That is the Autovac system, it was also used on the Morris Commercial C4 with the 4 cylinder engine. About 40 years ago when I was helping a friend restore a C4, I substituted an electric SU low pressure pump and that worked fine, (the Autovac was not in a usable condition). regards, Richard |

I should add that the later 4 cylinder in the C8GS has an AC mechanical lift pump and can be seen in the recent posts from Jon. regards, Richard |
Autovac
Ah yes the Autovac. The needle / seat in those military updraft Morris carbies can only handle low fuel pressure . The Morris Minor and S1 Land Rover SU pump would be an ideal fitup in a CS8/C4 because of the low 1.5 psi output. BTW the carbies were a special military dustproof design without a acc. pump system.

Happy Christmas!!!!!!
As Richard stated mine has a mechanical lift pump, so this should dictate the required fuel pressure. when I bought the vehicle it had been converted, sort of, to a down draft carb set up, pictured below. I think the carb is off of a Bedford, others will know better but the bore is much smaller than the Morris carb. I have reinstalled an up draft carb but the one thing that I can't work out is how the choke cable and return spring is attached at the carb end. The workshop manual shows a bracket, which of course I don't have, with both attached but where and how does the bracket attach, help!!!! . Have a good one, Jon |
Manual
Hi Jonathan
The 4x2 manual 101/ML3 has a drawing of the choke cable setup. Ill try to scan the drawing but the library is closed til Friday. The original carbies have a code number on them that relates to which model they fit. The 4x4 with the 4 cyl. EH engine carby is S92/164 |
Thanks Mike, that would be fantastic.

Hope this scan is helpful

Many thanks Mike, I did my choke a bit different but in Queensland we don't need a choke. I will take a photo and post tomorrow.
Paul |
Mike thanks for the scan and your time taken to get it, it's just what I needed.
Regards, Jon |
Put my choke here as The cable wasn't long enough to go on the dash, never used it yet.

sorry forgot the picture

having a senior moment :fry:

sorry this is where the clutch goes but I have yet to use it, temp here is warm year rond
|
Photo will not happen, done this a load of times but this one will not upload. I run my choke cable along the flexi air inlet tube going into the carbi, it sits on a bracket bolted to the floor but I never used it as our temp is warm year round,

Thanks for trying Paul, mine had the same modification, I am glad that someone else has picture posting problems too.
I am glad to report that after a frustrating day chasing different problems, the old girl coughed back into life at 7:30pm. She sounds lovely and quite and the oil pressure is perfect. Jon |
Happy New Year Jonathan and yes computers where made at the same time as hammers but we didn't know what hammers were for so we bashed nails into wood with them. Your engine problems will start now, oil leaks are the issue I have with the oil filler tube a pain at the moment. I am thinking of putting a rubber bung in the filler tube as it spews oil out, I am on top of the other leaks but because the tube isn't round the o" ring I have on the filler cap doesn't stop the oil coming out.
All the best Paul |

Is your vehicle a c8, mine has a round filler tube. Having lived with old Land Rovers all my life, I am used to oil leaks but if the traditional methods don't suffice, a thin smear of silicon on either face usually cures the problem.
jon |
Thanks Jonathon yes mine is a round filler cap and tube but it's not perfectly round so the "O" ring doesn't seal properly, I made a flat rubber seal and will see how that goes. Another idea is a rubber bung down the tube with a piece of wire or chain to get it out, won't go down into the engine because of the flap at the bottom.
Paul |
Silly question time Paul, is the oil leaking around the base of the filler tube or from around the filler cap at the top of the tube?
Jonathan |
Hi Jonathon and not a silly question as it was leaking from the bottom but I sealed that and now it's blowing out of the top, the tube set up isn't the best idea as it isn't that good a fit into the engine but I will see how it goes when I give it another run next week. Picking up another Austin Champ Saturday so I have to make room in my workshops for it and the multitude of spares I am getting with it, only bought the champ for the spares.
Paul. |
I have always fancied an Austin Champ but that could lead me down a very dark path.
If the oil is blowing out of the top of the filler tube that is usually caused by pressure in the crank case, which in turn is due to a worn engine, bores, pistons, rings or a combination of all these. Is the breather from the tappet cover to the carb still connected and clear? Jonathan |

I haven't mentioned the state of the cooling system, it was full and I am not exaggerating, of rust and general crap, the steel pipe work looked fine until I tried clean them up and as you can see from the picture the only option was to make new ones. It took hours to clean it all out.
I think I have at last fabricated the last two components, I couldn't really save much of the original parts, only the catch and clasp and the spare wheel bracket. Onwards forwards and backwards, Jon |

The last two components.

Hi Jonathan and I did a compression check due to another issue and all is well, will check the breather but nothing leaking over there as I can see. I had my radiator completely stripped down and cleaned after another issue last year and all is fine now, I have a spare brass filler tube for under the cap of the radiator I made if you need one.

Evening All,
I have been trying to finish all the odds and sods, its supprising how much time it takes, just when you think that you have finished you find something else. One of the items that i can't find pictures of, is the box that fits over the battery, assuming that there should be one. Today it's been minus degrees and snowing, so I have made the number plate mounting plates and painted stars. Tonight I need to make the census number stencil and get that painted on. I could then do with a dry sunny day to get it out and clean up but that's something I can't control. Jon |

I need toe go and buy some more canvas so that I can make the two tilts and the pads that go around the observation ring. Anyone know of any period jacks for sale?
Jon |

I have only given the stars one coat of paint and it could do with another but would they have been that bothered.

Evening All,
Its a bit cold today but sunny so I decided to get the old boy out and do some vacuuming and tidying up as the mess was irritating me somewhat. As it was the first, albeit short drive I expected to find something wrong but it was only when I crushed my hand against the oil filter housing that I found out that the gear stick had been in the correct way to start with, ouch. Other than that all seemed ok, lets hope that it continues so. I think that they make a lovely couple. Jon |
Looks good Jonathon and yes the oil/water leaks will come with usage and as for the gearstick well I have mine the other way and though it doesn't feel right it doesn't hit anything.
