Congratulations on your recent aquisition. The AN/MPS 501B can trace its roots back to the WW II ZPI unit of the GL III (c). Look forward to paying you a visit in the Spring. What's the condition of the interior ?

Attached are some photos I took of a similar unit which is in the Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa.

Bob It is very likely the same unit. You advised me December 2008 that Andre G. had sold it to a party in Kingston ,but we only established that the party was not the C and E Museum. Your accompanying photo( taken in his barn) showed the same "bulging" side access doors as they appear in Ian John's more recent photo.

Yes it is from Andres. Andre is a great guy. He is one of our biggest supporters at the museum. I don't know where we would be if it wasn't for him. It took some work to get it down here from his farm because of the height of the trailer with the dish on the roof. It was too heavy to remove and reinstall. I have some other photos that I will resize and post. The 1943 water truck was going to be another one of his projects but he decided we could have it. His hand written notes on restoring the truck are invaluble. You couldn't ask for a nicer man.

A little cleaning up and the interior should be good. I didn't spend much time with it as we got it to our storage just before winter and I had to get the water truck and spares moved to my shop. If I remember correctly Andre said it had everything to make it run including spares. When you come this way I'll take you to see it though.

Good day,
There are another couple of excellant and informative threads on the forum, mainly concerning the APF trailer. One was started by Ganmain Tony and the other by Rob Love.
Just search radar trailer.

Cheers Ken

The image title Wksp Tlr NZ 23625 suggests that the former ZPI radar trailer had been converted to some kind of military mobile workshop. The original roof mounted antenna has been removed and a spare tire mounted at the rear. Possibly one of the units sold to the Aussies in 1943 and later found its way to NZ ?

Attached are images from MLU member Servicepub's ( aka Clive Law ) collection showing another conversion. No details available about this one, either. Looks like the kind of trailer you would find on a AA practice firing range or Experimental Weapons Proving Ground. A positive identification would be nice to have.

Cheers Brian

The title Workshop trailer was an error on my part i scanned the pictures and had made an assumption on its actual use

A working bee was held yesterday to get the radar van painted and a few things were added to it. 5 weeks until our event at Corowa and externally it has been restored. We will decide on the internal restoration while we are at Corowa.
