Brake rod failure.
Many years ago one of our club members had the clevis pull off the end of one of his newly manufactured brake rods. When this happens, your brake pedal goes to the floor and is useless. The only braking you have left is to pull on the other rod with the steering wheel but you need to know which side failed.
I believe the reason for the failure was that metric rod was used which was smaller in diameter than the original and there was insufficient thread depth. David |
probelmatic
Hi Dave,
I'm well aware of the issue and went to a lot of trouble to source imperial rod and to have the clevis CNC from high grade steel. I can see how this could be a trap. |

Brake failure
Yes Mike it was Rod's Carrier and it gives me the creeps every time I think of it.
Immediately prior to taking it to Jells Park I had taken the Carrier to an event at the Corio Shire offices which are on high ground overlooking Corio Bay. The fellow arranging the vehicle display asked me to unload at the end of the forecourt where there was a fairly short, flat, grassed area before the ground fell away steeply to the bay. I must have had a premonition of what was to come as I could see the potential for disaster and unloaded the Carrier parallel to the shore line then spun it 90 degrees and carefully backed it into place. As it was the brakes didn't fail until Rod went to shift it at Jells Park. He was moving the Carrier backwards when the brakes were applied and the pedal went to the floor. We continued rearwards and there was an Italian family picnicking on the ground behind us oblivious to the situation. I was right behind Rod looking over his shoulder and when I saw what was happening the ignition switch was in easy reach so I leaned over and flicked it off. Rod had depressed the clutch pedal but due to an incline we kept rolling back, however, when he let the pedal up we stopped. Looking good Euan. Putting the tracks on gives a whole new perspective. Tracked!

Tracks went on a dream and will need a little adjusting after a few miles.

Start up
1 Attachment(s)
The engine I fitted is a fill in until I finish the new engine, ( means it in to stay for a long while) after many attempts freeing stuck valve and playing with ignition I finaly fitted electronic 6v + earth system and it fired.
Each time I start it now it runs better. In next was the air scoop and engine cover. |
Road test
1 Attachment(s)
With tracks on and engine running and our dead line of Aust day only a day away it was time to see if everything worked. On the first attemp it turned left but not right so back to brake adjustment and refine. After a couple of short drives the brake started to bed in.
|
Excellent workmanship Euan . Well done on that front ! any chance of some walk around photos showing inside as well . I bet when the other workers came back to work after the Aussie day brake and see the Hoon marks on the road, will scratch their heads thinking no rubber what was that . Dale

Aust day
1 Attachment(s)
Aust day came up quick and after a quick road test the carrier was loaded on the tilt tray and delivered into town. After the display we drove the carrier up the road to reload onto the truck. I did draw a little attention of the police who wanted to take selfies. All in all a great first day out.
