Bogie Wheel Re-rubbering

Guys,

I was able to take my bogie wheel to a company in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, that specializes in casting rubber. I had contacted them regarding our situation concerning the bogie wheels on our carrier (especially the badly checked left and right rear bogies) and they were interested in taking a look.
Their applications engineer took a Durometer test of the spare bogie rubber and he indicated that it was a 70D and that it was synthetic rubber. He informed me that the best that his company could do was 60D. I told him that we weren't going to war with our carrier nor were we going to be putting a lot of miles on the carrier either. He is going to prepare a quote for me to strip, re-apply a 60 D natural rubber tire and turn the tire to the proper 20" outer diameter and tapered width. We are going to have them do all 6 wheels on the carrier plus the spare. I should get the quote sometime next week and I will publish the information on MLU. If there are other interested parties out there, maybe we could coordinate shipment of bogies into North Bay and try and get a bit of a discount?

Regards, Richard

Carrier wheels

I'm in for a 1/2 dozen (depending on cost!). I'm certain there are lots more chunked up carrier wheels out there.

Cheers! Mike :support:remember

I have had four wheels redone in urethane. The company stripped them and recovered and turned them back to specs. Not cheep because of the shipping but they came out great.

Rerubbering bogies: US & Canada

Ray,

Thanks for posting the address of URS. Any US crews out there might be better off sending their bogies to URS. I'm sure Canadian customs and duties paperwork might be a pain in the butt for you guys.

As soon as I find out the pricing, I will post price, company address and contact information for Canadian crews.

Regards, Richard

Hello,

What happened with the re-rubbering plans from over a year ago in the UK?
I believe Richard "The Bricklayer" was the initiator then? I am still interested in pooling together and getting a quantity of wheels re-rubbered.

Cheers,

RichardT10829 27-01-12 20:40

Thanks Alan ! West yorkshire is not far for me at all... i have about 8 wheels need doing plus 4 on the carrier itself.

Marc:-

the chap in North shields gave me a quote but was loaded up with work he was not very interested to be fair.... the other contact was located near london and was cost prohibitive to send stuff to... he did say he would do bulk discount ?

i can start the ball rolling again with the new contacts provided it wont take me long to get some quotes through

Marc van Aalderen 27-01-12 20:44

Alan,

Thank you for the company info. Have you ever done business with them or do you know of others who have?

Richard, that would be nice. I can bring wheels coming to Beltring. Would need to find a way to get them to you or one of these companies though. Let's see what they quote.

Cheers,

RichardT10829 27-01-12 20:51

email sent...will let you know the outcome.

Andrew 27-01-12 22:32

In theory shouldn't any place that can redo forklift tires work?

I'm in need of redoing my half track boogies, thunder bay is at-least in the same province as me, but Toronto area would be alot cheaper in shipping :)

RichardT10829 27-01-12 22:58

its finding a firm that does the correct hardness of rubber....too soft and it will shred in no time at all....too hard and it will shatter like glass.

Sorry, I've not used either of them. The first has been used by the chaps here restoring a Hetzer: http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread...etzer%29/page8

Have you checked out polyurethane? You can get it as hard as you want and it is tougher,so I'm told. I checked with a company in Saskatoon, and poly was cheaper than rubber also.

Price for 60D Tire re-rubber

Guys,

I just received the price quote from Metso Minerals in North Bay. My contact there is quoting $588.00 Cdn per tire. They will strip off the old tire, sandblast the entire rim, apply primer and rubber cement, apply 2nd stage rubber bonding agent and new tire, vulcanize rubber, trim, buff and paint.

How does this price compare to polyurethane?

clarkray 01-02-12 03:48

My cost for urethane was $205.00 per wheel.

WOW thats a lot of money !

RichardT10829 01-02-12 10:58

yeah i thought £70 GBP was bad.... but that is just taking the Mick ! how do they even dream up a price like that Rich ?

Andrew 01-02-12 17:03

Thats crazy. There is a place in the US that will do all that in poly for under 100 to a halftrack boogie. LOL, maybe there is more to a carrier than halftrack.

Alternatives to Re-rubbering

Guys,

Back to the drawing board. I am quoting out both smooth rubber (70D) and polyurethane 20" OD forklift tires. I have found a local machine shop that can press forklift tires onto rims. The have a lathe big enough to hold, part off and machine a 20" forklift tire. The $205.00 each price is very good, the almost $600 price isn't in our budget. I will let post to MLU, under a new thread, as soon as I find out.

I think there is some confusion here...
Richard is quoting some tire recapping prices and bogey wheel rerubering is getting into the mix also...
There is a hell of a difference..
First of all I am not familiar with a Price for 60D Tire re-rubber

What is a 60D Tire...??60"Diameter tire..??
smooth rubber (70D)???

What the hell are 60D and 70D tires..??
Give some proper sizes and straighten me up please..
These are definitely not carrier bogie wheels..
Thanks.

20" forklift tire. The $205.00 each price is very good

Alex 60D and 70D are hardness tests for rubber as tested with a durometer.

durometer scale

Carrier Friends,
I know it has been a sore point on the forum before as McMaster Carr will not ship outside the united states but I do like their representation of durometer which can be found on this link.

Crossing the border can be arranged.....

MacMaster will ship to US address and arrangements for pickup or secondary delivery and pick up for border crossing can be arranged...... Gunner knows what I mean and it is all legal.... you will incur shipping and PST and GST at the border. Good UC wheels are in such short supplies that if they can be economically and approriately retired it can be done.

Hardness, appearance, durability and price all has to be worked out by the buyer or buyers with some experimentation......

RichardT10829 02-02-12 12:29

for the UK and Europe contingent's I have emailed the firm as provided by Alan twice with no replie's, and have tried ringing to no avail, will keep trying though.

Dave Schindel 04-02-12 20:46

The price I got for polyurethane was about $400 per wheel. Way high.
I'm doing my own.I have the mold finished and will pour the poly as soon as I can get into Regina to pick some up.
My plan is to use a Shore 90 hardness.
I think I can do it for about $100 a wheel, depending on price of the poly.

Doug Lavoie 05-02-12 06:32

Dave,
Good luck with your project. Will be watching how it turns out. I had a quote from a firm in Nisku AB for $300 per wheel in 90 poly. There has to be a better price out there!

Hi Rich and all.
Re urethanes,we are involved in the shoe/boot trade, urethane used as footwear sole making material has a limited life span, like 6/7 years before it starts to crumble and break down(hydrolises(?)) ,There are some life extending additives available now maybe out to 12-14 years......So ask around of the companies offering retiring about how long the material can be expected to last .

Point 2 .In the shoe trade when the chemicals mix they give off a highly Toxic substance and at that point they must be handled with extreme care .The mixing and storage point are in a special sealed room to protect workers. The stuff is carcenogenous. We have heard of a service engineer dying of Cancer from limited exposure to the material.

So please if you plan to do this at home do lots of research on the material we want you all to live to a ripe old age ,and especially keep your family away if you insist on pressing on with home mixing.

Best Regards,
Bruce.
