cargo box and tail gate

Well Tim,you sure have accomplished some nice work, your truck looks real good, your a real pro with the sheet metal work.

Can I ask where you found the rear directional lights with arrows, I have only seen these once before on a 1941 Ford civilian body military 1.5 ton truck.

Bob Carriere 20-02-09 02:31

Thanks everyone.....

...appreciate your feedback.

Mike..... $180 for the tailgate is not a bad price..... did you ever price a repro Dodge Power wagon tail gate.....???

Keep in mind that I am working on an early 2B1 steel box for the cab 11.

Fortunately I do have a rsuted beat up one to copy. It seesm that all the early models had a lot more parts in the assembly.... whether it is the doors or the tailgate. I will take careful measurements and will post them for anyone else's future need. My old tailgate seems to be all 14 guage but will not more when I do some reverse engineering.

I like Mike's idea for the large hinges.... I will need quite a few as I have the drop sides.

I will mostlikely follow Georges' approach of getting the parts bent and cut my own lenght with the cut off wheel and/or the plasma cutter.

I just hope to be able to develop some kind of "rapport" with the guys at the fabricating shop so I can monitor what they are doing for us.

Will keep you posted.

The 6 Volt tail lights were from an old school bus or truck...they were fender mounted with a red lense on one side and an amber on the other. I painted the amber side and taped off the red side to form the arrow....I thought it looked better that just another set of red lights.

cheers

Mike Timoshy and yes it is %&*&^$%$ snowing again!!!!!

Hi Myke. Try Phil Waterman's website. I believe it has the drawings for part or all of the battery box. By the way, if you are feeling energetic, and would like to make more than one cover, I would be pleased to order one from you...

Mike

gate and truck looks great ! .......... what color and brand of desert tan paint are you using ?

Mike Timoshyk 24-02-09 03:14

Paint

I am using Light Stone 61....this was the color used by the British in North Africa....I get the paint from the original supplier to Ford during the war. The company is still in operation.

cheers

Mike

Two possible model......

Hi Mike

Phil's site as suggested is probably the best source of info and drawings....

There appears to be two style of battery hold down cover.... the open style as in your picture..... but you will probably have a hard time to match a current battery box size to fit/match the original hold down..... and the full cover which I prefer as it hides the modern 12 v. battery from CTC....

I have a good original battery box and if you need measurements or specific pictures let me know.

Boob.

Mike, your Light Stone looks to be the same colour as the one I came up with. I took one of the IWM colour pix and adjusted the colour until the skin tones were right then took the paint colour and printed out a part of a page with it. I took this to the paint store and they used their computer to come up with the formula. It seems to have worked real good. Are you going to keep yours one colour or add camouflage?

BCBlitz 24-02-09 04:58

Mike

Thanks for the help, do you have a link to the paint Co. ?

The tan looks great, all you need now is the Moo Cow dark brown and it will look like a Nestle Quick truck ! :D

Mike Timoshyk 24-02-09 05:17

To camo or not to camo...that is the question

Hi Dave...

Currently I plan to keep it as is. Once I get a little bored with it I will add a camo pattern and then eventually do a NW Europe color scheme...afterall it is only paint and with a gun it only takes about an hour to do.

cheers

Phil et al,

In reference to the 13 cab style covered battery box, how/where do the cables exit the box???

Bob, I can always count on you for an interesting level of clarity...so which holes specifically? Feel free to add measurements and a detailed description of the part in which the holes exist. You know, something this Artsman can understand..

Geoff, Be careful! Bob will take your comments as encouragement.

Good question - actually you will note that the battery hold downs have a tube spacer that sticks up above the sides, this has two purposes one it keeps the battery posts from shorting on the top of the box second it actually holds the cover up about an inch. You will note that the Pattern 13 battery bock cover has only three sides so the cables go out the back.

Cheers Phil

Bob, See above for example of clarity for artsmen...Phil, as always you continue to amaze! Thanks to both for the fun and info!

Phil Waterman 25-02-09 23:34

Want to know how I found out about the spacers?

Thirty years ago when I was getting my HUP on the road for the first time, per the normal I got last bits done the night before the first antique car show that I wanted to take it to. Of course in the rush I stuck the battery in and forgot to install the hold down bracket. New morning I headed out first turn I made heard an crackling arching sound right under me and started to smell something burning you guess it the battery had shifted and the cover had shorted on the post.

Quickly stopped removed the cover, not much damage actually it had just burned the paint at the points of contact. Anyway stuffed a rag in as spacer on top of the posts and put the cover back on and head on to the show.

When I got home I found the battery hold down and saw that it had tubes on the top to keep the cover from doing what it had just done.

Cheers Phil

I guess it just didn't take you very long to get bored!
By the way, the paint job looks great.
I'll get the door on the bus early next week.

Lookeeng good!

It'd look better with a quad Polsten behind it! Perhaps you might like to drive it up to BBBBBBBBBB (Boobee- how many Bs are in it anyway?!) this summer and drag the Polsten around to see if yer brakes are up to it!

Love those Gunner markings!

Cab 13 Maintenance

2 Attachment(s)
Hi folks,

I have been doing a little maintenance on the Ford. I needed to tighten up the fan belt. Anyone who has tried to do this will certainly appreciate what a pain in the butt it can be. Especially doing it yourself. After a few moments of contemplation I worked out a solution. It may not be new, but for those who will have to address the problem in the future I have provided a couple of pics of how I did it. Of course this means a few more items to carry in the tool box....no wonder it is so big. No wise cracks from you Bow Tie Guys...

cheers from Windsor....home of the Ford CMP
