Ford Artillery tractor No.3 - No.3A Aust info wanted

Hello All,

First I will introduce myself.
My name is Leon Hassing.
I am a model maker from Holland.
I am a long time fan of this site and am amazed every time by the knowledge here :note:

There is now a model of the German Ford V3000 truck by ICM.
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...7-thickbox.jpg
I would like to convert it to a Australian Artillery tractor No.3A
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...63CAQVOHQF.jpg

So now my question is, could any one help me with pictures of the chassis with the winch or the tire pump for the No.3 tractor.
I hope you can help me

All the best

Leon

3a or 3

Leon,

I have just completed a restoration of a Ford/Marmon Herrington 3A gun tractor. I have not finished adding the winch yet but I do have one to install. I also have a No.3 which still has the tyre pump fitted. This truck is unrestored and very rough but I can get you photos of the tyre pump and fittings. Does the Ford truck model you have got come as a four wheel drive version like the gun tractors or are you going to add something to it to make it four wheel drive.

Hello Jack,

Thanks for your quick response. :thup2:

The model is rear wheel drive.
I will have to build the complete drive train to.
I do have some info on this, but any pics of this would be very much appreciated.
My preference would be the 3A with the winch.

Could we see some pics of your restored truck?

Thanks in advance

All the best

Leon

Leon,

I will get some organized but in the meantime you can see a picture if you go to the corowa 2011 post on this forum under shows and events.

Hi Leon,

I too make scale models and looked at scratch building one of these. I do have some info such as measurements of the body etc. somewhere and will look for them if you are interested. Beware of the front axle it is a different configuration to the usual CMP Ford front axle as it has the 'diff head' on the opposite side to the normal Ford front driven axle. :)

Jack, Thanks for your help, and i'l have a look at shows and events.

Cliff, I have seen your models here on this site and am impressed by your eye for detail.
I have a model in 1:76 from 4 mil models in Metal.
I was going to take measurements from it for the Body, But if you have actual measurements than I am sure interested.
Thanks for your help.

I will include some pics from some models I have build. :D

First is a cmp from TONDA discussed in the other post in the sergeants' mess.
It is a very nice model in resin and some Photo etch.

Great

I like the 1938 chevy ute . The army here had some in a open cab/soft top configuration fitted out as radio cars . None of them have survived as far as I know.

3 or 3A

Does anyone know what's the story of the gun tractor at the Australian War Memorial? I have seen it in storage at the annex and at first it seems to be a 3A, with winch. But there is no drive to the winch from the transfer case. Perhaps it is a mix of a 3A body on a 3 chassis?

Bob Schutt up at Monto in QLD restored it. The AWM bought it from him: Unless they have more than one ? Any vehicle restored by Bob is top shelf ...

3A tractor

I don't know if the AWM have more than one gun tractor. The one I saw carried number AIF H-14971, and was in excellent condition. Full marks to Bob Schutt for his work. I was hoping to help Leon out with his winch question, but aren't sure about the winch in that tractor. As the photo shows, the winch isn't connected to any drive (transfer case PTO?), hence my hesitation about it's accuracy.

3a winch

I took a lot of photos from the AWM 3A during my restoration. I obtained a similar winch which I have yet to fit. I can confirm there is no drive from the gearbox to the winch. I will be going over to SA in August to look at the 3A in the museum in Adelaide. I have been told they have all the correct parts between the gearbox and wich so hopefully I can photograph what I need to find or fabricate. There are a couple of bits on the AWM 3A that I am not too sure about, especially the seat. I havenīt forgotten your potos Leon. I am in South America at present for the next mnth but hopoe to get them organized when I get back. Can you send me a PM with an email address so I can forward them.
