A stoker, eh? Fascinating profession, but I wouldn't want to be one of the black gang when the torpedo hits...

[/QUOTE]

Well, well --- first I have to find my old handbook on the Q-code. I was trained in morse in 1963 but becoming a NCO I was naturally (like allways in the Army) never used for that purpose.

Instead I was given a mobile telephone exchange waggon. However in 1965 I was for a month or so back in the radio service but was soon transferred to teletype and ciphers.

In 1967 I was transferred to the Infantry, but still in a sigs job (12th Inf Div HQ) and wearing sigs uniform. My most interesting job in the sigs was 1972-74 with the National Defence Radio Institute (FRA) - then very secret. FRA cooperated with NSA when it came down to hear what they were talking about in the Soviet Union (now declassified).

In 1975 I made my last day in signal service beeing outdated and old fashinoned but it took to 1st July 1977 before I was formally transferred to Infantry.

Stoker: Yea, but only on tugs in Stockholm harbour and on small passenger ferries in the archipelago. I even made greaser.

Now my favourite pub is open!

It is a quotation by Robert Louis Stevenson originally, but I do not think that to be the answer you are thinking of?

What about this one;

"Don't tell them your name,....."

Those not from the UK may not be familiar with it.

Quite so. A very young Sean Connery, even before the Bond series.

He was wailing about the piping of Bill Millin, who piped Lord Lovat's mob ashore on D-Day and hence. His famous pipes are now ensconced for all time in Edinburgh Castle, and furthermore, our own Nigel Watson was photographed with him only a couple of years ago. Somewhere in this electronic box of tricks I have that scan, and will try to find it.

The second quote... I will give you only this hint... it was an expendable American sailor repeating the poem... :D

IIRC you can see the name on the snorkers tin in the film and I do believe one of the cast picks one up and muses over the name, something like Mrs. Somebodies tinned sausages, however, the actual navy rations were:
Palethorpe's pre-cooked sausages.

Oh bugger. Had you been a few hours earlier I could have nipped down to Bovvy

I think "Boa", as TE called it, was GW 2275 and this is reputed to be the bike
of the fatal crash, difficult though as he had seven of them, six SS100's and
one SS80.

Will this do?

You know, Harry; I always wanted to ask you but didn't because I knew you so very much wanted me to; but why do you always carry that umbrella?

John McGillivray 04-10-04 04:16

He could never remember the pass word, but he knew that no German would be carrying an umbrella.

It’s from “A Bridge Too Far”

Very subtle Richard, with the key word missing you can't even Google it! :D

For the benefit of the gathered colonials, ex colonials et al, that august publication from the BBC still known as the Radio Times and first published in 1923, ran a survey within the last two years or so to find the top ranking quote from British TV, the subject one is it.

The film everybody is struggling with is 'They were not Divided' a very fine 1946(I think) film concerning the Welsh Guards 1944 European tour.

Yes, I've been trying for years to unearth a copy of that one, but it's not in production anywhere, and I've never seen it on TV. Supposedly, it's really well done.

R,

I knew you would guess it, but a bit slower than I expected with this one. Now we know how you have been so quick of the mark, you've been Googling, put him in in the back of the class, Geoff :p

The Aussies should know this one as they tell me it has been shown there.

Not my fault, the BT broadband pipe used by Demon has been off for hours over the last two days.

Now really!! Seeing the RT survey response you don't think there's anyone here doesn't know the phrase, surely? We just Googled it to check the off-shore security :D

I know that one! That is one of my Top Ten all time favourites as well. It's Peter Sellers as President Merkin Muffley in "Dr. Strangelove: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb".

Anyone get Gunner's

"War starts at midnight"?

Seems so familiar.

Hints

The movie my quote comes from was made during the war and Churchill tried to supress its production by refusing any technical aid and vehicle sp to the studio... they asked the US army who were glad to help. Thus British troops are roaring all about the English countryside in CCKWs. etc.

Cheers! Mike
