box day 6
4 Attachment(s)
Hi Phil,
Thanks for the hint. Much appreciated. Well another day and a little more progress. I managed to get the top plate finished with the curved piece welded in. Also installed the partition and prepared the internal support piece. That will go in tomorrow and I will try not to change my mind on which piece of the puzzle I will work on. I said I would be doing the wierd angle bits but never got a round too-it. Have to go to Princess Auto for one of those. ;) In any case I believe I am on schedule. Oh by the way for those with the big dump yesterday...it is sunny here in Windsor.....FINALLY. Goenn fer a Timmy's now...may head back to the garage later for a glass of red....and survey tomorrow's work. for now Mike in Windsor Ontario :salute: |
A weeks worth of garage time

Well it is Day 7 and I am just about finished the big stuff. Next will be welding the top on and attaching some mounting plates. Then I will concentrate on the doors. I have primed the inside of the box and will put a couple of coats of paint on before I weld the top on then I will hit it a final time when everything is in place. Got the wierd angle done....did a template first to ensure I didn't have to cut 3 or 4 times before getting it right.
This will be it for a couple of days as I have a couple items on my dance card for the next few days. Cheers for now  Mike in Windsor Bob...all bookings have been made, should I bring my snowshoes or pray for the big thaw? |
Can you snorkel...????
If it starts melting we will all need canoes.....
Nice job on the box..... been following each chapter has it unfolds..... Bob |
snuck into garage for an hour....

I said I was going to be busy the next few days but could not resist doing a little more to the box. I am well on the way to finishing it and have to resist being a little impatient. Top is now welded on. There will be a little cosmetic grinding here and there before I hit the whole thing with paint. I am quite pleased how it is coming together...hope my attempt at the clam shells is as successful. One pic....
cheers  Mike in Windsor Ontario |

I'm curious to know what kind of welder and rod you are using.. A 1/8th 7018 rod would work dandy on that project.. Damned fine place to work on a snowy day in Windsor..Keep up the detailed progress.. |
Type of welder

I am using a Miller 135 mig welder with gas. The settings are 40 for the wire feed and 4 for the voltage. The Miller 135 has a variable voltage setting which allows for more heat control over the a/b/c/d type settings found on less expensive models. I am using .30 wire. I don't own an arc welder and do everything with the mig. cheers for now... Mike Timoshyk in Sunny Windsor :) |
CMP box
Hi Mike
I just took a look at your site and am impressed with your work .If you need more fine measurements em me . I would suggest that if you can get to a foundry with a clamp for a pattern they may be able to make some for you . I wonder what happen to the oridginal molds . If you are going to spotweld ,drill a hole 1/8 th in the out side metal than weld the inside metal till the hole is filled . I am doing the wood in a 1930 Fourdor Ford and will do a manual how I did it .I sure could have used one .It was a 2&1/2 month job . Sunny Alberta George |
The continnnnnuing stoooory of a man and his box

Back again after a couple of days...been busy but managed to get a bit more done on the box.
First off, thanks for the compliment George...I could not have accomplished what I have done so far without your excellent instructions. Koodos to you. Spent quite a bit of time grinding 1/4 inch plate to form bits and pieces. On a humorous note...I was busy bending the funny angles for the end of the box and got distracted just before welding one on. After getting back to the box I fitted the piece I had just cut and bent from the template I had used and much to my confusion there was too much of an overhang on one end...I thought mmmm must of made an error...oh well I will weld it in place and grind the overhang off. Got the piece welded on and went in for supper. It bothered me all through the shrimps and muscles...after dinner I went back out and looked at it one more time....I welded the bugger upside down...:blink: so grind and cut it out...make a new one and put it in the right way....HEY! no overhang, a perfect fit. Any way....here is a pic of my progress so far....tomorrow the lids get made and put on. BTW the wine from La Fiole du Pape and is Chateauneuf-du-Pape  Mike in Sunny Windsor |
Finally.....
... you found a wine bottle just as twisted and bent as your mind.....
You do have good taste......... wait until you have one of my "candlelight suppers" with suitable wine...... Boob |

Two lids to finish tomorrow ...attach the hasp... hit the box with primer and muse over the Clam-shells. Pics will follow tomorrow.... cheers from sunny Windsor...snow is all gone... :) Mike Timoshyk |

I may have lost count :confused, but there is still progress to report. I have added a couple of pics I took this afternoon....I have two more pieces to cut and bend to finish of the box, with the exception of the clamshells. I figure by end of Sunday I will be ready to paint.
Just finished sup so I will do a couple more hours in the garage tonight so I will give another update then. Cheers for now.. Oh ya it started to snow again... Mike Timoshyk in Windsor Ontario |

