Tray

Got the tail gate sorted, plus some timber cut for the tray as well........bit slow on it all at the moment - work getting in the road of my project!!!......

Tail gate hooks

1 Attachment(s)
Here is a pic of the hooks on C8AX #891

They have a hinged drop down section that locks them in place.

Other trucks I've seen have a curved pin like the toolbox lockers.

Brush Bar Plan?

2 Attachment(s)
The Hand Throttle mystery is over! Have included two pictures for anyone who needs to know. Works for me.

The only part I am missing now is the radiator protector bar assembly for the Chev. Anyone got a plan for this? I understand the Fords were spring steel but the Chevs flat bar? If this is right I will make one myself, but if spring steel will get a spring shop to knock two up.

Finished the tray.....

4 Attachment(s)
Have finished the tray and got it in shed ready for the 'green dream'. The 4x2 on their tail gate now is only their as a brace. Only all the tray is painted the 4.5x2 can go on then.

Kiwi Box

4 Attachment(s)
Have got the Kiwi Box sitting on the chassis today. Tray was a lot taller than what I thought. Will leave the floorboards until I have finished the wiring. Am going to have to blow another coat of paint on the cab section as it’s a touch darker than the other paint. Ordered five tins mixed all at once to start, so either it goes darker over time or one was a bit ‘different’ maybe? May even leave it, suspose the CKD kits were all mixed and matched when they first left Canada the NZ on the boat.

Thanks Mike, I’m more than happy with the way it has turned out, given I have never tried anything like this before.

Am doing up the brake system on the truck at the moment. Have put a new kit into the master cylinder (which had 1¼” stamped on it but had been resized with a sleeve to 1”, quite new). The front and back brake cylinders are two different models Front has 2 S 231 stamped on it, not original I think, and back Delco 5450072 that are original as per part book. Both are 1 3/8 cups.

The handbrake cable on the passenger side was hooked to nothing. The picture below is of the handbrake assembly for the drivers side.

Anyone have any ideas on where I should be looking for the parts I need for the passenger side handbrake?

Mick

Deck

My tail lights and front indicators arrived and have been mounted. Finished the floor boards in the tray today as well. They look quite ‘polished’ only because I brushed them over with a couple of coats of Linseed oil and Kero mixed 50/50. The shine goes once it dries out a bit.

It Lives!!!!

Still have a few ‘butterflies’ to sort out with it yet, but the truck went on its first ‘field’ trip today. All of 600 yards from home to the show ground. (speedo works)

The pictures you see here today are the results of seven months restoration with no chasing wild women or wild benders at the pub!.........A chap at the show ground, who has several restorations, asked what I am going to do next and have I got the ‘bug’. I had to answerer honestly “the next thing I do up will be a antique wheelbarrow I’m so over it!” :)

Will make the canopy hoops frame and tarp down the track.plus look for a lend lease chev to do, hehe.

Seat Covers in

4 Attachment(s)
Finally got around to putting the seat covers in. The canvas ‘anti squeak’ that runs along the front guards, I used plastic drench hose inside the canvas to lessen the moisture hanging round if they got wet. The original stuff I took off, what was left of it, looked like it had some sort of twisted cord in it and was very rotten.

Was forgetting the turn indicator was on every time I went around a corner so pulled the inspection lamp socket out of the dash and put an indicator light in there. Now I always remember to switch the indicator off.

Did a small movie of the truck at a mate’s place. We are getting some steel and a carton and making the canopy frame this weekend.

Thanks Rupert from Perth!

Picked the spare tyre up this morning and bolted it down. Your a life saver having that 6 stud rim for me as I found heaps of 8 studs. My son carried it from flight to flight Perth to Dubbo and got it here (Qantas staff always thought the worse when he dropped down a box with 22kg of metal in it!)

Got a guy doing the canvas canopy now.

Just a great job - congratulations, really inspirational.

Thanks Warren,

I have so many people to thank for their participation and advice in this project that are members on this site. I have received advice and direction from not only members around Australia, but many part of the world.

I have a new camshaft from America, things from Holland, parts from Belgium, Canada and England. (Learning about the euro)

Will plan on a big thank you to all when my project is finished. Just waiting on the canopy to be fitted and then throw the WW2 camo net over it - then have to do a few last pictures and a ‘big thanks’.

