Five Carrier meet at War and Peace 2013.

We managed to get five carriers in the arena this year at the same time. Good day. Good fun.

kevin.

Ben 22-07-13 08:22

Excellent.

Kevin,Marc,Nigel, Ron & Barry ?

After this years W&P I'm determined to get one there for next year. Rivets to be done next week, painting a week later then it can all start going back together.

If Richard gets his finger out with me and Rick and Shaun bring theirs can we aim for double figures?

Ben

RichardT10829 22-07-13 16:28

I am onto the engine now.. My problem is that to ship my carrier down there is not a cheap affair... Guess I better get saving now ! Would be cool if they were all the same scheme and we could have a carrier platoon on parade. Alas bar Shaun and myself, I don't think many folk have an interest in the Sicily campaign :-)

Ganmain Tony 22-07-13 19:32

warm

Warmer in fact - pretty hard to believe I know :)

Hanno Spoelstra 23-07-13 08:40

Got home from "Beltring at Sea" last night, missed some of the people I wanted to meet, but unexpectedly ran into others. It was great fun! More later...

Was It You?....War And Peace 2013

Hi All ...just wanted to say thanks to the guy who let me sit in and look over his carrier at the show. I was with my brother ( twin ) Martin and you did tell me your name but I have that ailment the makes you forget names ... so if it was you many thanks indeed ! A carrier is still on the wish/bucket list ! Andy B

shaun 24-07-13 20:50

My father stopped at Nymajagn. ( Excuse spelling) in his carrier in 1944.

For everyone

I intend to put quite a few pictures on. If everyone is interested.

I'm sure the blokes on this forum who are a long way away from War and Peace will be interested in these photos...

Have spent a ridiculous amount of time today trying to download pictures of my dodgy phone onto my mates computer and then re-size them. Hopefully they look okay when you open them.

Here's a few...I'll have another go tomorrow.

Mock ups of BF 109, Hurricane and Spitfire around a delightful green shady area for lunch. Traditional sandwiches with scones and a pot of tea with a spot of milk, don't you know...

And if you were nervous that the Hun may make a re-appearance you could always make yourself feel more secure by purchasing one on the many Vickers MG's available at the stalls. (Or Brens or .5"'s or whatever...it was there!!)

NAAFI van was a beauty and so was the lady who was serving very good mugs of tea and bread and butter pudding. "There's a war on! Don't you know?"

Max Hedges 25-07-13 01:58

Tony hope you're only admiring these lovely english ladies

Kathy

Ganmain Tony 25-07-13 11:03

Some more photos from War and Peace

Chevy 15 cwt - very nice little truck in RAF colours. Has a diesel engine in it.

Not the real thing, but they could have fooled me. Hurricane, Spitfire and BF 109

Oh boy! I never thought I would EVER see one of these...

The real thing....Mark IV Panzer...

Got to see what the Zimmerit paste looks like. The tank itself is smaller than I thought it would be.

Would make a very nice addition to anyones collection..

Have you been to Bovington yet Tony. If you like tanks/panzers it's a wonderland.

Dave

That's very nice having your own private bog-box at W&P
Looks a bit like a turdis.... Sorry, meant to say tardis.

Ganmain Tony 25-07-13 15:58

Thanks David

Unfortunately couldnt get to Bovington David, but we did go to Duxford on the recommendation of the other lads. More on that later...

These ones are of James Goslings impressive collection. I had the pleasure of meeting James and his mates and they were very welcoming and very very generous with their time...

My goodness, this is an awfully nice vehicle, don't you know...?

Met Alex Scott, and he and James (the chap on the right in the first picture) took me for a jolly spin in his Humber Super Snipe.

This vehicle has an amazing history and Alex had me in tears (of laughter) at one stage doing his Women's Auxillary Driver impersonation, when he was describing some of ladies who had driven the vehicle during the war.

Many thanks Alex, great to have a beer with you as well. Was a real pleasure meeting both of you.

Ganmain Tony 25-07-13 16:35

How often does anyone get to go for cruise in an Otter??

Thanks to a very generous gesture by James Gosling, I did get such a chance.

The Otter went really well - The GMC engine happily hauling it with no trouble. Went into Hythe, which is situated on the coast for round trip of 10 miles.

Great to meet James mates, Jim and Andy. Fella's I had a ball, cant thank you enough.

And James I have already read the book you gave on the Otter from cover to cover.

Sorry I ddn't get back for another beer Andy, I do hope there is a next time.

David Dunlop 25-07-13 17:12

Tony.

Any idea of the significance of the autograph on the side of the MkIV?

David

James Gosling 25-07-13 19:02

Hi Tony,

It was a pleasure! Keep in touch and next time you come over we will have to arrange something special.

All the best
James, Andy and James!

I don't know David and would have liked to have found out. Unfortunately the owner was nowhere to be found.

This Cheiftain made enough noise to wake the dead when the driver was "up it". I didnt realise it is a two stroke (until i heard it)

The next four photo's might inspire a few fellows thinking of doing something for next years Corowa theme..

Ganmain Tony 26-07-13 10:07

Blitz's/CMP's

4 Attachment(s)
Or if you prefer...CMP's. I found myself getting some very confused looks when I called a CMP a Blitz.

Some knew what I meant but others thought I was referring to the German Opel

Proceeded to throw further confusion into the mix by explaining the differences between a monkey face and a 13 Cab.

Anyway these superb examples belong to Maurice Donckers. Sorry I didnt get to meet you Maurice.

I made several attempts, I must have come to your camp at least 4 times but there was no sign of you and I didnt want to hop the fence as I didnt know if there was a very large Alsatian waiting to turn me into chutney.

Not sure who owned the AEC - but very nice vehicle...

Cromwell

Got to have a look at Rick Wedlock's Cromwell and had the pleasure of meeting Rick as well.

Got to say mate your energy is infectious and this is a bloody magnificent effort on your part.

Thanks for the warm welcome, even when you were very pre-occupied with getting the tank set up and right to go.

Glad we went and had a beer at the tent, we had a great yarn.

Most importantly the meteor/merlin sounded really sweet when she fired up. :thup2: :thup2:

A classic piece of British armour...

RichardT10829 26-07-13 14:20

Shaun, are you going with a living history theme next year, or business as usual ?

Anyone any ideas of a good haulage firm and approximate cost to freight a carrier from Newcastle upon Tyne to W&P ?

Right then, finally time to sit down and post more on here. This year was the first time I took my boys, aged 12 and 10 to W&P. We had a great time, they were amazed more by the weaponry (both real and air-soft) available for sale at the stalls than the vehicles. The vehicles we have in Holland too, the weaponry very, very much less so.

For me the combination of spending most of the day with them, plus the new layout of the site, meant I really had a hard time to find all the people I wanted to meet. Sadly I missed Richard, Tony, Eddy, Shaun, Stefano, etc., but I did meet Maurice, Nigel and his desert bunch including Andrew, James, Peter, Marc, Dirk & Stefan and then some. And by pure coincidence I ran into the son of the former owner of my F15A - that's typical for W&P.
