Originally a bayonet frog, I think (see below) but reissued to hold the pliers (which were too long to fit in Pouch, Tool, Linemans).

I've always been a bit sceptical about the safety of a pair of pliers in an open-topped sleeve like that, and I reckon the Australians felt the same way because their pliers frog had an added strap with snap fastener.

^ Similar to but not the same as the bayonet frog.

Pliers Frog

As 'The Tales From the Supply Depot' website alluded to, this web Pliers Frog was a carry-over from the pre-SWW Battery Staff Equipment Web Equipment Set. I first encountered on of these web frogs back in the early 1980s when I purchased a M1910 Ross Bayonet with one attached and have left it as found, 'just in case'.

Picked up a new one at Beltring (which was far too hot) today, and the designation has now changed:

8465-99-973-6254 - FROG,WIRE CUTTER

Manufacturer is HFS and dated "90".

There's apparently another entry in the catalogue:

8465-99-973-6253 - FROG,WIRE CUTTER

But I have no idea of the difference (if any - it may be a typo, or for a different sized tool).

Okay:

8465-99-973-6253 - FROG,WIRE CUTTER equates to CN0960 (more properly to CN/AA.0960) which is the frog/carrier for the folding barbed wire cutters.
8465-99-973-6254 - FROG,WIRE CUTTER equates to CN0980 (likewise really CN/AA.0980) which is the carrier for a pair of linesman pliers.

Chris.
