Hi Keefy - these damn Chevs are everywhere. Took some time out for a field trip today. Have plenty of images but truck was in a tight location so fairly restrictive images. However the important stuff. Firstly frontal.

R106 is a RAAF designation - a C60L. This one possibly had a steel dropside GS body. It was assembled in Melbourne.

The one after it - R107 was the C60X tanker.

The owner of course would like details ex. the data plates.

David_Hayward (RIP) 14-06-07 18:10

Data

It's a pity that the assembly plant letters are not obvious or stamped. The former one sounds like a CKD assembly job, whereas the other two are chassis imported and then assembled.

Keith Webb 14-06-07 21:10

WO 98

Strange - I have WO98 listed as a 8446 chassis for the Fox - imported for the Rhino armoured car project - but it seems that my info may be dodgy.

The definitive WO listing is as elusive as ever!

Contracts and chassis numbers
E52-445 3844363615
E52-448 3844361436

are both new to me and would seem to be fairly late ones for C60Ls with Holden built cabs. The other E52 numbers I have are for Ford chassis.

The truck you've pictured in the barn with the Landy appears to be a Ford F60L going by the cab and spring bumper.

Looks XT to me

Ryan 15-06-07 15:06

XT huh

Restored, they are selling for around $50,000 at the present time. Prices are steadily rising too.

David_Hayward (RIP) 15-06-07 17:16

XTs

We had XTs imported into England by Ford Personal Import-Export Ltd in central London. I am not sure if there any left now as they rusted!

G'day All, The Land Rover appears to be a Series 2, if it's an 88" it will be a Command/Recon car otherwise it's a 109" GS, anyway cheers Dennis :sheep:

Hi Keefy - this one is an ex. Country Fire Service truck near me. They are restoring it as a CFS vehicle. 2WD so either a C15 or whatever. The owner said a number of these were utilised by various CFS brigades and were possibly ex. ambulances.

Model WO1
Serial 2842100230M
Engine SP 3779337 - the first 3 could be an 8 as a crease is across the number.

Bob

Keith Webb 22-03-09 11:03

C15 wo1

Thanks Bob

It originally had a wooden body. The engine number prefix is SR.

Bob Moseley (RIP) 22-03-09 11:18

Wooden Body

Hi Keefy - by "wooden body" I take it you mean a GS body made out of wood. I've informed the restorers that they should lightly sand back the areas where the ARN and Unit Designations should be. In the mean time any information to show its provenance would be appreciated.

Yes, G.S. No1 (Aust). And yes, good idea to get them to do this. Then it can be looked up in the AWM records although this is unlikely to give you any more than the state where it was originally issued and possibly to whom it was disposed of and a date of disposal.

You can see that each plant used their own sequential series, and they do not relate to any other plant's sequence. I think it was Brisbane plant that did not always use 'B' in the serial. The Perth 'P' vehicles were possibly the rarest.

Keith Webb 29-03-09 00:21

Sydney dates

Taking this one as an example, a Sydney built C15 Wireless Signals I have noticed that these had the date stamped on the plate affixed to the engine cover rather than the data plate on the dash.

And as a question, is it your computer which is adding the commas to the engine numbers? They were not stamped that way.

David_Hayward (RIP) 29-03-09 00:41

Commas

Quote:

is it your computer which is adding the commas to the engine numbers?
No, it's me! I have the greatest difficulty in reading six-figure and five-figure numbers. It helps to differentiate the last relevant digits, namely the six-figures. GM of Canada's Walkerville, later from 1935 Windsor, Transmission Plant used a similar numbering system to Flint Motor Plant in 1930, 1929 being a hotch-potch of sequences. After that Flint built so many engines that the sequences differed totally from Walkerville's until 1937 when with the new 216 engines, sequences were re-set again, and then confusion could arise again. Windsor re-set numbers in 1946, by the way.

Try this:
