Lynx Hull number?

2 Attachment(s)
Hi, I am trying to work out the stamps on the front of my Lynx.

On the observers side of the front plate is stamped 1-45 Ford 4554. I am assuming that this is the build date and hull number.

On the opposite side in front of the driver is stamped 3419, any ideas what this number represents?

Thanks
James

Ours at the Shilo museum has the number 4542 and the same build date. I'll have to have a look for that other number.

Generally, the production number of 3255 is given for the lynx, as a result of a factory photo with that production quantity stencilled on the vehicle. That quantity is also given in the production numbers given towards the front of the design records.

James,

I have a Lynx 11 that I am restoring and it's data plates were missing and I'm going through the same quest as you.

I was able to obtain from Brian Asbury very good copies of SC-F3, Workshop Manual - Car-Scout-Ford 11- Lynx 11, and FSC2-01, Spare Parts List for Car Scout Ford 11 (Lynx 11). Excellent reproductions, money well spent. I was also able to obtain a copy of LNX-OM1, Operator's Manual, Ford, Car, Scout, Ford 11, Lynx 11, from the National War Museum. Poor quality reproduction, but lots of good information.

The spare parts manual states that the serial number for the Lynx 11 starts at 3001. It also states that there are separate numbers for the model identification number (I'm assuming C19SR for the Lynx 1 and C29SR for the Lynx 11), a Serial number, a Hull serial number, Engine serial number and contract number. Rob's number of 3225 for the entire production run is frequently quoted, so if we knew how many Lynx 1s were manufactured, and if the hull numbers were in sequence we should be able to figure out our Serial numbers.

I was only aware of the numbers in front of the observers position, until you put up your post. Went back and spent some time with sandpaper in front of the drivers position, I did find a very faint 4225, which is also the hull number.
On the observers side there is the build date of Nov 44 and hull number 4225. At right angles to this, along the leading edge there is also the number F71813, followed by 20, in small case numbers. I am not knowledgeable enough to know if this is the Serial number or the Contract number.

Hope this helps. Should you, or anyone else, know more on this subject, please share. Peter

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the info on the manuals, I will contact Brian and see if he still has any available.

My Lynx also has its army census number stamped F72106. I contacted a friend who has records of Canadian census numbers and F69704 to F72703 were allocated to Lynx MK1. This is nearly 3000 vehicles so virtually the whole Lynx production run.

James
