Eric, you being from Thunder Bay do you know Don Barrie ? he is a collector of carriers and a great chap, he was kind enough to sort me out with my carrier :) (sorry to go off on a tangent guys)

RichardT10829 31-08-09 22:26

Rick i fitted the templates on the sides and they appear spot on i took some pics however my pc is dead so i have had to resort to using my mobile phone to access the web ! I have a query on the gunners side where the armour drops (where it meets the front cockpit) it lines up spot on with the center bulkhead plate can you check this on your carriers ?

RichardT10829 03-09-09 12:36

Replied to your email Rick, thanks for getting back to me. It appears that the patterns are spot on, if you send me the others i will cut them out as per the sides and get them fitted. if you manage to get the center bulkhead measured i would be interested in this too as this is the major bit i need. i am going to salvage my glacis plate.

cheers

Richie

Plate is flush to front

3 Attachment(s)
The side armor stops flush with driver side of plate #; CTL 13284 (Plate - division – corner) as you can see in the photos. I’ve included my updated side armor drawings as well. I believe the drawings to be fairly accurate however I leave them open to the forums critique. I’m working on the bulkhead drawings I will provide them when complete.

I’ve been provided with the cost of side armor cutting, the quote is $105.00 CND funds per side. Steel will be an extra cost. Does the amount sound reasonable (this will include rivet holes)? How does this compare with other suppliers?

RichardT10829 04-09-09 12:08

Rick you listed the armour thickness as 10mm can you tripple check this as my carrier remnants are thinner stuff. the front armour is 10mm though.

just measured the bits with a Micrometer and:-

Glacis plate is 5mm

Front armour is 10mm

center bulkhead (main section) is 5mm

Side and rear armour is 7mm

this is on a 1942 canadian Mk1 that i have.

Lynn Eades 04-09-09 12:19

Richard

The thickness of the armour varies. I have front armour from a Canadian Mk1, and front armour from a British mk1. Both are different. The mcDell boys had some plates cut out with a veiw to using the original steering box fabrication. It didnt work and they had to go for the thinner plate. (same as original)
I think I have reported this correctly. If your following this Greg or Chris, come in and explain.

RichardT10829 20-09-09 16:57

Rick, how did you get on, is there anything else you need from me ?

RichardT10829 02-10-09 15:41

i have DXF'd the side armour and the center bulkhead plate (i am awaiting final details from Rick to see if any measurements need corrected on the center plate) once done i can get them onto discs etc for folk, just need the front armour, rear armour, and tool plate then that should be the lot !

Any news on the CAD patterns?

RichardT10829 20-12-09 18:54

side amour and rear armour completed, i have drawn patterns for front armour, Rick is has done the center bulkhead which needs tweaking slightly, so we are getting there slowly but surely.

JTH 22-12-09 00:14

Thanks Richard!

Slowly but surely describes my carrier project as well (I have been sidetracked by an M-152 radio van that was looking for a home)!

Side Armor Order

Finally…we’re starting the laser cutting of a few plates, and covers for the carriers! All the measurements were taken off a Mk 1 carrier…perhaps anyone who might know what parts are interchangeable with a Mk2 could comment.

The laser cutter company is ready to cut both sides (CTL 12774 D Plate - protection - L.H. & CTL 12775 D Plate - protection - R.H.) and is waiting for quantity. The cost per side is 220.00 CND funds for pick up in Edmonton or Three Hills Alberta, Canada. The plates will be cut to dimension and have rivet holes cut out. If you’re interested you can PM me or email to stuff4rick@gmail.com.

I have provided the below original parts to the laser cutting company, they are confirming measurements will then format part drawings and I expect quotes shortly, so assess your needs and I will provide costs as they come in.

ENGINE VENTILATOR
CTL 7252 Plate - engine ventilator deflector
CTL 12770 L Plate - engine ventilator - rear L.H.
CTL 12771 L Plate - engine ventilator - top L.H.

Cad Drawings

Is there anyone who will send me the cad drawings, as freight costs for the finished product to here would be horrendous. I need to do all the front armour. Thanks.

RichardT10829 15-09-10 10:15

i have center bulkhead and sides CAD'd i am still trying to do the front plates... Lynn i can email you the DXF's and can post you copies of 1:1 drawings of the front armour if this is of any help to you ?

Lynn Eades 15-09-10 10:26

Richard

Sounds good to me. Whats next?

RichardT10829 15-09-10 10:44

Email adress matey. If you email Rick he may give you the front DXF's alternate i will get another card tube and start plotting......takes me ages to draft them out though..i need to do a set for one of the lads here to CAD up. Mind folks looking at Ricks prices if you are on the same peice of rock / country as him that is a pretty good price ;)

also Rick i would not cut the lower edge holes... most folk still have these frame rails on their carriers, cut the others but not the bottom edge...its better to offer the plate up and drill them, that way any discrepancies between machines wont throw the holes out of kilter......so to speak.

great work though buddy well done

Lynn / Richard,

I don’t have access to the DXF files, at some point drawings could be made available…will post here if that can happen.

On the bottom rivet holes; the plate dimensions and hole placement was taken from both a Mk1 side plate and from a carrier with the plate removed but the angle iron / holes still in place…so I don’t see why the bottom holes wouldn’t be accurate as well as preferred. They should line up with your original angle iron or will be an accurate template if angle iron is missing.

Armour cad drawings

Just a thought .Maybe the one's that don't want the holes in the bottom could ask for them to be made that way . I put these original plates up beside my MK1 and MK2 carriers and they lined up pretty good . If you want Mk2 plates the inside corner is square and other than some different holes for mounting things on different modles I could see no difference in Mk1 & MK2 .Put me down for two left and two right side plates Rick George

Hans Mulder 30-03-11 23:45

I need a complete set of armour for my carrier, front, sides, rear, and engine cover. Rick, can your supplier make all of this now? And what is the ballpark costs for steel and cutting?

Thanks to the members who have offered to send drawings. As my funds are limited (my wife has stipulated that renovations are priority) I will likely have a friend produce one piece at a time locally, unless it works out better cost wise to make the drive to Alberta for a complete set.

Rick DeBruyn 04-04-11 03:02

Hi Hans, Welcome to the fun! There are about 5 active carrier projects in Alberta that are cooperating on some reproduction parts. I’m sure we can be helpful on supplying some items. I have sent you a PM give me a call when you have a chance. Best, Rick

Dave Schindel 04-04-11 05:49

Rick,I'm also in need of all the armor for my MKII. The top half of the bulkhead divider is gone as well. Please keep me informed as to your progress. If there are enough maybe it will help with the price, although steel has gone up lately.
Dave

Jon Bradshaw 04-05-13 06:18

Hello

I have moved to Edmonton now and am in need of some armor for a MKII.

Wondering if there is still a way to get some, seeing that the thread is older?

I sent a PM. Anyone else out there know how the first run went and if it is still available?

Jonathan

Paul Schipper 09-05-13 01:26

I see that this is all old news but if possible I need a full set of upper everything.... please advise...

Hans Mulder 15-05-13 18:45

Does anyone have the measurements/dimensions for all the pieces of the front armour?

Hans Mulder 03-09-13 20:32

Now I'm just looking for drawings/dimensions for the vision slot covers and the steering gear covers. Anyone able to help me out?

jeff davis 04-09-13 04:05

Shutters

Are you looking for the vision shutter dimensions if so I can send you a drawing via snail mail
