Hi there!
So how many if any other members on here have Fv1600 1 ton Humber or one of its spin offs? Here is a shot of mine shoe horned in the shed. It was used by the Aust Army untill the mid/late 60's and is a cargo FFW. More info and pics soon! Phil... |

Well here is a photo of it when I first picked it up. It had belonged to a Bush Fire Brigade West of Katoomba NSW and had not gone in many years.
So after 1000 Klm transport up to Brisbane and 4mths of much work the beast was on full road rego and completed a 9000 klm road trip throught central Australia as part of the VP50 bash in 1995. It did an average of 7.5mpg(Imp Gals that is) and consumed $3000 worth of fuel. |

A really good restoration job, and not just a museum piece. Did you have to remove rust from the front corners of the cabtop ? Always found it curious that the makers placed their bonnet catches facing down, ie letting all the water accumulate inside the workings. And that they would produce a 4 ton vehicle with a 1 ton payload. They are a thirsty beast, aren't they ? Jack |
Nice to see a Humber that is loved & used. Fuel consumption not too bad really. The text book is 9mpg on normal roads, off road is not quoted which can be so variable I suppose. Look forward to seeing some more pics esp the chassis plate.

Well my Humber is a std cargo but with some mods to make it a FFW.
Some of the Mods are:- *Small box on the outside rear of the cab on the blanked off window to take harness cable. *Shielded access point near the box to alow harness cable into cab. *Mounting holes on the drivers side of the passenger seat for a Control unit type 'C' or 'D'. *Pre-drilled holes in both sides of the rear body, front and rear for antenna mounts. *Power junction box at the front left inside corner of the head board. Thats about it as the truck still retained the std single speed generator and also winch. Though I have seen 1 with these mods without winch and by it's colours I am guessing it was a ex Woomera truck. Radios were run off battery packs and not the trucks batteries and they were recharged by a 12v 300watt Chore-horse gen set. My truck had rust in all the usual places...roof and sills but overall was in a good condition. Still has its original engine. Best MPG recorded was 9mpg. It's been fitted out with a C11~R210 and C42 set. Back in 1999 I aquired a few ton of NOS and seconhand parts, as well as the remains of another truck. ended up with enough parts to just about build a truck with all new running gear bar the clutch and engine. Also NOS mud guards, fuel tanks, glass, seals etc etc. So currently the "Beast" is off the road as I think one of the CV joints is just about to throw the towel in... so thats parts are going to come in handy now. Ok the previous pic was of the Humber in the NT 1995 after the "Back to the Track" run. Thats a ants nes next to it... you sould see the ants! :eek:
Now the next few were taken at a near by ANZAC day march. We made a special set of stepd to replace the tail gate so we could get the old veterains in to the back. They loved the ride up there in the back! Phil... :salute: |

There are 2 Burnt Humbers south of Nowra NSW, They are or were very complete, one still had all Army markings and both spare tyres still had beads on them.

It is essential both sets are correctly timed 180º apart at the distributor and therefore 360º at the engine by using the marks for No.1 and No.6 cyls respectively. However you will find the movement of the adjustable set also alters the gapping and a few thou here makes a huge difference to the relative sync angle. Its a bit of a fiddle I'm afraid. Do not attempt dynamic timing with a strobe as the mechanical advance is intentionally operative on or about idle and your settings will be very wrong. R. |

similar but different, a very familiar story. I have a Dingo MkIII and while the points that came with it work now, I cannot see them lasting forever. So, a spare set would be a good insurance policy. Finding them is the hard part. The car starts amazingly well, even from cold, so the bench setting and testing I performed on the distributor paid off (or was that just dumb luck?). Besides, it was certainly much easier to work on at bench height. I also have a force gauge, which I use to measure the points (pressure against the cam) and also to measure the pull to remove the feeler gauge. As you said, with twin points there are many variables, carefull setting helps get things balanced fairly well. Thanks for the information. Dave |
