SRD rum came originally in 5-gallon ceramic jugs marked 'SRD', overstrength and to be cut before issue. It became the currency of both the army ranks and the navy lower decks, and many I know rue the day political correctness binned the rum ration (we can let our men get killed, by by god, we're not going to allow them drink!). :rolleyes

BTW Derek, you'll get the SECOND one I find. The first will accompany me to my grave. :D

Tim Horton was a really good hockey player from way-back-when who started a chain of donut/coffee shops before he killed himself on the highway one night in his sports car. It's become an icon amongst many here (not me) and now serves yuppie sandwiches and stuff like that as well. It's a very healthy corporation now. If you hear the expression "Timmy's", that's what it's referring to.

Quite right Geoff, but it goes a little deeper than that. Canadian's are the world's highest per capita drinkers of coffee and and realizing that, Tim Horton's strategically placed their outlets on feeder roads where most morning traffic funnels in to get on to major roads and highways. Plus teaming up with Petro Canada gas stations and placing mini Tim Horton's in Shell gas stations makes it easy for Canadians to get their morning fix. Add to that the fact that Tim Horton's donuts are the best in the world! (and what goes better with coffee than a donut?) Now, as you mentioned, Tim Horton was an NHL hockey player (even if he did play for the Toronto Make Believes, if memory serves me right) so what better corporate symbol to have in Canada! Voila! one Icon, ready to go!

If you want to rich beyond your wildest dreams,contact WENDY's International(Restaurant chain,USA) who bought TIM HORTON's and get the franchise for all of OZ.
There is one on every corner in Canada and they all make money hand over fist..I have never heard of one closing down for lack of business..

I've never bought gas at Petro Canada either, since our PET Socialist swallowed up BP and Texaco. Same with AirSocialist Canada. Colour me nothing if not holding a grudge against these gummint robbers.

...coffee is crap though!!!! Never liked it. In ALberta they have already been building Wendys/Tims combined stores like crazy.
Wendys is breaking off Tim's in to its own company independant of the parent company, wonder if they are positioning to sell?

There's this new outfit out of Ontario called Quisnos.They just entered Queebec.Saw their ad on TV.Their roast beef subs with au jus gravy have got me salvinating.Any of you Ontaarioaans tried them??Especially the roast beast??Now ,no teasing.Just the facts.One time on my way to see relatives in Scarbourough or Taraanta,we stopped at a rest area somewhere around Kingston.Now at this time Subways was new,so I order their roast beast sub.What a turnoff.Other than the ice still present between the layers of roast beast,the whole thing was cold crap.Never been back since.

...all over Alberta and one even in Yellowknife. I had one , way too much bun not particularly tasty. Yup, Tim's coffee sucks, give me Nabob or Folgers anyday.

I don't find Tim's to be "Yuppy at all". More of a Blue-collar joint for the average Joe. Everyone I go into in the AM has a gang of geriatric types hanging around shootin' the sh*t. I've met many a Vet in a Tim's and they're certainly not Yuppys.

Now, "Starbucks"....................... :rolleyes
