Hi George,
Yes the channels under the box are odd. I believe the box was welded together with another to make a grain carrier. You can see where it was welded together. Someone actually added another piece of channel iron on the original channel forming a box like tube. That is the difference. It certainly reinforced the channel. I will keep this way and put a strip of rubber along between the frame and the channel. I have been busy cutting out rusted out areas of the box. I had a new front window delivered for my house. It was put in my shelter beside my truck. Not thinking about it except to make sure I don't drive into it...I started cutting and grinding away on the box. The weather was good so I decided to move the truck onto the driveway to work in the sunshine. I walked back into the shelter and looked at the window....oh NO!!!! the grinding I was doing was hitting the glass....the window is now pitted from the hot grindings....DAMN!!!!! :bang: oh well...good thing the wife is on vacation...I should be able to get the glass replaced before she gets home... I will have to dip into my Slush fund ..... Chalk up another one for "lessons learned". :teach: George, If you can fix me up with a pic of the rear panel where it attaches to the angle iron that would be great....both at the top and the bottom. cheers for now.... More on "a man and his box"

I am continuing with the "sprucing-up" of the GS box on the F15A....cut, grind, patch, weld, de-grease, de-rust and POR 15. One side is done and I am touching up the other side. The back panel is complete and I have prepared all the angle iron. I finally found a few pics of how they box was constructed on the rear portion. I will finsh the job tomorrow with the exception of a shot of Light Stone 61. All that will be left is the tailgate.
Here are a few pics of the progress....On the left rear corner I will heat up the panel and pry it out enough for cosmetic purposes. It will not be perfect, but will add a little more character to the truck. After all, I do not want it to look like it came off the assembly line. I want it to look used. cheers Mike Timoshyk in Windsor Ontario |
How many boxes can one man make .......

Well, it is time for a quick update...first thanks to Dave Pope for posting pics of the storage boxes for the F and C15A. I am taking advantage of the information and am making four for my F15A.... ever wonder how many boxes are on a 15CWT? Attached are a couple of photos of my progress...they a breeze after building the spare tire carrier. I permanently mounted the cab on the truck and am waiting for the POR 15 gas tank sealer to dry...it recommends 96 hrs. Once they are dry I will hook-up the fuel lines and get rid of my one gal plastic fuel container. I am still on track for 14 Oct licensing and street legal...whoo hooo. All I will need is to attack the spare tire clam shells...I have been procrastinating on them. And of course wait for the canvas work that Stewart Loy is organizing.
cheers for now from Dark Windsor Ontario Mike Timoshyk |

Well, I made a trip to the MTO to register the truck...seems pretty straight forward and should prove to be painless . Provide the bill of sale...make an affidavit to the commisioner of oathes in the MTO office, check the data base to ensure no duplicate number and voila...registered. Oooops forgot the tax man....pay toll and proceed :teach:. I will confirm tomorrow how it really went. Got a quote for Antique auto insurance and $125.00 a year with a maximum 5000 km seems quite reasonable. Sooooo it looks like I will make my deadline of 14 Oct. I spoke with a local garage who safetied my M38 Jeep without signal lights (because it came from the factory that way) and they are looking forward to signing off on my truck. It is always wise to grease the skids with "Timmies and Tim-bits". Sorry OZ it is a Canuck thing. Here are a couple of pics I took today for the insurance people...oh ya...I got an appraisal done as well. Looks like all the ducks are in line sooooo :no4:
Oh sooo close.... cheers from Windsor Ontario Mike Timoshyk |
Having just gone through the steps in getting my Jeep registered you may still be sent out to get some more paperwork. One may be an independant Tax appraisal. It comes on a green sheet and is only for getting tax money. it doesn't even go to the MTO. Any used car dealer should be able to wright out one of these. If you'er planning to have it drivable you will still need a mechanical safety done and looking at the photos you still have some work ahead with ligths. (I do wish my CMP looked the same way though)
From what I remember on turn signals is that any of the historical vehicles over 80" need them. Anything less in width don't. I guess it will depend on where you measure from. There was also something about having reflectors and two brake lights. In my opinion turn signals should be installed on these trucks especially because the driver is one the wrong side compared to modern drivers and they wont be looking for your hand signals there even if they do understand them. Check out the thread on my Jeep, they really made me go back and forth. http://www.class-five.com/~mlu/forum...ad.php?t=11633 |
Registered
Thanks for the info Jordan. Yes I know headlights are manditory and signals are a very good item for these beasties....
As for my experience at the MTO...a breeze...I brought a copy of Gregg's book Fighting Vehicles 1943-1945 as a reference in case they needed any extra info. I was in and out of the office in no less than 15 min with a set of plates and fully registered. Woo HOO! Damn easy. All that is left is to fix up the stuff I need for the safety and voila... cheers from Southern Ontario Mike Timoshyk |

A quick pic of a test run around the block....all the little glitches being sorted out and the wiring runs getting all cleaned up.
My deadline for Tuesday 14 Oct is do-able and I should be good to go. More pics later today... cheers Mike Timoshyk in somewhat foggy Windsor Ontario WOOOHOOO |
Congradulations my friend. It has been really interesting to watch the progress of your rebuild. I have lots of ideas for doing mine when I get to that point.
Now the fun really starts doing all the little minor things to really make the resto job stand out. |
On the road and looking good...

