Chris, this picture looks like the lid goes to that red highlite. What are your thoughts on this?

Yep! I may have moved (Never Again!), but the email address is the same.

They're not worth anything IMAO, so postage costs only.

Chris.

No, the lid covers the entire box (based on somene having a WS18 Static Battery Box with the lid from a WS11 240 volt battery box fitted to it, I suspect the red mark may be to indicate the positive socket (although the plug apparently had different-sized pins to avoid misconnection).

Chris.

cletrac (RIP) 30-12-18 01:56

So the lid is just about 1/4" thick?
I put the red highlite on the picture.

I found these pics on an old MLU thread. It's a WS18 static battery with a cover off an 11 set HT battery.

The 11 set cover fits the 18 set case so just the internals and the connector are different. The last pic is a plug I have but the prongs aren't there. I'll have to make some.
It uses finger joints in the corner joins so I'll have to find someone who has the tools to make some.
Mike, I came up with way more than even I expected!

Ron Pier 30-12-18 07:21

Very kind Chris! Emails sent.

Dave those pictures you found are great. I'll take all available measurements and pictures when I receive Chris's boxes. Ron

Don't want to throw a spanner into the works but where are you going to find the 11 set style sockets and or plugs ? Did the wooden box use the large 10 pin arrangement ? Mike

The battery plugs into the set with a 10 pin plug with an on off switch on it and into the batttery with a 2 pin plug. The LT battery has a Niphan plug.

From Mike Kelly in Australia of course! He's never let me down. :D :D Ron

Here's a spare parts box and a remote unit A in the UK.

Tim Bell 02-01-19 12:39

What are correct Headset and Microphone for WS11.

Thanks

Tim

Chris Suslowicz 02-01-19 12:52

Hi Tim,

According to WftW Vol 1, Microphone, Hand, No.3 and Receivers Headgear, C.L.R. Double, Mk.III (or Mk.V for AFV use).

There should be plenty of those available. (I have a small pile of the microphones, and you can use the D.L.R. headsets if required.)

Chris.

Chris has very kindly donated two HT battery boxes. They've obviously been used as oddment drawers and the lids are missing, but I'm looking forward to doing something with them.

The boxes are Bakelite and I'll be looking for suitable Bakelite/plastic/Tufnol sheet to make the lids.

I'll also need the four metal loops for the canvas straps that are bolted on each side with four small nuts and bolts......If anybody has any I'd be happy to hear from you.

So sad that I can't share any of this with Dave anymore!! Ron

Ron,
I too have one of these boxes which again had been used as a storage box but I have acquired an original lid which is marked 'WIRELESS SET No48 BATTERY CASE. E.R.&P.C. 1942 and is broad arrow marked (sorry but my phone camera isn't up to a picture so small!) I intend to use this to complete a UC installation for my No18 wireless set as per the diagram below. My box has one of the strap fittings but I also need another or can supply dimensions for anyone capable of making them. I am also looking for the socket shown in the side of the box from the earlier post and the connecting cable, these I know are very very rare but as I don't intend to make my set operational even broken plugs or sockets would be useful.

Ron Pier 30-03-19 08:00

Hi Mike
Chris is going to look through his scrap bin for anything, but in the meantime if you could send me dimensions or lend me your original, I'll get some made.

Ron

I spent some time today, stripping the paint off, cleaning up the cases and running a 4BA tap down all the brass inserts. Ron

I bought some 5mm black Tufnol (Bakelite lookalike) off ebay and have made one lid so far. A bit awkward marking the holes for drilling and lining up. But a bit of filing here and there with a thin rats tail and all the new 4BA screws line up.
I'll see about getting them engraved to copy this original text. Ron

Mike Gurr 09-04-19 18:47

Ron,
The lettering on the my original lid is raised as part of the moulding rather than engraved, I can't say if other manufacturers may have used engraving. Mind you unless someone has an original to compare who will know!

Ron Pier 09-04-19 19:02

Blimey Mike! I wonder how that was done? Mine will have to be engraved,

Ron

I guess it was formed when the lid was moulded.

I see what you mean Mike. All done in a mold.

I just collected these from my engraver (obviously not wireless related) and presented him with my battery lids to be engraved.

He said he thought they might be to big for his engraving platform. But I told him to "Knock it off with those negative waves and stop crying or I'll give him a slap"......We'll see! Ron

Whilst the lids are away and my mate John is making a press tool to make the plates for the canvas carrying strap 'D' rings. I've made some 'D' rings from a heavy gauge wire coat hanger that's been knocking around the workshop for years, and the spreader plates for inside the boxes.

I've also been making the holding frames for the batteries......Based on the few available pictures that I have. I couldn't quite finish the job today as I've run out of 5/16" round bar for the uprights. Ron

Thanks Mike. These boxes will only be for visual effect, so as long as the outside looks right, I'm more than happy.

They have the external part of the sockets intact which is a nice bonus.Although I've no idea what the four holes are around the sockets are for? Both boxes are the same. They also have the two holes at the back which can be filled with a 2BA countersunk screw.

If anyone has anything like, similar looking plugs as in the second picture going spare? Please let me know. Ron

My friend John made a press tool come drill jig and formed some 'D' ring clamps from the correct gauge brass (one extra for Mike)

Here is the finished result with engraved lids and painted holding frames.
Ready to install behind my WS11 where they will barely be seen :whinge Ron

Mike K 26-04-19 00:21

Well done

Lovely work Ron. Another piece of the puzzle done. And we can see the box behind the 11 set in your truck.... its not hidden .

Ron Pier 26-04-19 08:28

Thanks Mike. I know from when I acquired the set, you told me it was a working example and I'm more than happy with that, but I've never had any intention of trying to use it.

I love to collect all the correct equipment to compliment my vehicles but wireless operation is a whole other hobby that I've never got into. :thup2:

Cheers Ron
