I knew I had seen this photo before, I've found the clearer shot, and sure enough, '69' is chalked on the armoured plate (see attached). Unfortunately, the reference given is for the IWM.

I know you can't use these (there from the IWM), but I posted them because they are clearer than the one of the demo by a soldier of 4 Cdn Armd Div, that I posted earlier. The pictures themselves were taken in England - Apr/May 44.

I suspected THE VICKERS MACHINE GUN: TRANSPORTING THE GUN - UNIVERSAL CARRIER would have information. However it seems it still needs to be uploaded - possibly contacting the site owner might speed things up?

Good info on how the Vickers was carried in the 15-cwt truck, though.

I know you can't use these, but I thought you may want to see them. The top photo is from the same demo for troops of the 3rd (Br) Inf Div. prior to D-Day. Both photos are from a book I have that was published shortly after the war.

No, this picture is not from the same sequence of photos. The troops being carried in the Priest Kangaroos in this instance are the 7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 154th (Highland) Infantry Brigade, 51st (Highland) Infantry Division. The chalked Tac Sign on the armoured plate reads HD 69 (attached top photo) and the 7th Argyll's Tac Sign/Route Marker appears in the lower right hand corner of the photo (attached, bottom photo)

Both photos of Priest Kangaroos are from the troops forming up for Operation TOTALIZE, (7-10 Aug 44). 51st (H) Inf Div attacked on the left and 2nd Cdn Inf Div attacked on the right. (see attched map). The reason why there is photos of Priest Kangaroos with both chalked "69" and "HD 69", is because, this is the way that they were marked to: 1) so the infantryman using them would know which vehicles were assigned to their battalion and 2) because both 2nd Cdn Inf Div and 51st (H) Inf Div, where using battalions from their junior infantry brigades in the same attack (both the S.S.R. and 7th A&SH both had the same AoS markings, white 69 on a brown backing), the Kangaroos transporting the S.S.R. were chalked "69" to denote the S.S.R. of 6th Inf Bde, 2nd Cdn Inf Div and the ones transporting the 7th A&SH were chalked "HD 69" to denote the 7th Argyll's of 154th (H) Inf Bde, 51st (H) Inf Div., these markings also aided in movement control for them moving into the FUP. I've attached photos of the two Kangaroos in question, below the map, more or less in line with their access of advance in the attack. Hope this clears up your questions concerning "69" and "HD 69".

John; the Tac sign/Route marker HD 49 (example below) is that of the 274th Field Company, Royal Engineers, 51st (Highland) Infantry Division. The 'empty' Priest Kangaroos appear to be travelling 'down' the 'SINATRA' route

Note that the Ford Lynx has both its Canadian Census Number AND its original CMD assembly number! Wow! Wonder where it was assembled in the UK?

The Staghound T17E1 is from the British Demand S/M 1212 assembled late 1943, F 225284 to 225783.

NAC photo (PA 114754) of a Terrapin with some Buffalos during the battle of the Scheldt on the 13th of October, 1944 (posted by J.McGillivray at the Missing Links Forum).

As far as I know, these were not in use by the Canadians, though.
