I'm confused!
|
Hi James, Are we talking fieldguns and inches, or am I way of beam?
|
Considering we are in the gunpark, I think you are bang on Lynn. (did you catch the pun?)
|
Rob, This IS a world wide forum. There are lots of possibilities including centimeters. I otained my heavy trailer license towing a 5.5.
Did the 5.5 evolve from a 4.5? |
They were developed at the same time and used the same carriage if nothing else. I would be surprised if any 4.5" examples have survived out-side of Museums.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BL_4.5_...dium_Field_Gun The link is not 100% accurate. |
There are a few 4.5's knocking about infact there is one 20 miles from here where I live but not many people know the differences between the 4.5 and 5.5 and assume they are all 5.5" Medium Guns. Both big lumps even still.

Sorry for the confusion everyone. We are currently restoring the remains of three medium guns: 4.5-inch and two 5.5-inch. We are hoping to end up with one of each caliber. I believe that both the 4.5-inch and the 5.5-inch used identical carriages, the only difference being the barrels. The easiest way to spot the difference at a glance is that the 4.5-inch barrel is longer and obviously not as thick :) Any help re parts would be gratefully received.