Well it is Sunday afternoon and I ran out of gas for the welder...When I mentioned it to my wife she questioned....figuratively or litteraly. I said the last....will have to wait till tomorrow for some more.
Could not resist putting it in place to see how it fits....Not bad...based on the feet and the rivets on the frame I suspect that there should be an spacer of some sort of anti-shock material to go between the box and the frame....I knew that old tire would come in handy. for those of you so inclided Happy Easter, Joyous Paque and Frohe Osterne Forgive my spelling. cheers Mike in Windsor....sunny Windsor Ontario |
By Golly it fits.......
.......for a minute there one could almost think that it belongs in that spot....!!!!
Real Nice Job Mike BooB |

Well, I drove the body today and got all the last bits done....I wanted to get it painted but another Jeep nut dropped in and helped me finish off my red stuff.... :drunk:
So...I think I started 3 March....it is now done. I still have the clam shells to form but after sharing some grape with my friend and discussing the next endeavour he came up with some very interesting ideas....will follow up and let you know the outcome. Quite novel actually....something about corn husker drive shaft covers.....tomorrow I will be looking at what he was talking about....oh ya and meeting his father...a Spitfire pilot who was shot down 3 times....looking forward to that. Here are the pics of the outcome of the past 3 weeks work.... cheers  Mike Timoshyk in Windsor Ontario |

find the wine....how about the MLU sticker
oh yes...find the wine....but....did you see the MLU sticker....Sir! how did you know my parents weren't married? LMAO
No hints....but easy to locate. BTW thanks Geoff Mike |
Hello Mike: I hear you need some clams. Albert and I used 10 gauge in the arbor press with a hollow bottom die ( pipe). Top die has a convex radius-form to shape (2 templates X & Y co-ordinates) cut to fit & weld. It is necessary to take the bend out a bit on the end of the channel to gain a little more depth-see pic. Roll the edges cold over a 2 or 3 inch round slug of steel welded to something solid. Let me know if u need the templates. We built 2 of these bolted knockdown carriers. Will send pictures when I figure out how to do it again.

When do you start the production run....???
Hi Walter
Now that you guys have the bugs all sorted out and gained practical experience....... when are you going to start producing the clam shells for retail..... Mike...... yours will be custom to fit your 10:50s I presume..? Nice repro job....... if it was not for the rust pits on the old one they would be hard to tell apart from the real stuff.... Boob |
clamshells production run
Hi Bob,
Actually what I plan on doing is making "a few" pieces from the mold and save them for when someone needs to build a set. I won't do the fine work, I will leave that to who ever needs them. And yes I will be making a custom set for the 10.50s and a set for the 9.00s in preparation for the next owner of the truck...Looking forward to meeting you in Ottawa....all bookings have been made. I have spare time on Sunday 13 Apr....don't fly out till early evening. I can still pack my coveralls...;) Mike Timoshyk in Windsor Ontario |
Hit with Light Stone....

Here it is just hanging around....once this coat dries I will mount it on the truck and then hit it one more time for good measure and to cover the missed spots....next pic will be mounted and waiting for Clamshells....
cheers from (now sunny) Windsor Ontario Mike Timoshyk |
closing shots....it is now mounted....

well this should close off this string for the time being :salute:....all that remains is the Epilog.
That will happen when the clamshells are completed or my arm gives out.... Cheers for now.... Mike Timoshyk in (dark) Windsor Ontario |
Great to see it come together in the pictures. Very nice work, Mike!

Out in the day light

Well I am back at it after a week in Ottawa lernen stuff and meeting some of the ROTTERs. Had a great time and wish to thank the "crew". I rolled the Ford out of the shelter in preparation to turn it around and put it in the garage nose first. This will certainly make it easier to drop the engine and tranny in...as well as start wiring it. Also this will give me some of the tarp area to store the cargo box which if all goes to plan will be here tomorrow...that will be another story.....anyway till tomorrow...by the way Naniamo BC got 20+cm of snow last night and this morning.... :smoker:
Cheers  Mike T from sunny Windsor Ontario  |

And then there is the old discussion, never ending..which part of the chevron on the tire should hit the ground first??..the open end..or the pointed end...or the point on the front and the open end on the back...??? I see yours all have the point hitting the ground first.. Would anyone wish to settle this discussion once and for all..?? ..Nice work.. :remember :support :drunk: |
