everything will be catalogued photgraphed in situ prior to the tear down, center bulkhead removed, glacis removed basically a bare tub which i will media blast and red oxide prime to seal it. The guy selling it said one side is locked up and the track does not turn, i reckon it may be easier to pull the tracks rather than risk breaking something off trying to crack it free.... but i am open to suggestions. Kevin mentioned removing the drive shaft.

lots of plans for it, but need to know colour schemes etc all the trinkets will be cleaned primed and then pre coated.

I have never seen the track itself break or even the pins from towing, Sometimes you have to give them a little bit of a whack here and there with a hammer to get them started. Heat works on something really stubborn but you have to be very careful as that makes it easy to twist a pin when it's hot. Your problem with one track is most likely rusted brake shoes, (stuck to the drum). Some proper pounding here is usually all it'll take. The steering linkage may have been pulled and the rocker shaft at the wheel mite need to be tapped to release it alittle. Anyway once you get it you'll be as happy as a p---- in s----.

Not sure if any of you noticed or not but the last picture posted has a cover on the steering cam plate.

Ive heard rumours of this but never actualy seen a preserved example. On a wrecked carrier we found bits of canvas and a bunch of lift the dot fastners but that was it.

When you get this carrier please take some pictures of this canvas part and make up some plans.

Ledsel 13-02-09 01:19

Yes Jordan, I had a canvas one on my MKII. I guess the MKI must have been leather. Would be nice to get a copy made off of that one as it looks to be all there.

I have. In my limited carrier experience, I had a Windsor which I recovered from a playground. It had sat for many years and when the guy I sold it to came to collect it, the only way we could load it was to tow it on to his trailer. Despite it rolling ok when I unloaded it a few weeks earlier, several pins broke from twisting as we put in on the trailer.

It was only the pins though as they had rusted in to the links. The track itself was fine.

charlie fitton 13-02-09 14:44

The track question-

Definately tow it around with the tracks ON. Otherwise you will just have a pile of siezed track and nothing to do with it.
Pull the axles first to avoid damage to the innards that are left.
If you don't want the track, don't ship it to the UK, I'll take it off yor hands, someday I'll make a gate guard with one of the last projects. Besides, it will be easier to load in a container.

CMP winter kit heat exchanger...

P.S. What you should do when you get it is tow it around a field or somewhere for a bit, just to loosen up the track somewhat. It makes it a hell of a lot easier to work on and to replace them when they are a bit pliable. This is an Ontario carrier so I have a lot of experience when it comes to anything rusty.

Ledsel..
That canister with the three outlets that can be seen in the photo should have a fourth outlet..It is a heat exchanger for the arctic kit on a CMP .It was installed in the exhaust system just below the floor and hot air was piped up by the fan and blower to the windshield for defrost..a rare item ...
While not a 100% positive it looks familiar..

Hey, that's good to know, That's what I mean when I say don't throw anything out. Even if you don't need it someone else mite.

RichardT10829 14-02-09 10:01

bidding starts at £2000....hehehehe just kidding!

will need to drum up some help once the pickup date is finnaly aranged, to help Rob load it for me.

if flights were not so damned expensive i would do it myself.

that muffler that I siad didn't look like it belonged, dosen't. I found this on a snowmobile site.

RichardT10829 18-02-09 17:41

cool. cheer ledsel

RichardT10829 08-04-09 16:37

well Pickup date is set for 11th May, all ready to go ! Rob got the details off the engine plate (from the photos we just could not make out)

details as follows

Torgis Engineering Co.
Reconditioned motor specifications
date 1534 Job no 0004-106 undersize 030
main size 010 throw size 010

I take it the engine has been introduced at a later date perhaps during a service ? does anyone have any info on this firm etc ?

Cheers

Rich

RichardT10829 14-04-09 14:16

anyone able to offer any advice or info on my engine ?

????

What do you want to Know?
The main bearings, and big end (conrod) bearings are 010 thou. under size, and the bores are 030 thou oversze at the last rebuild.
the mains and big ends can go further to 060 under size, and the bores can go to 080 over size(maybe morewith pistons from the states.
You will have to measure it all up once it is pulled down to see how much wear there is. Best senario is new bearings, and rings, along with all the other stuff that needs doing.

RichardT10829 16-04-09 11:52

Lynn cheers thats all i wanted to know, as long as she can be rebored, i was going to free her up she is stuck with standing, check the bores and if all is well try a bench start and see what the oil preasure is like, if all is ok i will not strip it down. the double edged sword with this is i need to be sure i wont cause any permenant damage to it.....can only make that assessment when its infront of me though :)

Rich

Lynn Eades 17-04-09 13:12

If its stuck.

If you can, tip the motor over so you have one bank of cylinders pointing up. Pour some diesel into each pot, and set it on fire.
Let it burn.
The heat will expand the componentry, and hopefully free things up. It will take a while.
Do the same to the other bank, and then try barring (turning) it over.
This is for when the rings/pistons are stuck. If you have stuck valves, I would deal with them first. If you think the piston pins are stuck, roll the motor over with oil in the sump to saturate them.

