Just a quick update of the cab 12. I have decided to transform her into a 2 pounder anti tank portee might as well as i have the gun. Would like to see photos of the tray the gun sits on if anyone has any and also the layout of boxes etc. Anyway here is a couple of photos of the resto so far and the not to be done for a couple of years resto.

As for the Portee, search this forum and the rest of the internet, there is quite some material available. I think John Belfield has a restored Portee, so you could get measurements off that one. Looking forward to seeing it completed. H. Attachment 67526 Australian Ford CMP 2 pdr. gun portee |

Hi Shane,
Tim Scrivens has a Cab13 2pdr. anti-tank portee. It looks to be much the same as the Cab12 from the back of the cab. You should be able to get the measurements of it. Attachment 67532 Regards Rick |
The Belfield Portee
I took these several years ago. It was jammed in so it was difficult to get any good ones.
Pics didn't upload - will try another way. |
Another go

Lovely work on the truck, Shane. I am looking forward to your updates on the conversion to portee!
Excellent work on the hinges Colin...I was looking at a cab11 recently and the hinges were absolutely terrible....probably suffered from corrosion, than mangled due to the weight of the door and than welded again. Shanes hinges look very, very nice. Alex |

Am I correct in assuming all Cab 12 portees found in Australia are ex-ME vehicles? Or did we receive some new deliveries earlier?

Gmh
Hi
There is a pic of a cab 12 portee on page 146 , in The history of Holden book by Norm Darwin . Looks like a pic taken at GMH plant somewhere. Not sure if this vehicle was ex ME ? Anyway, years ago I met a chap who was a driver in the AIF, he was a ham radio operator too. We chatted about vehicles and he said among many things, he drove 2 pounder portees from GMH Fishermeans bend up to Puckapunyal . His parents house was in Falkner and he stopped at home to show off the truck to everyone . He was in the ME and mentioned he rode captured ALCI ( pronounced AL CHEE ) or similar Italian motorbikes , he said he loved them . I had my copy of observers book with me . Nice old bloke he was Mike |

Thanks for the photos lads they look great.
Took the wife and little ones to the Royal Adelaide Show to spend a a little family time together on Father's Day.(Spent much a weekend on the resto so i thought it would be the right thing to do) We saw cattle, wood chopping, show bags, snakes, fireworks and so much more.. Attachment 67731 Attachment 67732 Attachment 67733 Now if this is not a sign from above that i should be working on my truck instead of pushing through thousands of people for over six hours i don't know what is Attachment 67734 Attachment 67735 I mean what are the chances people..... Very tempting to go back after hours and get that drivers door for you Tony  |
So you have some competition....
Nice photos Shane.
Any idea what that flat black thing is on the driver's front fender...? Cheers |
The Kruse Cab 12
That truck was rebuilt as a 'replica' of the one in the movie "The Back of Beyond".
It has a few modifications including an extended steering column. Not sure what the black thing is. It wasn't there when I last saw it in Alice Springs. That truck sure gets around! It belongs to Brenton (I think) Kruse, one of Tom Kruse's grand nephews. He lives in Waterloo, S.A. |

Pat 12 Head for Alice Springs
Hi Stuart and Keith
Thanks Stuart for sharing the photo, has been added to my collection. The tag line and the photo are just great, makes you wonder how many CMPs have past over that road and the stories behind their use. Alice Springs is of course an Australian town that people in the rest of the world can lock on to particularly if they are of my generation. Again thanks for the photo. Cheers Phil |

HI all
A few days ago obtained my NOS Cab 12 roof wood and metal all in great condition and will be used on the next project. Today Hugh Davies and i went to pick up the Cab 12 but the tyres were stuffed so we were unable to tow. I guess another drive next week will get things sorted out.. However not all bad news got the Portee :D Attachment 67835 Attachment 67836 Attachment 67837 Attachment 67838 Attachment 67839 |

Amazing to find a NOS Cab 12 roof! And also the Portee body. Congratulations!

