Can't tell where it's at answer wise, but here's mine:

"Do up that button man, where do you think you are?"

Not chickened out Old Boy, merely thinking of "bon riposte"...

How's this grab ya...?

1. "What manner of dress is this, son?"

"Harith, Father."

First hint..."He likes your lemonade"
Second hint..."There is no gold in Aqaba"

What a giveaway!

2. "Pot that fellow, there's a good man"

Hint: "Hookie, that's a flogging offense".

3. A bit convoluted but that goes with the literary territory:

"From now on, I don't want anyone to come in to see me while I'm here. Is that clear?"
"Yes".
"Will that be all?".
"Yes".
"What shall I say to the people who do come to see you while you're here?"
"Tell them I'm in and ask them to wait".
"Yes, sir. For how long?"
"Until I've left."
"And then what shall I do with them?"
"I don't care".
"May I send them in to see you after you've left?"
"Yes".
"But you won't be here then, will you?"
"No".

OK, JD, racking my brains, no reference material...I'm thinking "A Bridge Too Far", towards the end...

Could be dead wrong, but the bell's are ringing in my head about the reference you've posted.

I'll sleep on it.

Well, perhaps the first ever LRDG member on a Brough Superior, John Hume Ross in the RAF and then Thomas Edward Shaw in the Tank Corps.

Possibly from the work set in Africa starring Maurice J. Micklewhite.

Which movie?

Originally black and white. Later a colour version.

- So they call me "Concentration Camp Erhardt"?
- We do the concentration and the Poles do the camping?

And another one (singing):

- Gonna crush Poland, then I´ll take over France,
I´ll cross that English channel and kick them in their pants.

Greetings from a still sunny Stockholm.

Stellan

P.S. I don´t recall the exact lines but it was somewhat like this:

- I höpe zhat you will cööperate - otherwize I have to hand you över to zhe SS and you vill maybee tortured.

Could it be "The Hill" (with Sean Connery) if that is the English title.

Naw, V_D got it, THE WAY AHEAD (1944, David Niven, Stanley Holloway et al, excellent propaganda film!).

OK, Glowworm...you being a veritable font and cornicopia of knowledge, what was the plate number of the last Brough Superior ridden by Shaw/Ross/Lawrence?

Hint...it's not the same as the one in the movie.

BTW, Micklewhite doesn't raise as much Caine as he used to.:)

Related and equally interesting: when I was in Wales in 2001 with Mrs WB, we went to the museum for the 24th Regiment of Foot at Brecon. Fascinating place, with artifacts from Rorke's Drift you can actually touch! The museum curator told me they won't sell the ZULU movie in the museum because of the way it portrays Hook; instead they sell ZULU DAWN.

Yes, re-reading that post I saw it now. But there were so much propagation QRM in the message.

Used to be used with that when I was in the R Sw Sigs - but that is 40 years ago (I am good at all things people never asks for nowadays - for example stoking a steamship).

But this movie quiz is fun! Thanks!

Interesting point..."Zulu Dawn", produced after "Zulu", but historically occurring just prior to "Zulu" was somewhat influenced in its production by the untimely death of Stanley Baker.

The "Zulu Dawn" film was a critical and commercial flop.

"Zulu" took considerable liberties with historical fact (including Henry Hook's incorrect image)...i.e. both Baker and Caine wear uniforms from the turn of the century and the troops wear Slade-Wallace pouches rather than the authentic 1871 Valise Pattern.

Also, incorrectly, the 24th of Foot was called "The South Wales Borderers"...this re-naming didn't occur until 1881, two years after the Zulu War, when the regiment was properly known as the "The Warwickshires".

Wow!...Sorry about that...I've really digressed...but this era is one of my study periods...18 books in my library about these events in 1879.

Stellan, we have at least three sigs people here anyway who can communicate quite effectively in morse... can you, still? If so, I'm putting out a call for one of you to start a thread here which shall be nothing but code - no grammatical English. A hell of a challenge for the rest of us! I dare you... :D

I believe that quote is also from ZULU when the Colour Sergeant is addressing a man on the Firing Line.

An easy one:

"It takes an Irishman to play the pipes!"

Title (of course), name of principal, object of comment and significance, please.

A little more obscure:

"Home is the sailor, home from the sea..."

Betcha won't get this one, but I have the movie in VHS, so I'm one-up onya... :D
