer
 

Look just like the Ferret Mattock Head clamp. I wonder if the Ferret is BSW or NC/AF in thread form?

Thanks for the heads up regarding the Ferret possibility. I have access to one locally. If I can source some solid handles, I think the rest of the assembly would not be too hard to recreate. My receivers are 5/8"NF.

Chris Jones, the owner of the local garage that we use, has parked the Lynx in the back end of his shop. When he has time between regular customers he is "fettling" the Lynx. The engine runs, but he has been chasing leaks (my work on fuel and brake lines) and repairing 70 year old NOS parts (electric fuel pumps, starter switch, circuit breaker and more). Hopefully the drive train won't be too far down the road. Fortunately for me, Chris is an individual who enjoys challenges.

The ferret is also UNF, so you will be in luck there.

When I worked on the lynx at the RCA museum, I was missing thos knobs as well. Three of them eventually turned up inside one of the stowage boxes for a C15A gin palace. Never did find the fourth. I knew I had seen something similar before.....I think Jim may be right.

Lynx's in Canada

I'm aware of four other Lynx's in Canada. The Lynx 1, mk 111 that was Brooke Quam's and was on display at the CMEC in BC. The Lynx 1, mk 111, owned by Reg Hodgson, in St Albert, AB. The Lynx 11 that is in the RCA museum, in Shilo, MB. And the Lynx 11 that is in the CWM in Ottawa, ON.

Does anyone know of any other Lynx's in Canada? I seem to remember some stories about a Lynx 11 in Georgia, USA.

CWM in Ottawa should have one and a couple of partial hulks used to be lurking in Western Canada at one time.

At the risk of hijacking this wonderful Lynx thread, the number of Lynx survivors is remarkably similar to the number of Fox ones: two in the same museums (Shilo and the CWM) and three privately owned, though one of those in is Utah.

I haven't heard of any other Lynx in Canada, whole or hulks.

I thought that there was one in Toronto somewhere...about a decade ago..

There's a photo of me sitting on top of one in the film 'Dieppe' in a warehouse in Toronto around '92, don't recall who owned it.

This is a cell phone pic of the colour photocopy I have so quality isn't the greatest.

I'm almost certain that's the one currently in the CWM. At about the time of that movie the Oshawa 'Ferret' club was doing work on if for the museum. Many local vehicles were included so probably the Lynx too. I once owned the C60L on the left side of the photo and at the time of the movie it too was owned by the Ferret Club.

Another historical note regarding the Lynx in Canada: The late Dr. Bill Gregg brought three of them to Canada from Greece in the late 70's or early 80's. Apparently there were a dozen to choose from but I guess three was all he wanted and I don't expect the rest met a happy end. Of the three, two are in museums as noted (the Shilo museum in Manitoba and the CWM in Ottawa). Bill Greg kept the third after he sold off his entire collection and it eventually was sold to a collector in Denmark.

Regarding at least two of the 'hulks' in Alberta, one is still here and was painstakingly rebuilt from bits that had been strewn about a yard. It was (is?) recently for sale. The second was sent to the Leegwaters in Holland.

The vehicle Russ sat on was owned by Bill Gregg at the time and driven by his mechanic & restoration wizard Stew Robertson. I remember Stew taking me ( and many others) for a ride in the large lot behind the warehouse at the time.
Couldn't say whether this one ended up at the WM or elsewhere. Good chance Stew will know and add a comment. B.P.
ps -participants in that movie event will remember an amazing set outside the front warehouse door that consisted the entire side of a ship at dock!

If memory serves correctly, Bill Gregg did, indeed save three Lynx from somewhere in Europe where about a dozen at the time were destined for the same fate as Peter's. I think they were all ex Greek Army. Bill found three virtually complete, originally equipped vehicles in the bunch, all three of which bore traces or wartime Canadian markings.

The only way to get them to Canada uncut was to get the Canadian Government involved in some way. A deal was worked out that Bill would provide one to the CWM in Ottawa, a second would go to Edmonton and he would keep the third. For this, the CAF provided transport to Canada.

When they arrived, the CWM took possession of theirs, the other two heading to Bill's home in Rockwood. Some time thereafter, the deal for one to go to Edmonton collapsed for some reason. Bill retained the two he had until one went with his collection to Shilo. The third one he kept and was either sold just before he passed away, or possibly sometime thereafter.

Thanks for the clarification guys. Bob, I was looking for you in Oshawa this year but don't think we would have recognized each other, I'm catching up fast. I have pictures I took of that dock set, both up close where it looked real and from a distance with all the scaffolding. My favourite scene was when they had everyone load into all the vehicles at the end and they all streamed out the back of the warehouse, but it ended up on the cutting room floor. That area is all trendy condos now. There were also some good shots of all the trucks parked at the airfield in Picton taken from the top of one of the hangars.

Very interesting, my Lynx, according to what I've been told was shipped from Greece to Canada and then some time later came back to Europe. It went through several big time collectors before I bought it in Luxembourg. I wonder if its the third 'Gregg' Lynx?

Pierre Olivier runs the "surviving panzers" website, which consists of PDF's listing all sorts of WW2 armour vehicles around the world. There is also a PDF on the Dingo and Lynx...maybe not all info is up-to-date or complete, but at least it gives you an idea of surviving vehicles.

It's a long shot, but Peter Ford was down visiting with Bill Gregg when the Lynx arrived in Rockwood and he took a LOT of photos of them. Some went to Bart Vanderveen who ran some in an issue of Wheels and Tracks about the vehicles coming back to Canada.

So there should be photos out there somewhere nicely documenting what they all looked like upon arrival, including wartime Canadian Army markings and later Greek Army markings.