RichardT10829 17-04-09 16:16

Cheers Lynn.....yeah I have seen a few tricks, one is pouring AT fluid down the pots, but better still i have seen a Tiger Moth aircraft engine (RR gypsy major) free'd up by pouring boiling oil down the bores which worked a treat. i dont know where to start with the valves as all my other engine building / tuning experience comes from standard heads with valves in :) so glad i retained my DTi gauges / CR gauges / oil preasure gauges etc etc.

re painted the garage floor and sorted all the tools out, cleaned the stainless worktops down ready to go...i am so excited now i cant wait ! i drove one for the firt time a few weeks back and i am totally hooked ! will need to build my arms up a bit, i struggled making hard right turns, could not quite get the breaks to nip the drums, luckily i was shown how to drive it by a real pro, was amazed he could keep her level (no rocking and rolling) whilst moving up the gears, and the carrier was faster than i expected too !

Its a terminal disease. dont waste money on doctors, just roll with it!

RichardT10829 30-04-09 18:47

well 12 days to go WOO HOO !!!! Rob has rebuilt the loose bits and will be putting the engine and cover back on the carrier, he will take some pics of it being loaded up so when i get them i will post them up. he tried for hours to free up the seized brake with a negative result so the tracks have had to come off, at least it will be easier to push around..........Iam on cloud nine :D just got to hope pirates dont knab the ship ! been thinking of colour schemes for ages now i want to keep it as per my grandads regiment in Persia / Italy but i just love the caunter pattern........ Kevin what scheme's you going for on your beasts ?

Rich

RichardT10829 07-05-09 17:15

well Rob sent a few pics for me, more to come..... i keep spotting bits which i thought i would need so its always nice to see extra goodies.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...carrier073.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...carrier074.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...carrier075.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...carrier076.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...carrier077.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...carrier078.jpg

still a load of bits to go back on, Rob could not get the break unstuck so the section of track has been removed as you can see. its nicer to see and know the tonne of silt has been blasted out of the tub so you can get a clearer view of the inner workings so to speak. keep saying to myself "GOD WHAT HAVE I TAKEN ON HERE" but she is not too bad really certainly nothing in comparison to the pair that Martyn is building from scratch.

cheers

Rich

colin jones 07-05-09 23:27

Hi Richard, thats a very good hull to start with and you certainly have lots of important goodies with it. Good luck with your project.
Colin.

Do the Dads come over from the play ground

Hi Richard

Noticed the playground in the back ground in your last couple of pictures. Have the DADs been coming over to see whats up on the restoration while the kids are playing on the jungle jim?

Keep up the good work and take lots of pictures as you go. I'd be lost on my restoration projects if I didn't take lots of pictures.

Cheers Phil

RichardT10829 10-05-09 23:11

ok last couple of snaps before she gets loaded up tomorrow (will get some shots of that process too) cant wait !!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...carrier109.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...carrier112.jpg

Ron Pier 11-05-09 10:49

I would say by looking at the pictures, that the tracks are not to badly seized. they managed to remove some pins and tie the track up. More likely that the brakes have seized on, is why she didn't role? When do you expect delivery?
Ron

RichardT10829 11-05-09 11:12

Not sure Ron, i think Kevin waited two to three weeks for his, so hoping the tanker does not get hijacked or sinks should be home for end may / early june perhaps ? i will break the tracks down into sections, free them up, media blast them then pop a coat of black paint on, then hopefully rebuild them into two lengths which will hopefully be straight and of equal length :)

on the last picures (left hand one rear shot) can anyone tell me what the little bracket type peices are on the rear fender ?

Rich

kevin powles 11-05-09 11:48

Hi Rich, He's done a great job packaging it up, well done to him, neat way to carry the upper lengths of track.

those brackets, one is for cliping in place the starting crane handle, the other is the little thinging for holding the rear tarpaulin in place, they are called footman loops.

cant wait see to your carrier. hope it all goes well.

best regards kevin.

RichardT10829 11-05-09 12:00

cheers Kevin, just need to some armour and a lick of paint :D

malcolm erik bogaert 11-05-09 20:32

Richards carrier

Richard up here in the wastle lands there is a large marine engineering company...J.H.Wood Ltd. very capable and not afraid to tackle any type of job...Im sure they could make a reasonable facsimile of the armour required...at the moment son n0.2 is being schooled not far away from you in Seaton-Delavel so might well be able to pop over for a look-see...regards malcolm

RichardT10829 12-05-09 09:11

sure no problem Mal, i will let you know when she arrives.

Rob sent the final pics last night so it was nice to read my emails when i got in from work.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...carrier123.jpg

so only pics to add will be the delivery, then iam not sure wheather to start a restoration thread or add to this one ;)

Rich

kevin powles 12-05-09 11:51

huuuuray

:)Well don rich, she's on her way, Rob's done a great job for you. get yourself some wooden blocks and four 50t jacks ready to strip her down. When it arrives and you unload it make sure you keep those securing straps, there yours you have paid for them!. I am guessing on two weeks from sailing depending were the boat stops first.

Christmas has come early for you this year. Will she be ready for the 6th June?

Kevin.

RichardT10829 12-05-09 12:35

hahahahaha. nope but if i had armour ready to go, i reckon i could have her done for September no probs all be it the little nik naks would not be there...nevertheless a running road going carrier she would be. mind that would be a pedal to the metal resto, and i would prefer to take it slow and methodical, my aim is to produce a rebuild towards the quality of Horsa's T16, that is my benchmark :)

Rich
