starting handle cover

I am after several years still on the lookout for a universal carrier starting handle cover , tried to copy one , but can`t find the right material .
Is there somebody out there who has a spare one ? I also have some exchange bits if somebody wants to swap.
thanks Maurice

Lynn Eades 22-05-14 00:38

Maurice do you want some measurements?

Maurice Donckers 22-05-14 20:57

Hi Lynn, I got the measurements , but with the machinery I have got , I can`t make the inside thread .So maybe somebody has an original one .

starting handle cover

Is this the part that on the end of the handle that goes on the long rod with four keyways ?

John A. Rippingham 02-06-14 08:24

Drawing.

Hello,

Has anyone got a drawing of this cover? i'll have a go at making a few. Whats the "special material" maurice, are they made of gold like some other carrier parts i've come across.....

thanks

John

I will put up a sketch tomorrow evening.

Thank you Lynn

starting cover

Ross I sent you a message I have made some for the guys and they look very original .

George McKenzie 03-06-14 05:58

handle cover

I can't get my picture to stick .but here is how to make the cover .Very simple .Take a pipe connector 1.5" Diameter .Get a 1" bolt and machine off the top of the head about 1/8" deep to fit in the connector . Then machine the bolt end so as to attach the chain on it . Stick it in the pipe connector and spot weld it then clean up the weld so it is smooth .I can send you detail pictures of this if you have Email . George

John and others.
As rough as it looks the details are there, if you want an accurate one.
John, i wouldn't mind getting one if you're planning a run of them. I'd like one without the hex machined onto it. Just plain round. I will be at W&P.

The Rotherham fitting is nothing to do with it.

John A. Rippingham 03-06-14 12:28

Thanks Lynn.

Thanks for the details lynn. Just a couple of questions, is the thread 7 threads per inch? i guess it'll be a BSF form, so if it is 7tpi then it looks like 1 3/4 bsf thread. Is the cap made of steel or brass?

Will see what i can do before war and peace. I just need to find something to gauge the threads.

I have been told there is an hydraulic endcap that looks very similar.

John.

Lynn Eades 03-06-14 12:40

John, I think there is a total of 7 threads. It is cast steel. (to speed up manufacture and reduce material consumption, I guess)

John A. Rippingham 03-06-14 13:03

Maybe not

I'll have a look at the cover on my carrier, should be able to workout the tpi, but it has had a few knocks over the years so is shaped like an egg!

:drunk:

Lynn Eades 03-06-14 13:37

Many are like that John, with not so many having the caps.

John A. Rippingham 03-06-14 13:41

That'll make running a batch off interesting. But thats why i like engineering, better than any crossword...... :bang:

Lynn Eades 03-06-14 14:29

Cutting internal threads on a lathe........ I think i'd do better at the crossword:ergh:

John A. Rippingham 03-06-14 16:37

Keep the crossword

I prefer the criptic ones, i'll be doing the thread on a milling machine

eddy8men 04-06-14 00:14

i am also missing the cap and would like to get hold of one but i always assumed it would be BSP thread ?

Lynn

Lynn, if you are coming to war and peace bring your downpipe, we can do the exchange there?.

John A. Rippingham 04-06-14 08:36

Bsp thread.

Hello Rick,

I thought you might need one, i'm also having a go at the plungers for the vision shutters, i think you needed them to?

Thanks for your input, its not BSP, from lynns drawing i think its about 14-15 tpi we're looking for and BSP is 11. BSF is 7 tpi, so i'm still not sure.

How round is the starting handle plate on your carrier rick?

John

eddy8men 04-06-14 20:04

it's in great condition although maybe a little bit of corrosion on the threads but if you need it give me a shout and i'll take it off for you.

rick

Ben 04-06-14 20:47

I'll try and remember to bring a thread gauge home from work to confirm the pitch.

All I did was work out the diameter and machine the thread at the correct TPI a little at a time, trying the "nut" until I got a good fit. It'll be easy on a cnc mill, I was using an old fashioned Myford, winding it off and reversing before it bottoms out. Not something I want to do again:ergh:

John's the man for the job :note:

starter cover

Standard pipe thread worked just fine for the Canadian carriers

eddy8men 05-06-14 09:47

nice one george. i had a feeling it was a standard thread and not some one of a kind. cheers

Looking great John. You'll have to kick them around the car park once you're done, give them some patina :)

John A. Rippingham 11-08-14 20:26

Hello Ben,

They do look a bit new, I'll try one in the rotor barrell and see how it comes out.
