Petr,
As Richie said, they were added to stop the track rolling off the sprockets. If you look at photos of the prototype Loyds they didn't have them.

I've read a 1940 evaluation report by the Army and it mentions how easily the machine shed its track, going on to say that the Loyd company had come up with a quick fix which appeared to have alleviated the problem. Those L shaped supports are I presume, the quick fix put into production!

Although you can't see them in the photo the rear sprockets don't use nuts (although the front sprockets do!) they use a special curved tapped plate, see in the back ground below:
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/962/2...b5086f70_b.jpg

Again I presume this curved back plate was added in the modification to prevent shedding track, perhaps the track horns were catching on the nuts and as the rear sprockets are idlers the track could be lifted up over the sprocket teeth.

That's interesting, thanks! So these L shaped supports are mounted on both axles?

ajmac 22-05-18 17:27

Yes, all sprockets have them.

Lynn Eades 22-05-18 20:47

Any know of them being fitted to a UC?

On all 8 wheels before the end of the year....work commitments dependant.

Andrew Rowe 10-08-18 22:06

Wheele Good!

Not being too much of an "expert'..., but should those wheels be around the other way!. The reason being you have put the castle nuts for the bogie pins to the outside which is correct, but also the grease nipples should be to the outside, and the flats of the spokes should be to the outside?....... or have I got my own Loyd on backwards? , or should I leave this comment until you have all 8 on and then you have heaps more wheels to change over! Cheers Andrew.

Andrew, he’s fitted the wheels to make the challenge of fitting the suspension unit on the loyd that more difficult, otherwise restoring a loyd would be easy and we would all be doing it

Andrew, the British wheel pins are threaded on both ends, the bogie as you see it in the photo is looking at its rear, note the webs on the road wheels. Your flanged wheel pins are going on my rear bogies as I’ve only got four original British ones.

Andrew Rowe 11-08-18 09:56

Double Ended !

You were just trying to trick me!. I new you were up to no good! If you had wanted pins with thread each end , you should have said, Cheers.

kevin powles 11-08-18 13:09

Those nut both end pins are better as it makes removal easier as you can hammer it either way when stuck !, every days a school day. :-)

Now you tell me :-)
I'll wave to you across the sea from QLD again on Monday, should be landing Sunday evening in Brisbane.

Lynn Eades 11-08-18 21:41

Al, Andrew has a crook shoulder so he won't be able to throw any over.

ajmac 17-04-20 22:16

Things have progressed at a regular slow pace...see video my daughter and I did today.

Excellent work, Alastair! Realy impressive to see what you've made from those wrecks :thup2:

I reccomend watching the video - it is very interesting to see, learns you a lot about how the Loyd Carrier.

Ron Pier 20-04-20 19:37

Excellent video Alistair, you and your camera girl could easily do a telly program! Ron

Lynn Eades 20-04-20 21:39

I enjoyed it as well Alistair. With the body off, we can see the innards of her which we won't be able to do, when she is finished. It will be a shame to bury all your hard work.

Engine in. 24 stud 3.6 litre built in USA.

Lynn Eades 07-05-20 09:07

Alistair, going back to post#65, I see you have the later type seal arrangement.
What did you do about the (outer) felt seal? Did you have circles cut or have you done them with strips?
What are you planning for the generator?

ajmac 08-05-20 09:27

Lynn,
I had new ones cut by a friend who worked at an industrial seal company, I just sent an original, both for the main road wheels and the return rollers. They are complete circles.
I have a couple of dynamos, but I will leave that right until the end as I’d like to save up and fit one of those Alternators made to look like a dynamo.

A little Loyd update on YouTube. Perhaps 2021 will be the year it gets mobile!

As always, first class work !!

Have really loved watching this machine coming back to life, looking forward to seeing it on one of the tours, Normandy, Holland...

You really get to enjoy the fruits of your labour living off the vehicle for a week.

Great work buddy.

ajmac 06-05-22 06:23

I’ve just started a Loyd Carrier instagram page at the behest of my eldest. Loyd should be driving soon.

Finally its virtually complete. First test after setting up the brakes. I need to be a little more assertive with the throttle!

Alex van de Wetering 18-09-23 14:19

Alastair, your engine test video came up as a suggestion in my youtube account.........and it was good to see it running on it's own tracks. Well done!

Have you set yourself a deadline for any of the "80th" events next year?

Lynn Eades 23-09-23 22:06

Hi Alistair. You have come a long way. From little acorns come mighty Oak trees. You are probably the most clued up guy on Loyd Carriers around the world at the moment. From such a minimal start, to this! My respect to you.

ajmac 29-09-23 23:12

Thanks guys, let’s hope in 2024 I can get it out and about to some shows.
