Staghounds

Greetings, Vegemite-type-guy:

Excellent pics of the Staghound.

They were, for some reason, notorious for being bogged down during FTXs.

Our (Canadian) Armoured Corps used these, in a Recce role, up to about the late '50s, IIRC.

I do remember Tango call signs asking for Bluebell assistance, in the field.

(Tango call signs=Armour, Bluebell=RCEME request for pulling out another stuck Staghound.)

Staghound

Hi Jon

Thanks for your memories - I think they're a great looking vehicle but can understand how they'd get into trouble... Are there many preserved in your currently frozen land of maple syrup?

zemsi 11-01-06 17:51

... we have one in Switzerland at the Tankmuseum in Thun   . Will post a pic if I find it.

Not sure, Keefy, but at least one out west. There may be one in the CWM as well, but as far as private hands are concerned, someone else will have to chip in with info THEY may have.

The only one that I am aware of is at Base Borden.

With what's going on there, who knows what's going to happen to it? :confused :rolleyes

Just add abit of interest to this one here is a couple of images of staghounds not seen before
My wifes uncle was a member of the RAF armourd car regt and whilst in Palestine in 1946 they were issued with some Staghounds i would imagine to give better fire power and protection.

The second photo i have no idea where or when this parade is taking place, you guys on the continent might know

Keith; Great shots of DiamondTs and recymechs keeping tankies from staying in "hulldown/turretdown" mode.

Hi Guys,

I've attached a photo of Marco Hogenkamp, Lichtenvoorde, Holland.

Marco's T17E1 (M6) Staghound is fully operational and recently participated in the 60th anniversary V-E Day events May 5/8, 2005, in Holland covering over 500 km. This was the cover photograph for the summer issue of Army Motors, the quarterly journal of the MVPA.

Hodgson's Staghound walkaround photos ?

Hi Al,

Very nice pictures. Do you know if there is any on-line walkaround photo for the same vehicle(Hodgson's Staghound) ?

M/w, there is another Staghound in Bovington Tank Museum. It is an early version(see below link picture. Different engine deck and different side armour). Do you have more photos ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Curtis,

If you "google" around on internet on searchkey "staghound" you'll find several sites with Stag photo's.

Mine is on the 12th Manitoba Dragoons website:

Best regards,

Marco Hogenkamp

Very true Jon, something the Germans also discovered during the war!

Staghound photos

Hi Al and Marco,

Thanks for the pictures & link. I already visited the Dragoons website before but all of the vehicles are late version. The one in Bovington is an early version but I cannot find more info about this.

Hi Derek,
Your attached photo is a Panhard 178 instead of Staghound.

Best Regards,
Kurtis

On the subject of bogging down a Staghound:

This is quite easy!
While having fun on an army range, I encountered very soft sand and the Stag immediately dug in with all 4 wheels spinning.
It was resting on its bottom plate within 2 seconds.

In deep mud, the same thing would have happened.
The car has plenty of power but a load of 3500 kg's on each wheel makes the car handle like a fork-lift in these circumstances.
"Touching" the verges beside the road easily results in the car tipping over.
So solid underground is essential here.

For Kurtis: What information do you want on early type Stags?
(I think with "early" you mean the version with the bolted engine covers?)
I have information about Stag serial numbers and the modifications made during production.
Also, there are several photo's from early Stags.

While looking at WWII photo's, it seems that (for obvious reasons) British and Canadian units prefered the late type Stag with hinged engine covers and the M24A1 gun mount.
The early ones were passed to Polish units...

Marco

Early production Staghound

Hi Marco,

Yes, "early" means the version with the bolted engine covers. Some of the early version with small doors at both sides of turret and without "U" hook and no smoke-discharge on the top.

I saw some WW2 photos for New Zealand/Polish units in Italy 1944 winter, the left side commander hatch was modified open hinges to the front instead of left side. So the hatch could be used as a map table. Do you have more info about this ? Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Kurtis
