Just reporting in

Morning All (My Time).

Have probably been unable to get in MLU proper 20 times this week on the first try. Often I can get in by just trying again but not always. That I can live with, I guess.

The reason I am writing today is that the site has slowed down considerably again when moving around or when I post something.
Then, I was denied photo uploads about three times in the last two days because "file too large". The photos were quite OK and in one case had just been sent to another Forum that has the same size regulations this one does.

Today at 0300 I could not get on and the error screen was in the German language!! I don't know if that is a tip or not.

No answers unfortunately, just observations.
Bill

Outages

Hi Geoff,

I often experience outages and from checks I've run they primarily appear to be DNS related. I haven't had any success with the tortuga address on the two times I've tried, so when I get in its via orbit.

I've emailed my ISP's helpdesk and asked them to cast an eye from their end and see if they can spot anything I haven't. They haven't responded but I may have to chase them up. If I learn anything that might be useful I'll pass it onto you. :salute:

Regards

Alex

Alex,

Forget the Tortuga address, it's no longer valid.

I'm aware of the goings on right now. Periodically I'm getting tons of "too many connections" SQL errors which portend a brief shutdown after major slowdowns. I don't THINK it's us... I believe there's something else on the server which is getting bombarded and shutting everything down.

Aside from that there seems to be a software issue as well, which I'm not having much luck with at present. I will get that sorted, though, then I'm thinking seriously about changing servers if I can get no satisfaction on this "too many connections" issue.

Some days this is like pulling your own teeth... :ergh: :D

LOL I know... not to mention the withdrawal symptoms which become apparent in several hundred users! :D

Thanks for the extreme amount of work you do to keep this running. :thup2:

We might - might I stress - be out of the woods here.... under direction I made some changes to the primary psp programming for the forum this afternoon, and at the same time pointed the host in a direction he hasn't looked in so far. The result seems to be that for the first time in a long time, I haven't seen any errors now for more than two hours.

Coincidence, or....????

The host hasn't replied to me yet but may well have done something. However, it's closing on 2300 where I am and I'm going to retire shortly; please report any incidences of outage or where you've been arbitrarily logged out as before. The timestamp on your post will give me an approximate lead.

Let's hope this is done!

Thanks,

Geoff

Is it at my end or has MLU been of line a lot recently

Hi All

I suspect the problem may be at my end (local dsl provider is in financial problems) or has MLU been going on and off line a lot lately? Example has it been down for several hours today?

Cheers Phil

Phil,

Not as far as I know. I'm set up to receive error messages whenever the Forum goes down, and I've had none for several days. Having said that, I WAS out for several hours this morning, but Sally was here and she noticed no trouble either, in either email reception or the Forum itself.

Keep me posted, though...

G'day Geoff

Now that i'm a member of this site, i try to access it a lot more often. I don't know if it's a problem at my end or not, but it seems that the only time i can access the site is at night (over here). If i try in the morning or during the day, the page is not to be found, no matter how many times i refresh it.

I wonder if that's a peak time for action on the forums here?

Cheers
Toby

Toby, try http://orbit.dnsrouter.com/~mlu/forums/ for easier access. Something's screwed up with either the MAPLELEAFUP.ORG domain name or the domain server itself at odd times. I'm working to resolve the situation, but it's like herding cats...

DNS Issues

Hi Geoff,

I dropped a shortcut to my hosts file onto my XP desktop and if I had problems where the domain couldn't be resolved, I'd unrem the line I've put in there with the domain and it's IP address and resave it and away I'd go with hardly any problems. About a month ago I just left it in my hosts file I was having so much DNS resolution failures and I've had a great run. Only rem'med it 2-3 days ago and good first day but then next day no dice 'page cannot be displayed blah blah' so I'm back using my hosts file.

In my experience the 'outage' is 98% a DNS issue, not a server or site issue. I learned some more about DNS recently on a job so I'll dig that stuff out and run some checks and PM you anything interesting.

Regards

Alex

Jif..
Now I'm getting this...

Unable to add cookies, header already sent.
File: /home/mlu/public_html/forums/includes/class_postbit.php
Line: 1232

Geoff Winnington-Ball (RIP) 12-10-09 01:39

Alex, The upgrade didn't go and I am awaiting a response from the vBulletin people. I had to restore the original files but something in there was quirky and didn't go... it may well be associated with the hacking a few days ago. I'll complete the upgrade and go from there ASAP, will advise on completion. Jif

Geoff Winnington-Ball (RIP) 12-10-09 01:50

Another thing... try logging off then logging in again after you clear your cache. I'll have this sorted permanently tomorrow morning, if not this evening. BTW, I do note the Quick Reply function seems to be disabled too. Try the straight 'Post Reply' button rather than Quote or Quick Reply. Jif

hrpearce 12-10-09 04:28

When I click on "Quick Links" in the tool bar the page reloads with a different toolbar with "Open Contents Popup" in that position.

Since 0 Dark Thirty this morning the www.mapleleafup.org link has been working like it's old self. Quick as lightning and no slowing down between threads/topics etc.

Happy me!!
