Also contact William Spence (see top of this thread)

Unfortunately, Bill passed away almost 2 years ago. He was a man of class and is missed in our organization.

I was never sure why his passion was so strong for the Burma Buggy, as he took apart a very viable HUP project in order to make it. But I guess each of us has his own quirks of passion, and it could have been something as simple as a photograph on this forum.

Rob,

I did not know and I am sorry to hear that. I now see he was last active on here in October 2009 and have deactivated his account.

Glad to hear he was able to finish his HUP project.

Edited to add a link to a thread dedicated to Bill's "Burma Buggy": http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=30710

Regards,
Hanno

Nigel, good question, actually!

Having had a closer look I think you are right. The curved roof edges seem to be made of curved sheet metal (see survivor), the top must have been open covered by canvas.

Any ideas on this. I believe that it is in India but may be in the Far East. Sorry for the picture quality.

Does the 4th photo show the canvas roof hanging down inside perhaps? You'd also expect some fairly strong straps towards the front of the roof as well.

Over on the aviation forum, Mr. Matt Poole of Maryland, USA, posted the following information:
Quote:

A Chevrolet is seen in the attached photo, taken in either West Bengal or neighboring Orissa, India in the summer of 1945. This is an RAF vehicle, manned by RAF men on their way to recover remains of fourteen airmen killed on 26 July 1945 when two RAF Liberators (EW225 & EW247) of the Air Firing Training Unit (AFTU) at Amarda Road airfield collided in poor weather during low-level formation flight training.

Note the two crosses, one atop the other, strapped to the roof. The names, ranks, and service numbers of the fourteen casualties were inscribed on the crosses, one crew to each cross.

The photo was taken by Kenneth King of No. 138 Repair & Salvage Unit. King was one of the five RAF men who, accompanied by several Indians, recovered and buried remains of the airmen. Attached, also, is a graveside photo of the RAF men, led by RAF S/Ldr Stanley G. Bennett (left, with prayer book), the padre at Amarda Road. King is furthest away on the right. Padre Bennett is also seen in the lorry photo, at left.

Two more pics, these are in use with Dutch troops in Indonesia. They took over vehicles and other equipment from British and Indian Army troops which first occupied Indonesia in 1945 after the Japanese surrender. The Dutch first had to muster troops to take occupation duties over from them, which they did from 1946 onwards.

Wonder what the story is with leopard?

Hi Alan

Wonder what the story is behind the lady and the leopard? This week the was quite a lot of coverage on TV of a leopard climbing on the roof of a safari vehicle in a game preserve in Africa. Wonder if leopards just want/enjoy riding?

Cheers Phil

Maybe it’s a Jaguar Wannabe, Phil.

"Les Bradby's War

These abandoned photo's were found when I was clearing out the late Les Bradby's home at Marsh Lane, Ashton. Other Bradby family photo's can be found on my set Lost Faces of Bristol. This set is all about Les Bradby's war experience, he was in Burma with the airforce, involved in communication and anti-aircraft as far as I know, but if anyone can tell me more then please do. This is my tribute to a man I never knew, but who lived a full and interesting life and should not be forgotten. "

Interesting link Hanno. I had a look around that website and found these pics attached. Even though the trucks are obviously not CMP', to me it looks a lot like the Holmes wrecking gear and rear bodies were sourced from CMP wreckers!
