Jeep M38A1 / cdn2

We need the part number for :electrical rotor and set of point.
This is for our new old 1970 ambulance M38A1 / CDN2.

Parts are identical to any Willys jeep with the 4 cylinder motor. Although the military jeeps had a different cap and coil as a result of the waterproof system, the points, condensor and rotor are the same.

For instance, if you are using NAPA for your parts, the rotor would be AL104 and the points set would be either CS725ASB or CS725. I prefer the first number of the two as the design is closer to the original.

Sealed spark plugs are also available from NAPA, but not cheap. The Autolite number of 2245 is the cheaper choice at $22.59 retail or $12.01 trade price.

If you order through the US, Rock auto will cut all those prices in half or better, but you will lose any savings with the increase in postage costs.

I have purchased the Repair Manual #7610-21-848-1570 from Brian C. Asbury
It is exactly what needed for this jeep and the CDN3 as well.
Merci beaucoup Brian.

We need the part number for the oïl filter element, missing on our new old 1970 Willys.
Merci
Gilles

Don't need a manual for that one: NAPA 1010 . There are about 20 other numbers for the same filter including Fram C3P, Fram C134PL, etc etc.

I believe the 1010 was for the civilian F-134 (my 3B) and is smaller. The Wix 51100 or NAPA FIL 1100 was for the A1 (at least my 67) and is larger...

You are right. The NSN for the military junior is 2940-141-9025.

Here is a link to the NSN search which gives manufacturer's numbers:
http://www.dlis.dla.mil/webflis/pub/...9025&newpage=1

One of those on there is the C21P (a familiar number), which I translate over to the NAPA 1100.

In all honesty though, either will work. The 1100 has a more surface area, but since it is just a partial flow oil filter, if you ever were to actually plug the filter, your engine would likely already be toast. About 15% of the oil goes through the filter while the other 85% goes directly to the bearings.

Please keep the info coming we are trying to make the 1st July Montréal Parade to honour our Vets.
We are still looking for a roof and the metal structure for the ambulance : :salute:.

If you need to make something complete for a display, I have tarp, side curtains and doors, plus the arch and (maybe) the door rods. Not an ambulance, but the standard M38A1 Jeep. You can have them for the summer campaign season on a DND 638.

If you are looking for the ambulance kit, there are 3 or 4 of those out in the local scrapyard. Basically it is a deck that fits on to the back of the Jeep making it long enough to accept stretchers. Seems to me there are light brackets and some supports that run back to the rear bumper.

The kits range from new (cardboard boxes have decomposed off them over the decades) to used.

PM me for contact information if you feel you have to have one. Not sure how transportation would be arranged.

Rob thank you for the offert, but we have the kit.
What we are looking for are the roof, the side walls and the back curtain.
In the scrapyard is there any parts of the above?

I doubt he has those items, but I'll ask him.

I suspect your best bet may be to make up some measurements and have a place like beachwood canvas make it up, or some other custom canvas maker. If you go with a company that already makes canvas for the military jeeps you will have a much better end product than if you go with a tent and awning company.

maple_leaf_eh 03-06-14 16:44

It goes without saying that 45yr old canvas will have plenty of weaknesses - rotten fabric, oxidized thread, frayed straps, etc. The vinyl windows are just coarsely sewn onto the canvas. So, whatever you start with is going to be more fragile than something brand new.

Our New / Old M38a1 Cdn2 Jeep has a defective 24 volts alternator where do we get this fix ?

Gilles

On your way home from work next week (but not election day), come by the house and you can see what I have in the Rubbermaid tubs. Or, what is sitting on the rebuild crate ....

Hit me up on outlook for the address.

chris vickery 09-06-14 00:47

Gilles, any auto electric place that rebuids starters, alternators etc should be able to help, especially an old school place. My friend up in Guelph ON can rebuild anything.

rob love 09-06-14 03:29

There are several interchangeable models that will replace that 60 amp alternator (NSN 2920-00-909-2483 off the top of my head). Quite frankly, they can often be repaired by replacing the voltage regulator, which is the whole rear plate on most of them. But before that, try and adjust the voltage. You have to remove a small allen key plug, and with a small screwdriver you turn a little potentiometer until you get a charge of around 28 volts.

The MLVW has an interchangeable alternator. You could check with prefair surplus and see if they still have any. The same alternator was also used on the 5 ton diesel, the M151A2, and the 5/4 ton in case you have access to any of those for parts.

They are also on ebay all the time. A search for that NSN shows them starting at $375 or best offer. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Prestolite-A...f81e13&vxp=mtr

My M151A2 alternator has a CAT Diesel exchange program sticker on it.

That may be the result of your alternator coming off a US military truck like the M35A3 which used a cat engine, although I cannot say for sure if it used this alternator, although quite possible. The M900 series of trucks also used these alternators.

These alternators were also used as a direct replacement and an upgrade for the M37, the M135, and the old gas 5 tons like the M62 if they needed the extra amperage. There was even an official modification to install them in the Canadian Ferret scout cars. I went one step further and installed them in any FV432s that I worked on or owned.