Hi all
Thanks Keith you can get lucky sometimes mate. Does anyone know what kind of timber that was used on the portee floor? Has anyone restored one on the forum? Here a few shots of other things laying around in the same paddock. Attachment 67855Attachment 67856 Attachment 67857 Is the thin metal part laying across the mud guard for wires and is it original? Attachment 67858 Thanks in advance. Cheers Shane |
Shane,
Well done on the roof and portee frame. Some nice projects in that paddock. The strip on the cab12 fender is original and indeed used for the wires leading to the marker lights. The two small holes near the end of the strip is where the bracket was bolted on holding the Rubber marker light. These strips were discussed on the forum recently, but I can't seem to find in which thread. I seem to remember they are a cab12 feature, that was introduced somewhere during the cab12 assembly, as not all cab12's have them. Alex |
Pat 12 Chevs have tube
Hi
Pattern 12s Chevs have a metal tube running in the same location to protect the wire for the marker lights. Portee body is a wonderful find. Cheers Phil |
Regarding the tube thing......
I believe the tube is more prevalent on Canadian cab 12 and the flat angle cover more a Holden/Australia design..... am I correct??
On cab 11...... were the fender rubber lights added later.... did the early production models with out the air vents have those lights... and when cab 11 did get the fender lights where was the wiring routed.. ....inside the under fender bracket with the headlight wiring.....? Cheers |
Flat angle
It's certainly not a GM-H thing as Australia only ordered Ford Cab 12s and the only thing we added to those cabs was a roof hatch.
The Chev ones here came in later mostly with the returning troops from the North Africa campaign. In my experience some cab 12s here have them, but most don't. |
I think Phil is right...Chev's use a tube and Fords seem to use an angled strip.
From what I have seen, the strip/tube doesn't show on any cab11's. In fact the Servicepub factory photo's CD only shows the strip/tube on a few cab 12's, but definately not all. I presume early CMP's didn't have marker lights up front at all(?). Maybe some were retrofitted, but I have seen a number of Cab 11's and 12's here which don't show any evidence of any marker light ever being fitted. Alex |

Hi all.
Thanks for the comments lads. Well i have just got the portee back and am happy with the work, i will send it off next month to be blasted. Attachment 68440 Does anyone know how you can tell the difference between a Cab 11 and Cab 12? I have noticed on my new truck that the horn is located near the front of the engine were on my old truck the horn is on the chassis, also the check plating is two different sizes on the new truck. Attachment 68441 Attachment 68442 The id number on the new truck is.. Attachment 68444 Also on another great note we have found a 2 pounder ammo box Attachment 68443 I am looking for a speedo needle if anyone could please help out that would be great. Cheers Shane |

Shane,
The box you asked about many moons ago (with the twin swing lids), is an ammunition container for Polsten drum magazines. They appear to be of GM-H manufacture: never seen anything but. Cab 12 Portees in Australia: two types, those manufactured for British Contracts in Canada, and imported via the ME, and the Australian version of thre same vehicle, manufactured in Australia. There are many small differences, but the stand-out feature is the angle of the stowed gun wheels: Aust are vertical, Brit/Can are angled. Most Aust Portee bodies were removed and a GS body mounted in, I think, early 1944, to help overcome a shortage of tactical load carriers. Mike C |

Thanks Aj and Mike. The ammo box is good news for the museum, i hope that in the near future we may have the Polsten to go with it. There is a picture of the Polsten in above thread which is still laying in a paddock:ergh:
Need to pick your brains again lads, are the following photos original to the Cab 12 or are they a farmers handy work? Attachment 68481 Attachment 68482 Have started to do the cluster which is coming up well. It will only serve as a cosmetic feature as i will be putting in modern gauges. Have sent the generator away to be changed to 12 volt as this seems to be the general recommendation so all globes will have to be changed as well. Attachment 68483 Have been given a speedo needle to replace the one i put in a safe place and now cant find :fry: |
