Will there be a roll out or first drive video?

Scott

Yours has to be one the best M151 restorations I've seen.

Hope you have someone standing around with a video camera when you first drive it out of the shop as a completed vehicle ready for the road. The grin on your face should be something.

Cheers Phil

Thanks for all of the comments. This has been a real learning experience for me and there still are hundreds of little tasks left to do. Like everything else, if I could do it all again, there are a few things i'd have done differently, but yes Phil, it was all smiles when I took it around the block today. Everything was working very well. Diffs were quiet, Tranny didn't chirp between shifts, Engine was smooth and peppy. All the time going though the mechanicals was worth it.

Here is a pic of exactly how it sat when I bought it:
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data.../IMG_09161.JPG

Here it is today sitting with my buddy Ryans M38:
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data.../IMG_11332.JPG
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data.../IMG_11343.JPG

Again, its not finished yet. Still need to finish painting the Cam Pattern, add the C/S and some Decals along with a bunch of small tasks. Also need some Windscreen Glass :)

Although it doesn't come close to some of the 151 restos i've seen from the US, my goal was to make this as correctly "Canadian" as possible. I hope I have achieved this.

Well done

Scotty

Your restoration looks great, from one restorer to another, "Well Done", I also like the Me8 in desert colour.

Thanks again for the kind words.

A small teaser as I start to put on the C/S Stencils, Decals and the first portion of the Cam Pattern:

I just crossed Scott driving on base. Nice to see the Mutt running, sounded pretty good as I drove by! :thup2:

Good one, Scott! What is your new tele ext? Ya ain't at 7803 and swbd has you still at 7196. I left msgs, but nada so far.

warren brown 03-06-11 12:41

Just great - the whole restoration is truly inspiring. We don't see many Mutts in Australia and seeing one in its Canadian config is great! Well done!!! As an aside - the M38 - another great looking resto, what theatre for the desert liveried Canadian configuration (can see the maple leaf) is that - guessing Aden or somewhere in the 1950s middle east? Looks great too...

mike mckinley 04-06-11 03:23

two or three more

Scott, my hats off to you, the 151 looks spectacular!! i saw two or three more a2's parked in a yard down this way a few weeks ago. not sure what the deal is on them, but if you feel like going for a drive someday.....

Scott Bentley 23-06-11 23:17

Hey Fellas,

Been off-line for a while. Busy busy month of training.

I have managed to put a few miles on the 151. Its not perfect, and there are a few kinks to work out, but i'm going to just enjoy it this summer.

Got together with Ryan (owner of the 52 M38) and took some pics parked in the middle of my old Troop vehicles. A little bit of old meets new..... Almost makes me wish I went Tan.

Mike, you're tempting me to make a trip down with 151. Even with this more or less finished, I can't help but have a look.

Jon Skagfeld 23-06-11 23:52

Scott: Why do you have a different provincial plate in some pics? Is one of those the "Historic" plate for NB?

Sent an e-mail to you 2 weeks ago...got lost I suppose...I could use that 2299 now, as well as stencils.

Any chance of sending another of the large Red/Black warning decal and another seat belt decal?

When the posties get back of course.

As per my lost e-mail, what's your tel ext? Main swbd still has you at 7196, and I've left a msg at 7803 (even though I know that's not your number any more).

Regards

Jon,

My Regt has been described as currently being 200 pers larger than its infrastructure was designed for (which is considered the worst in the CF), not including planned growth of another 100+ in the next 2 years. I am now currently one of the 200 who are "homeless" within the Regt :) Nevertheless, i've been out of the shop for well over a month now on a pretty busy course.

Funny you noticed the License Plates. The top ones were my old Ontario Plates I used from some very close to home testing before I transferred over to my new NB tags. I'm just running regular NB plates now. Insurance was a whopping $140 per year, and registration about another $90 per year. Vintage Plates are only $15 per year, but NB has some pretty restrictive terms on what your allowed to do with Vintage Plates (Parades, Shows, Test Drives etc only), and i'm the kinda guy who will drive the Jeep to work 5 days in row if the weather cooperates. Despite being a pretty large Military Community, there are only 2 or 3 non-Iltis MVs on the road around here with any regularity and it would only be a matter of time before I got shook down about all the "Test Drives".

Sadly, I don't have anymore decals at this point. I'm still waiting for the Bilingual Seat Belt, Cooling System Warning, and CDN Flag decals. They may be in but I haven't seen my connection in a long time. As far as the other ones though, Rob Teslia at the 31 CER Kit shop (rob31cerkitshop AT rogers DOT com) has both the Square Red/Black as well as the Long Yellow/Black "WARNING: TURN OFF RADIO AND INTERCOM SYSTEMS BEFORE STARTING OR STOPPING ENGINE". He also has some others but I can't remember exactly which ones.

