HUM newly made Roof support profiles in place
 

It's been a while , since my last post ( could be a line from an AAA meeting)

And did some reorganizing, finally decided to move my HUM body from one place far from home to a new place 10min from home so that I have more time to work on it under supervision of a expert chassis builder.

Earlier I told you about bending the omega profiles for the roof supports.
In the meantime they have been assembled and now newly placed and they look absolute bang on

Well guys almost a new project on the market, Im recovering from a car crash with a narrow escape.
Now bored at home with whiplash and terrible headackes..

So what to do to keep the project moving, well I decided to refurbish the seats
Nice little project no husle.

Hello all.

The painstaking slow body reconstruction of the HUM
made some good progress today.
I was finally able to fit one of the body panels.

Great work Pieter, it will be better than new when finished!

Thank you for your message.
The HUP is coming on very slowly, Im now working on the body but the shed is too cold to work in.
Due to my accident earlier I lost the whole of 2018 and a great part of 2019 for physical recovery... the HUP was just getting too heavy for lifting parts etc .. and my neck and muscles couldn't handle it.
To not go nuts I spend time in assembly of a GPW , much lighter parts ..but it also helped as a sort of therapy..
The jeep is almost finished..deadline April this year..and then move on with the HUP..I think in 2020 we will place the body on the chassis..cross fingers

Hi everybody,

Again it has been a while but step by step I'm getting there.

I moved the chassis out of storage and last few weeks we rundown all the items that needed to be fixed and all where dealt with.
The Chassis now has breaking power, emergency brake is working and we fitted the oilfilter to the engine brakes and made some oil lines.
The both drive shafts where redone , completely balanced and one got a new tube (super job).

Main progress on the body.
Side panels are added to the frame and we are now working on the roof and specially the hatch opening.

I managed to reproduce the hatch structure and we are now in the progress of adding the hatch frame to the roof.

Great to see all the sheet metal work. Impressive project, hope to see it on the road sometime!

Final stage of mounting the roof
 

Yesterday we entered the final stage of mounting the roof of the C8a

The piece that we mounted is the rear of a C60 Cabin roof cut to fit the C8a
In width we didn't ajust anything it just fits like a glove.

The hardest part of the body is now over and we get into the nitty gritty of grinding and detail work.

All sheet metal is Zinc coated

This weekend was showtime we mounted the Body and Frame after years of seperation.
What seemed to be an easy fix turned out to be a little more tricky than we thought, the handbrake lever was in the way and so was the shifter lever.
We had to dismount the handbrake and tilt the body over the shifter lever..glad we had the right equipment.

The tow to the location of the body was also memorable :)

Congratulations Pieter for mounting the body. Now the fun part of restoration starts , going ahead and seeing the vehicle become whole and complete.

Congratulations on getting the body back on!! It's a big step and all 'uphill' from there.

Going back to the sliding roof hatch in this earlier post, this is where I am now, remaking the tubes and levers. You had asked whether the bronze ends should roll noting the flat worn side. I think they should roll but were probably very quick to rust solid being where they were. Did you ever sort out for sure if they were meant to roll? I can't get mine to move no matter what and will have to drill them out and replace the rivet/axle if so.

Hi Pieter, congrats on the important milestone of the "marriage" of body and chassis.

I love the fact that it was done on the side of the road - just like the RCEME would have done! :thup:

I have an early 1942 HUP that has the rollers with the flat spots. I think the original roller was bronze and quickly stops turning I had a good friend turn me up some brass rollers for replacements. The truck was finished about three years ago and is always in a dry well ventilated building. I just went and checked to see how free the rollers were and I think its a design flaw. There isn't much "leverage" on the roller to make it want to move and they will probably end up with flat spots any way

Thanks Gord. My 'new' uninstalled hatch has three of the four arms and bronze rollers (one had snapped off) and of course were round. The fourth one that I pinched from my original (and well used) HUW hatch had that characteristic flat spot. I think I will grind off the backs, punch out the axle pins and replace, perhaps leaving a little more clearance. Oh, and oiling them daily.

How about using stainless steel for the pins so there is no question of corrosion. It might be possible to find stainless bolts with compatible dimensions.

After 14 years the HUP is found road worthy
 

Dear MLU friends,

I am aware that some of you are not on the FB MLU site, so I am posting this message on here.

There are still some small details to address (where the devil is), but after 14 years, my HUP restoration finally concluded last Friday. I have obtained the Dutch registration and roadworthiness certification.

When I reviewed my documents, I realized that I had purchased my HUP in 2011 without fully knowing what I got myself into.
It is with deep admiration for this forum and the MLU community that I want to express a warm thank you to all of you who have supported me along the way. The list of people that I hope to call friends by now is too long to mention individually, but you all contributed to motivate me to continue the build in good and bad times... and boy, it was tough sometimes.

The MLU community is very much alive, as I noticed again last June in Normandy at the vehicle meet. I thank you all for letting me be a part of it.
