Good point, Geoff. It did work up until a few years ago, and then eBay cranked up their privacy rules. Not sure they have consistent rules in every country though.

Yes all id's are scrambled here. Because of threads like this I think ebay realised they lost out when friends didn't bid against each other.

Jeff started this in 2003 when the full ID was shown.

It looks to me that the 'scrambled' IDs are just the first and last letters of the real ID, reversed, so my ID, GWIM2, shows up as 2***G

Holy crap I was going to say you win the cookie, must work at Betchley Park, but unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case.
Although after looking at a number of previous auctions there is a weakness, my bid ID shows as n***o (1550:devil:{a red star}). This doesn't correspond to my eBay ID of Johnny Canuck Canada, so no cookie; but after looking at a number of past auctions with competitive bids it is always n***o (1550 and a red Star).

So Johnny Canuck Canada aka Geoffrey Truscott appears to be n***o(1550Red Star)
