Hi Bruce
Bang on. I was in St John's for a few days recently and had a chance to poke around below the Fort Amherst lighthouse. It's on the other side of the harbour entrance from Signal Hill and Cabot Tower. There are two guns below in the remains of concrete fortressing below the level of the lighthouse. 4.7in Mk II. And I crossed The Crow's Nest off my bucket list. :) regards Darrell |
Bruce: Betcha Colin told you that....?

It always warms my heart to see young folks stepping up and doing their part to preserve points of Canadian history by liberal application of rattle can paint jobs.

I was thinking the same. While a heavy coat of grey paint would help preserve it even better from the salt air, the back alley artists are doing their part.
I was surprised to see how well the nomenclature on the barrel still reads. |

Hi
The whole area is fenced and out of bounds so I doubt that there is any intent to preserve it. A hang out for various levels of society best not even imagined. Hate to be there on a summer evening about 2am. The concrete they poured down the cliff face is quite degraded. It looks like there was some efforts to demolish some of it. All the low areas in the different terraced positions and rooms were full of ice. You could see where it swelled and froze and thawed and froze etc. The blow there and the ocean swell is impressive. Very destructive too, I suppose. If there is no plan to preserve the site then those guns will just tip into the sea some day. regards Darrell |
