Hi Mike
cheers I have seen these, regs Rupert Larke hoskins sold ex army Austin Ambulance chassis they bought up most of the ones in NSW, regs rupert |

I reckon that some of the official British auto dealerships such as Lanes Motors , Larke Hoskins and others would have been reluctant to admit that they were selling used disposals vehicles but I guess it was a not to be missed opportunity for a quick profit while they were waiting for the new post-war stocks to arrive from the U.K. They did not widely advertise the used military stuff , instead, they were big on ads like 'order your new post war blah blah' |

Hi Mike
Maybe not that reluctant,as this add suggest's. regs Rupert |

Took me a while to find the "AMBULANCE CHASSIS" it is not a stand-out obvious section of the advert. Overall, that advert is clearly aimed at pushing the new post-war range. And what is a Electricar ? Did they remove the ambulance bodywork and sell them as open cab/chassis for conversion to a flat tray ? The Austin A40 seen in the advert was released in 1947, I am surprised they still had any ambulance chassis available at that point in time. Going through AWM126 they purchased a few K2/Y but only in very small numbers. I wonder if the Austin agencies in states other than NSW purchased any K2Y ? Some interesting early Austin stuff http://www.austinmemories.com/styled/index.html http://www.austinmemories.com/styled...-54/index.html http://www.austinmemories.com/styled-21/index.html |

Hi Mike
the Ambulances were sold off by the Army c1948, So they would be fairly "new" stock, As for removing the body the add would surges this, pictured (farly certain)an ex 2AACC Ambulance, WD no. A1205131, AMF no. 76142, 50236, this would have displayed both the WD number, and AMF no. (above) on the bonnet sides. Sold by Larke Hoskins. I am still trying to track this one down. Larke Hoskins purchased most in NSW, as about only 70 came to Australia, Being split with Queensland, one or two going to Victoria and South Australia, there is a film FO1986 of the ones in Queensland. also a film wich I cannot find of one in Darwin around the time of the bombing. |
Ok

The 2 pounder Morris Portees were sold off in early/mid 1945 , the red ink dates of sale are to be seen in AWM126, just above the Morris sales is the list of Austin K2/Y sales to Larke Hoskins. My Morris PU 8cwt was civilian registered in July 1945, I have its original Victorian reg. certificate. I have no knowledge of its previous military service or when or how this Morris arrived in Australia. |

Sorry about the thread hijack Thanks for your offer of assistance. The reg. certificate shows the chassis nr. The grey colour was applied by Lanes Motors, the Morris dealership in Melbourne. There is a faded unit sign with 3 digits. The AWM126 is not a complete list of all the army vehicles, it is a great resource but for various reasons unknown to me there are vehicles missing that should have been included. Looking through the unit war diaries I have found a small number of Morris 8 cwt trucks on issue to certain units in the Middle East but of course , no chassis or engine numbers are given. The first Morris PU I recovered does have a bonnet number 0 36?0. AWM pics do indicate this five digit numbering sequence was used on many of the British W.D. type vehicles (including M/cycles) that were issued/loaned to the AIF units that were stationed in Palestine. |
Hi Mike
I had a look I have nothing for these, but I found Morris's C8,with the 1st Australian Div , cheers for the pictures regs rupert |
