Engineers and the London Blitz

1 Attachment(s)
Much has been chronicled of the exploits of the Engineers throughout the world during WWII, but little has been covered of their duties on the Home Front. The London Blitz kept Engineers hopping to repair the damage done by German bombs to the buildings, streets, bridges, and subways. Here is a picture of a 150' long box girder bridge erected by R.E.s over a large crater created January, 1941 when a german bomb penetrated the street and exploded in the Bank Tube ticket station below.

Here's another picture showing the damage in stark detail done by the Germans during the Blitz.

I have an RE Bomb Disposal and UXB booklet that shows some interesting points about blast damage.
Some pics:

And about location of UXB's. (I noted in one episode of Foyle's War that the producers made an almost exact copy of the type of pits shown here, nice attention to accuracy!)

Great pictures Tony, thanks for sharing them. It's interesting to note that the depth chart lists British bombs up to and including the 22,000lb "Grand Slam". Perhaps the authors of the booklet were being proactive in case any unexploded 22,000 ponders were found once Germany was occupied?
I've included a picture of a roped off London street with a lantern and UXB sign...one of many seen during the Blitz, I'm sure.
