HI guys,,
Can any of you armour guys tell me what gear box is fitted to this carrier please,The late owners son told me that is father said the gear box was from a two man tank that was bought in from New Guines after the war

Looks like the transfer case out of a Stuart Tank

looks like its fairly modified any chance of side view photos ??

the photos i posted are of a late model Stuart the early model/version is probably the vehicle that provided the transfer box in your carrier .

Ron,

It is a long and hopeful shot, but if the gearbox came from a "two man tank", it could have come from a Marmon-Herrington Two Man Tank, the Marmon-Herrington CTLS-4TAC or -4TAY (depending on where the turret was mounted).

Thanks for your reply. Is there any demand for this type of thing I am only into carriers now and dont know if I should drag this gear box home or not? I would only be using it for trading material, as I intend to take the carrier wheels and track only,

Everything is worth money !, and if the gearbox is out of a Marmon Herrington then it will be a rare thing . If the Transfer case still turns and looks rebuildable then someone will definately want it for a restoration and if no one wants it you a least have a seriously cool doorstop ! :D
I would say recover the carrier yank the transfer case out take a look inside and out for markings then get it identified then sell it and put the money towards restoring the carrier .

Hi Plushy,
If you check the carrier forum, under todays trip you will see a pic of the side of the carrier, its not a good one but you might get an idea of what its like from it,
I will not be going back for a couple of weeks to take the carrier wheels and track, if anyone is interested they can let me know I will take more pics next time,

Thanks for your previous reply regarding my latest carrier find,you have me interested with your comments that its possable that the gear box maybe from a Marmon Herrington two man tank, this fits in with what the late owners son told me, is there any chance that you or some of the armor boys might have some pics of the drive train of the Marmon Herrington incidently the motor that is still in the carrier was described as a large six cylinder petrol motor, I will shortly have more details,

I have no extensive specs of the drive train of the Marmon Herrington two man tank. I do know the Marmon Herrington Company used commercially available components and that the engine was a Hercules 6 cylinder petrol engine developing 118 bhp at 3500 rpm. The gearbox must have been sourced from a company who´s main business was gearboxes, but I have no idea which company this was. Maybe the same one who manufactured gearboxes for other light tanks?

after just reading Hanno`s reply i think you will need to spend some time and throughly photo graph the engine ,gearbox and transfer case so we can do some more investigation into the origins of the Drive train . If it does come from a Marmon Herrington tank then it is probably one of only a few left in the world and is definately worth saving .

I will take your advise and drag it all home soon,pull it to pieces and take lots of pics from all angles I will keep the wheels for another carrier that I would like to restore,the rest I am prepared to trade off towards a good carrier hull together with other tank parts that I have from the old days

I have posted a few more pics of that transfer case fitted to the carrier that I bought home today, there are a few pics showing how it is mounted into the carrier, if you have a look in the carrier forum you will see them, any information would be appreciated I have no use for this box but its to good to throw away,