Oh – will sling Geoff a bit for the site as well! I haven’t forgot!

Alice Springs

4 Attachment(s)
Have not been on line for a bit.
Finally got the truck just the way I wanted it and took off to the Alice Springs Truck Show.
Left home and one of the two good looking ‘old’ tyres on the back blew out, so two news ones in Narrabri on day 1 – also – at Moree the 6v pulley broken in two and went into the radiator! The pulley had a hairline crack in it, maybe where some fool in the past had hit it off with a hammer, or fatigue? I hitchhiked back to Coona and pulled a radiator out of one wreck I knew had a good one, and found a new pulley on another wreck beside it.
Got going and didn’t have another problem – well one – till I got home after driving the old truck 5600km up through Queensland into the Northern Territory to Alice Springs, back into South Australia to Broken Hill to home.
Other problem I had was the earth strap not doing its part properly – which it is now.
Left home with 110 litres of fuel in her tanks – 500 litres in drums in the back - $400 dollars worth of tucker – generator – cloths – spares – and most important, 10 cartons of beer.
The parade on the Sunday at Alice was 8 km long having 900 old to new trucks lined up, went for three hours through the outside of town.
You wouldnt believe it but on the day another C8AX got in line behind me!

Was there ever any doubt, its a CHEV, well done.

aj.lec 06-09-10 05:14

Well done Mick :salute:
Looks good and you had a few stories to tell at the end of it all
Hopefully you will be posting a lot more photos of the Alice run :D

Drivers Floor

5 Attachment(s)
Does anyone know

On the drivers side floor where the steering column and brake/clutch peddles go through.........what covered these holes originally.....or....what have people used now? to help with water/wind/noise entry........rubber/canvas/felt?

Rob Beale 08-09-10 09:32

I'd like to know too.

I've seen remnants of canvas boots around the levers on the floor, but I've not seen anything around the pedals on the trucks around here.

I assume it will be the same as Canadian produced vehicles overseas. It certainly needs something to stop the wind whistling up your trouser legs!

Well done taking your truck on such an odyssey Mick. I hope your fuel consumption was lower than the 15cwts! Amazing to see another one too.

Rob

warren brown 08-09-10 14:03

Geez Mick - the C8AX behind you in Alice didn't belong to Fred and Marilyn Reeves did it? Cheers Warren.

Which model truck and which manufacturer because this is something that seems to have changed and evolved. A photo of the floor boards around the peddles would help tell if there is something missing.

I understand from old comments that it was not uncommon for drivers to cut up pieces of carpet they "found" make the holes for the peddles more air tight.

Cheers Phil

Brake/Clutch covers Cab 13 1943

Warren - yes the other C8AX was Freds......I got to talk to him and his son in law while we waited. He found it hard to believe there were two more within 100kms from my home town.

Phil - I will get a few pictures of the cab 13 floor, but from what I take it I have the top section that slid over the steering column but a chap showed me the two pieces that I need to make the slip down from the top of the brake/clutch peddles. He thought when he pulled them from a wrecked cab years ago they clamped down on some old red felt....but was not sure.

I traced the two missing sections down on paper and once made will get some pictures of them and the floor.

Maybe this felt part is what slipped under the three floor sections?. I have the steering column section and the template I have drawn up for the other two bits would fit spot on. Has anyone else found felt around this section before?

The Puddle Jumper is changing hands

Hi Folks,
Well Mick has done a wonderful job on the restoration but has decided to sell the old girl - to me. I feel very lucky to have scored the prize and look forward to using and maintaining such a wonderful vehicle. :thup2:

This is my first Blitz, but not my first collectable or vintage vehicle so rest assured it is coming to a good home. I plan on getter out and about to some displays, shows and swap meets in the not too distant future and have big plans for a major fundraising event for Legacy featuring the Blitz. I'll keep you all posted.

Cheers

Pete Solomon

Change of ownership

Well you beat me to pass the news on here Peter.

Gave it one last wash today, drove around town and gave the locals one more look and wave at the old girl and she's on a tabletop heading to Texas Qld, Monday morning.

Now, anyone got something I should be picking up from them to do up, I'm ready for a 'whole' new challenge.

PM or email me

Mick