Jon, I think i'll just take this stuff to the UPS Store. I find the prices pretty reasonable and I don't even need to have a box. They usually will wrap it all up for me for a nominal fee. The lazy mans way to ship. Even before the strike, I found my local Canada Post felt more and more like the DMV.

Scott:My, how the provinces differ in their treatment of plating HVs.I pay $118.00 insurance per year with absolutely no restrictions except you must have at least one other validly plated vehicle registered to you, and you don't drive the HV to and from work.

Looking forward to the UPS guy rolling into the driveway.

I'm close enough to Meaford ATC to pick up Range Control on 49.9 on the RT 524A.

OK, although it hasn't gone to UPS, it is in a labelled box now. I really need a personal assistant :)

Well, i'm going to call this thing finished for now.

There are a few things I am going to work on or procure over the coming months:
Semi-Gloss OD Paint on the underside of the Hood,
Ziebart Body Plugs & Decal for Dash,
New Canvas Seat Cushions,
Restore the Radios.

I finally had the four patches of 503-321 Olive Drab painted on. As mentioned before, I knowingly inverted the Greens in the Cam Pattern. This was original paint in a can dated from 1993. Despite a thorough shaking, mixing, use of a quality reducer, and a bit of Flattener added, it still came out looking almost Satin. That being said, the more sun it gets, the more it seems to be flattening out.

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data...m/IMG_2613.JPG

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data...m/IMG_2601.JPG

Added a few more details to the dash etc. Since the Jeep was basically rebuilt, I put in a fresh Speedo, so I put an "Add On" decal on the dash to denote the previous mileage, as well as a "Unit Servicing Recorder" for the dates and mileages for future fluid changes etc:

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data...m/IMG_2619.JPG

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data...m/IMG_2606.JPG

Also discovered a cheap easy way to secure Radios to the Power Trays by drilling a small hole through a clamp and rib on the MT-1029, and then installing a Padlock so clamp cannot be unscrewed:

ever say good bye to an old friend.......

...only to be reunited ?? today i got the chance to hang with Scotty, Bill, and met Jason Meade and Darrell Zinck for the first time. as i was standing in the parking lot at the Oromocto mall and suddenly (imho) the best M151a2 in the country appears (my old friend) . the pictures posted in this thread of the finished product don't do it justice..not by a long shot!! i've seen lots of great looking mv's, but scotty has really outdone himself!!! when i had it forsale there were people trying to buy it to make it into a swamp buggy. i refused to sell it to them because i wanted it to go to a person that would treat it weth the care it deserved....today proves that i was right...and that doesn't happen too often..just ask my wife!!!

It is a little humbling parking next to a fully functioning 1942 Diamond T Wrecker :). I'm glad you came up today, and thanks for the kind words on the project. I know it wasn't easy for you to part with some of your MVs, so it was nice to get you out for a drive in the MUTT now that its all done. It will be enjoying sunny drives and meticulous maintenance for the rest of its days, and the door is always open to you.

A couple years later....

I thought it would be appropriate to update this thread with some pics of a run yesterday with Steve H (spinnerhawken) who has completed getting his former Airborne Regt TOW Launcher M151A2 on the road.

It started out with Steve topping off his front while I waited impatiently:
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data...m/IMG_5614.jpg

Then as we hopped in to take off, what I thought was a flooded engine was a blown Ignition Coil in mine:
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data.../IMG_56152.jpg

No harm, no foul. Some quick diagnostics and we were on our way for a nice cruise of the Ottawa South back country roads:

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data.../IMG_56221.JPG

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data.../IMG_56202.JPG

Not too often are there multiple M151A2 convoys on the road in Canada these days :)

Looking forward to next year!

spinnerhawken 06-10-14 18:00

Ok, so in my defence, I was tired… just kidding.
I can image it didn’t instill confidence in Scotty to pull up to see me laying underneath my rig prior to a long run. It was one of the longer runs that my M151 has been on and it handled it really well. There were some minor issues with it but a great way to close out the session.
… and now I have a bunch of new pictures to get me through the long winter months!

I have to admit your pictures got in my head. My M151A2 is hors de combat waiting for the gas tank to be re-recoated, and that was on my mind as I looked at your shots. But last night I actually had a dream about driving mine without the gas tank! I think I was channelling Gunner Mike's carrier boat gas tank-theme, because in my drowsiness the Jeep's fuel tank was a 500ml water bottle of gasoline with the pickup line poked in the top. :bang:

rob love 09-10-14 04:25

I have a pile of about 20 tanks out in the field where I stripped these jeeps 27 years ago. Shame you are located so far away.

For what it's worth, the boat tank is probably safer than stock tank :)

Plus you can take it with you when you park, defeating any gas thieves.

If Eric gets his going soon we'll be able to give the Iltis guys a run for their money :)

But your boat tanks won't have the emission controls of the original M151A2 tank. It will completely make your charcoal canister useless.
