Armoured plate identification

3 Attachment(s)
Hello,

I have found this plate with a british tank fire extinguisher in Normandy, south of Caen, canadian sector.

I first supposed that it was the engine cover plate of a Sherman but I was unable to find photos with the same part. The hooks on backside could make think that the plate was vertically positioned.

It very probably comes from a british vehicle as Bostik black compound used to waterproof vehicles during landing can be seen all around the plate.

The plate dimensions are 1210x556 mm. The thickness is 15 mm.

Does anyone have an idea of which vehicle it comes from?

Best Regards,
Raphaël

Cromwell or centaur engine deck plate.

Mark is correct though I would suggest Cromwell rather than Centaur as it is the later style rear corner plate whereas Centaur generally retained the smaller, two piece plates for the brake covers.

Thank you both for your responses. I searched for pictures on the net but I haven't found exactly the same part. There was probably numerous versions. I recognized however the lock mechanism on a Centaur engine plate.

Best Regards,
Raphael

It could be Comet as that inherited the same part from late Cromwell but given its location, it is more likely Cromwell. You should find a picture ok if you do a picture search for 'Comet tank engine decks'
