Canadian Dodge ūT APT

5 Attachment(s)
Hello all,

I am Danny Croone from the netherlands and new to the forum. Reason why i joined? Some 40 years ago my grandfather took apart a Canadian Dodge APT together with a US WC-51. Now we are left with a big puzzle :)
Hope to find some info on the APT, especially for identifying all the parts i find.
For that i require a (digital) partslist, already sent a PM to Grant Bowker but maybe somebody else can provide one?

The engine that is on the truck does not belong there, it is a T214 (likely from the US WC-51). The original T236 is present but in parts. No ID plate in the cabin as the glovebox door is not there (well, not found it yet) but there is a norwegian army plate inside the cabin. The framenumber is 91168137.

When the truck is "collected" together it will likely be sold. My grandfather is in his 80's and i do not have time to restore it, a shame.
I am sure i will folow up this post with questions....

Welcome Aboard - Jigsaw Puzzles are us

Hi Danny

Interesting puzzle, once bought a motorcycle that came in three baskets, yes it went back together and even ran well.

Agree shame you don't have the time to restore it, as you might find it an interesting challenge. If you do decide to take on the challenge of reassembly, other people have play the game of post pictures of parts and asking what is it with good success on MLU. At least here it is pretty certain what truck the parts came from, gets a little more challenging when parts are from lots of different trucks.

Moving on to the issue of selling the truck as a unit which is the best way to see that what looks to be a pretty solid truck actually gets restored, and not broken up for parts with lots of it just ending up as scrap.

To that effort to make a more attractive restoration project document as much as possible what parts are there. If you have space lay them out on like a blue tarp in groups of about meter square, so that each part can be seen them take pictures put a piece of paper, card etc. with a number in each photo group of parts. Photograph the truck so as to try and cover the whole truck.

Name of the game is to let a knowledgeable restorer get a clear picture of whats there and what the condition is.

Perhaps others on MLU could suggest other Dodge focused web sites the Netherlands or Europe which might be good to contact.

Best of luck.

Cheers Phil

Helo Phil,

Thank you for your advice.
I wil certainly document/photograph all parts but first i need a partslist for that.
Fortunately most parts from the WC-51 interchange with the APT but not all.
For example, i found splash guards (if that's what they are called) with different lenght. The T236 engine is a bit longer than it's american counterpart.

Same for the hood which also has a gap on the passenger side, apperantly for running through a tube (deep wading). Speaking of that, i found a waterproof distributorcap that does not seem to belong to the ATP as they where round (with threaded holes for the cables, example photo taken from this forum). Can this cap be a post war norwegian army upgrade? Not found the other half yet :)
Somebody suggested it might be for an M37...

Does anybody have a manual and partslist for the Dodge APT?
I prefer digital copies for now.
Please let me know...

Hello Danny,

Try contacting Grant Bowker, he has an extensive library of manuals.

Or Brian Asbury, see his reply to another thread years ago:

Thx Hanno, PM's sent.

Hi Danny, I know my way around the wc51.
The cap has only 5 terminals. It is 4 cylinder= jeep.
Yes the APT has the hood cut out.
At first glance , all that stuff in the box is later type WC51 except the brake drum, assuming that's what it is.
I am looking for an early, all steel cargo bed (tray or rear deck) for one, along with the outer windscreen frame, a fuel tank, the tail gate, head board, and one seat base. maybe I should buy your Dodge?

Hello Lynn,

This is the problem, i have a mix of (late) WC-51 and APT parts. Need to sort them out :) The brake drum is what it is, for the handbreak behind the gearbox.
The cap has 6 terminals so it is for a 6 cylinder. The high voltage cable should have it's connection on the bottom part which i have not found yet.
So...M37 or also APT but post war norwegian army upgrade?
Buy my dodge...i wonder what the shippingcost would be from the netherlands to NZ :)

I have sent a few PM's to various forum members for the APT manuals (and also have a few answers back). After my holiday i decide what to buy and from whom...

Danny,

Maybe these links are also of interest to you.....even though it doesn't go into extreme detail and part numbers:

Ron Perry, the owner of the website and MLU member, passed away a few years ago, so I don't know if the website will be around for much longer.

Just looking at the comparisons. The last two pictures are the tow hooks.
I have never seen a 3/4 ton U.S. Dodge weapons carrier with a rotating pintle hook. Only ever seen that on the T223 (WC62 and WC63)

The distributor top is, I believe, for an M37. The reason for no HT lead is that the coil (24 Volt) is within the ignition unit.
The M37 also has a rotating pintle hook.

Alex, thank you very much for the links! Very usefull.

For the distributor cap: M37 production started in 1951, also canadian M37CDNs where produced. The M37 used the same straight6 engine as it's WW2 predesessors.
The Dodge APT was produced in 1945 in 2 batches (of around 5000 each) I found out that the APT i have is from the second batch and these where, unlike the first batch, wadeproofed.
We never had M37 in the family so my only guess is that the norwegian army, my APT was used in, did an "upgrade" from the original wadeproof (round) distributor to the M37 wadeproof distributor. But...this one is 24V
Here is a photo i found on the net.