Well I went for my first trip out of the neighbourhood to a Show and Shine at the A&W. It was the last one of the summer. I managed to get a lot done in the last week. I made the 14 Oct deadline. Here are a couple of pics as she looks now. By no means is it complete but she certaily looks the part.
I want to take time to thank all those who contributed know-how, parts, advice and encouragement. From Australia to Europe to the US and way out in the sticks at the Hammond Barn, thank you all. A special thanks to Mark Tonner for helping me out these past few days with the unit and formation signage. To all you MLUers THANKS!!!! Mike Timoshyk in Sunny Windsor.... |

Mike, congrats on the restoration. It is as much a tribute to the men & women who built it originally, as the man who restored it.
Hats off to you, sir! Hanno |
Hi Mike

Plans
Hi Eric,
Yes I have a copy of the plans. I received them from George MacKenzie. They are his doing and gets all the kudos for such comprehensive and easy to understand work. I will photo copy a set for you. I have not started the tailgate yet but do have one available here to get measurements from. I will make a drawing for you. Cheers Mike in Snow-banked Windsor |

Yeah, Mike...I had a colossal brain fart when posting that. Was doing research for a 48th buddy and had 1 Div on my mind. A momentary lapse of two normally co-active nerve sensors, resulting in lack of cognitive reaction.
Am I forgiven? :giveup |

well done mike
truly a fine looking truck! The "F" makes it even better. |
Tailgate work...
1 Attachment(s)
I have been "scratch-building" a tailgate. I fitted it this morning before carrying on with welding the hinge pieces then the bottom and side reinforcement portions. Ran out of mixed gas for the mig and since it is a holiday the "air" store is closed...should be able to finish it off tomorrow and then start "throwing" paint at it.
cheers Mike Timoshyk |
Hi Mike
 One word WoW :thup2: Waiting for the plan :p |
Rifle Butt Holders
Dear Technical Help Line,
I am now pondering my Butt problem...they are non-existent. Can anyone out there give me a set of dimensions????? BTW I need them to be "crackless" LOL Cheers Mike Timoshyk "looking for his arse" |
There were plans for the rifle butt holder in Convoy Magazine, volume 7-1. I don't know if anyone has them available or if that issue is still available from Marc Montgomery. The Convoy plans show a butt socket that is deeper at one end than the other, surviving samples I've seen were the same depth at both ends. I can't tell if this was a change during production for simplicity or a replacement that wasn't built to "official" plan.
CAUTION: I've noticed that the Convoy Magazine drawings have dimension problems. Specifically, the insde dimensions plus the wall thickness stated do not match the outside dimensions given. I don't have data on which dimension is the problem. |

Below are pictures of the holder I have. I've yet to use a router to do a second but that's one of those lesser needed objects!
In any case, the holders are of wood, what type I don't know. The measurements are: Heighth: 1 3/4" Width: 2 7/8" Length: 5 7/8" Inside depths: 1" to 1 7/16" The inside "floor" does slope. Wall thickness: 5/8" Mounting holes are 2 7/8" on center, at least for my F8. They are 1 1/2" on center from each end. Hope this helps! Regards, Jim |
Butt Holders
Hi Jim...thanks for the pics and dimensions....yes when one gets around to doing the blocks it is a good sign that the project is almost complete.....
one again thanks cheers Mike Timoshyk |
Your butt will never fit......
...... those small holders.
Nice job on the truck Mike. Tell us about the tail gate...... did you copy from an old one...?? What gauge..? did you have the sub assemblies bent in a fabrication shop? How expansive was the fabricating shop.....? I am trying to seduce a local shop here to do some small 12 and 14 gauge pieces for me..... set up is about 3 times the price of the steel. did you use mild steel of pickled satin coat...... How bad is your driver's door or is it missing altogether..? Keep trucking...... Boob |
CMP Spare Tire and Tool Box
I made a tail gate for a 2C4 box .I didn't keep the measurements but I could get them . I had a shop break the iron I needed and cut the rest in my shop with a plasma cutter .You have to almost be there when they do the breaking as some times they can get a little sloppy I would do enough in one chunk for all the peices of the same size and cut what I needed at home .George

My end gate George |
End gate....tail gate stuff
Hi Bob and George,
I used 11 guage for the bent/broke pieces. I had a shop do the frame pieces and as George, I had them do just a couple of pieces and I cut them to size myself with a cutting wheel. Cost me $180.00 including material. Ouch...but...when ya gotta have it .... I copied a tailgate I located here in the city. It was attached to a 44 chev. I did make one mistake in the measurements...the tail gate is now 1"" thick as opposed to 3/4". "I should have measured twice and wrote once". I am not pissed about it, in fact one would not even notice it. The hinges I made from 1 1/2 cold rolled steel rod that was bored with a 5/8 hole which were welded to 1/4 flat bar. this was much easier than heating and bending them to form the loop. The skin is 14 guage. So far it has been very easy. I should be finished this afternoon and ready for paint. cheers Mike |
