Well Nick the answer is yes and no. The entire conference was taped but the sound track was botched, from talking with people who have listened to the tapes it is pretty much unintelligible, there are a couple of copies of the tapes out there. Hopefully one will be found that given new technology will be salvageable. I know from having talked to both Bill Gregg and Peter Ford just after the event they were both heart broken that what had been said had not been saved. For now I’m afraid that the only record we have is the ho-so imperfect memory of those who were luck enough to have attended what turned out to be a once in a life time event.

rethink

1 Attachment(s)
Just having a bit of a rethink on the purpose of this bracket

To me given the position of the bracket i find it unlikely that the truck would have fitted with a toolbox or spare tyre carrier as these both protrude further than the edge of the bracket

Would it be possible or likely that these chasssis with this bracket might have been fitted with another body style (not g.s.) possibly anti aircraft or similar ? :confused

So good to see another big X rising from the ashes. You might find a serial number stamped on the chassi rail just infront of the left front wheel, that should give you an idea if she was a RAAF tanker, I think keith W has a bit of that info! Am starting to fix up a spair chev270 for mine at the moment.

aj.lec 20-12-07 09:49

chassis numbers

has anyone got any idea what the body type these two c60x had
-28660m00067
-28660m00110
thanks

Army breakdown trucks

Looks like they might be two of the rare breakdown trucks!! ser numbers 00011 to 00125, the first 11 went raaf and so did most of the rest though I may be wrong? :D there were only about 120 of them!

aj.lec 20-12-07 20:55

How lucky are you? I have a pic of the AWM pages for ARN's 142329 to 142346 which correspond to 28660M00053 to 28660M00070. All of these are recorded as Truck, Breakdown Aust No4.
No..67 is ARN 142323 and has recorded a couple of engine changes.

Tony Smith 21-12-07 05:41

If the numbers remain consecutive, No..110 should be ARN 142386, but I would double check the book before you go stamping and painting it anywhere!

Daniel Treasure 21-12-07 05:51

awm books

G,day Tony, how do you get hold of those records, do they have them on the net as its a bit to far from gero to have a wander over or do they have someone who can look them up for me, I know mine is a raaf tanker ser 8660m68125 but thats it. :sheep:

Keith Webb 21-12-07 07:15

AWM records

It's a matter of either being lucky as in this case or going there and registering yourself as a reader, requesting the volumes and looking it up unfortunately. Both Tony and I (whenever we get a chance) get in there with the camera and go for it! Usually I start with a list of ARNs I want to look up then photograph madly as much as possible around these numbers until my back becomes too sore from holding the camera in the right position. :salute:

aj.lec 21-12-07 07:47

Thanks Tony
That is very good
The way my friend bill goes it may be a fair while before we see this one on the road though
have a safe and merry christmas to all

Good luck for AJ, bad luck for you. The AWM only holds Army Reg records. There have been no records found (So far!) for RAAF reg numbers in the AWM, the National Archives, or RAAF history section. Your number may remain a mystery. :(

How certain are you it's ex RAAF? I noticed in other pics I have that Army ARN's 142221 to 142229 were issued to C60X 68100 to 68108, more Breakdown No4's. I have had a look through some other pics of numbers near this with no luck finding 68125, but that doesn't mean it's not there. Serial numbers and even ARN's weren't always issued in consecutive blocks. It could be anywhere in the system. Of course, it could actually be RAAF!
