"field mod" means apart from the size which is given by the welding lines there is no exact shaping rules...

"Field mod" normally is a one-off; sorry, I could not find a better term. They were not fitted in the factory like the early square and late round hatches. I suspect these canvas hatches were made as retrofit kits to be fitted by workshops in-theatre. The welding lines are a good start for establishing the size and shape, you will have to find more pictures and work from there as I have never seen any of these hatches on preserved trucks.

This truck is a single discovery tour to me - I love it!!
By the way: do have an idea where to get such parts as cylinder head gaskets from? Just in case one day needed?

The Kingaroy Dodges had a square roof hatch that seemed to share a lot of features with Aust Ford CMP hatches. I don't have a better pic than this, Cliff, do you have a detail shot of the hatch?

Just discovered what could be a D60 (?) with civil type cargo body in "Flying the Hump", Motorbooks. Or it is a civil Dodge, with civil flatbed. The latter is more likely, I think.Picture was taken in WWII in Burma.

Incidentally, I think the Dodge hatches were the same as the ones we see on Ford Cab 12s here. Ford bought the hatches from an outside manufacturer, or OEM.

This looks like the regular late production round roof hatch.
Indeed those Australian hatches were yet another kind of hatch type - doesn't anybody have more information on the canvas-covered square roof hatch once fitted to Erwin's Dodge?

This is a Dodge that showed up at a truck meet last year.

1940 Military VF 401 or 403
 

The chassis number says it's one of the earlier batch of T203 1940 military VF production, obviously not a VF 402 as no winch front.

The cab and chassis is actually surprisingly common, but very few turn up with the original cargo or dump beds.

Not a British contract truck though, as far as I know.

About 1500 did come to the UK, chassis all above 8833896 according to David Hayward. I'm sure there were similar 4 x 2 trucks procured too.

My listing confirms: US Government contract Dodge Model VF-401 to 407 depending on wheelbase, 1 1/2 ton capacity, Dodge Model T-203-B-143, 1940 Model.

The USG numbers were W-313605 to -317173, etc. [I have them quoted] depending on whether Closed Cab and Cargo, Closed Cab with Winch, Closed Cab and Dump Body, or Ambulance. USG Contract # W-398-QM-74171 or-7813.

I am interested to know who manufactured front axle and transfer case?

I've had a look through the VF manual I have here, and the Master Parts List. The front axle (598825) and the transfer case (594066) are both in the listing with no 'vendor' code against them, suggesting it was Chrysler in-house. Same goes for the major sub-assemblies. Front axle joint type was RZEPPA.

In contrast numerous parts are identified as TIM (Timken) or NP (New Process)
