10.50-16 directional tyres

1 Attachment(s)
Further to the discussion on 10.50-16 directional tyres in the thread 9.00-13 Tyres, I've found Steve Kagi is trying to generate enough interest in "10.50 x 16 directional Denman 8-10 ply tires" to order a batch - go to the WW2 Dodge Forum and scroll down to Steve's message titled "Tires" (dated Sat Aug 14, 2004 13:44).

So if you're interested, let Steve know about it!

HTH,
Hanno

P.S.: see pictures of one of these tyres next to a WWII Goodyear 9.00-16 directional tread Combat tire here.

10.50-16 directional tyres as fitted to Keith Orpin's C30 LAAT (source: C30 Update):
http://www.mapleleafup.org/forums/at...=&postid=14157

What exact brand of tyres does your C30 have, Keith?
Are they runflats?

The ones we see here

This is a post-war produced Australian chevron - I think 9.00 16

And some NOS 10.50 20 tyres:

These two were auctioned last year (2003) by Colin Anderson of Shepparton

Keith, I took the liberty to move your posting from article on tyre tread patterns to this thread.

Could it be a 10.50-16? Looks to be wider, more bulbous than a 9.00-16.

Those NOS 10.50-20's are an amazing find!

I'll endeavour to have a look or perhaps Max, if you see this - could you please ask Ashley to check the size.

OLYMPIC BRAND

Olympic tyres here were making 9.00 X 16's until the early 1970's in the WW2 directional chevron pattern . The Army reserve were using 25 pounders until as late as 1975 . And , it is likely that Olympic were making small batches of tyres for the guns . I have seen a few of these tyres around , at Corowa this year somebody had one , like new , for sale .

Tyres

Hanno asked what make of tyre my C30 was running on. The answer is that she is sitting on genuine 1943 Canadian Goodyear 10.50x16 NCD,s !. Whilst they are starting to show a few small cracks between the bars of the tread, they appear fine otherwise. I for one, am very interested in the thought of possibly replacing them, so I shall be contacting Steve.
Thanks for the heads up Hanno
Keith

Bad news, Denamn will not make a run because they would have to retest the tire for new D.O.T. specs. they are not willing to do that, so if anyone can think of an application that would require a few thousand tires they would probably do it. Thank you for trying to support the cause.

Thanks for the tip, David. I suspect these are the same Denman tires - worth checking, though. When was the ad published?

Thanks,
Hanno

super dave 21-09-04 22:34

The magazine is the latest october issue and i don't believe he sells denman tires. His ad says that they (wallace wade) were formerly McCrearry tires of Indiana.

I think McCreary are now known under the name Specialty Tires of America.

Wallace Wade is trying to do the same thing I am. He is reffering to the denamn tire. I will call him and see how manyy he wants to get made. Right now Denamn won't even make a minimum order of 135 because they do not want to retest the tire for the DOT

I suspect the C15TA of the Virginia Museum of Military Vehicles has these tyres fitted. Lookin' good....

Richard Farrant 01-11-04 21:21

Does anyone know of a source in UK of 10.50-16 road tread tyres? They are for the front wheels of an Austin K2. The last new ones I saw were made by General and fitted to a Bedford OXD.

I would be grateful of any leads.

Richard

Yes on Milweb

Hi Richard
There was an ad on milweb a couple of weeks ago by a guy selling five 10.50-16.00 "sand tyres" but when I spoke to him he told me that two of them were road pattern and that they had to go as he's moving to New Zealand.he's in Yorkshire.if you can't find the ad I might still have his number.
Matt.

Flotation tyres

The recurrent interest in the SS Thistlegorm led me to look over some of the websites regarding this wreck. In many of the pics, I can't help but notice the dozens of new tyres, both loose and fitted to vehicles. Did I read somewhere that seawater is actually a good preservative for natural rubber as found in old tyres? How many other shipwrecks must be around with their holds full of new tyres?

Heads up...... 10.50 x 16 tires......

Start saving empty beer bottles.....

Wallace Wade from Dallas Texas is advertising that the infamous ... elusive.... 10.50 x 16 8 ply Chevron tires will be available in March 2007..... $172 US FOB factory in Indiana Penn.
(which may be an advantage to us close to the US Border....)

ad appears in latest MV magazine issue #119.......

..O.D. 37 3/4" tread 8 1/2" Tubeless

Maybe he will include flaps and tubes for full 5 tire sets....
...about $1100 with tax and exchange...plus freight and possible custom.....

If they are USA made they should not be a problem importing to Canada.....

*****GEOFF.... you may want to merge this with the old tire thread pertaining to the 10.50......

What am I going to tell the wife now....!!!!!

Poor guys in Australia.... will have to send them pictures.....

Urban Myth?

Bob,

Been into the wobbly pop? Surely you jest. Next thing you will be telling us there is a Santa Claus. OK, the wife just left...I think a set of them would look nice on the HUP (considering there are two on the rear now).

Good info to know. ROAD TRIP!

Fitting

Interesting to see that they were fitted with the chevron outer ends at the leading end, front and rear of the trucks.

Neil Ashley 15-01-07 13:54

Can anyone confirm please if these tyres fit on Canadian rims without any additional work?

Also has anyone made any enquires yet on if the company are willing to supply to the UK.

I am thinking about a set for my C15TA.

Bob Carriere 15-01-07 16:19

Good Day Neil

..... the tyres look so much better than the current bar tread that beleive me they will fit.... even if I have to use Vaseline or KY jelly and a nail file they will fit......

Whether they will ship to the UK or abroad is a big question. It took Wade almost 2 years to bring this project to conclusion. Somewhere along the line I read that they had to fork out the $$ to run a minimum 600 tires to be able to get road certification from the USA government. I assume that this is the initial run and now that the molds are available subsequent runs willbe easier based on demands.

The big question is whether they can be exported and what legal requirements will need to be met in the UK or anywhere else for that matter. A private individual may be able to bring in a set purchased from another individual collector... but it may be problematic to have a dealer ship to the UK.

Of course none of the above includes the shipping cost and the profit slice taken by everyone who handles them.

Bottom line money talks...... if there is a way to make money I don't see why Wade would not sell them abroad .. for a cost of course.

You might want to contact them directly.... maybe you could become the exclusive distributor for the UK.....
try...WWW.wallacewade.com

The web site is very basic but at least you can dialogue directly with them ...... once the North American market is saturated they maybe very interested in shipping abroad. Good Luck.

BoB C.

I'm available to help

As I've stated in previous threads, I'm willing to help any MLU member acquire that which is available in the U.S. and not elsewhere. Mr. Wade's shop is a 1/2 hr. drive from where I live and I've delivered tyres for Wallace to MV collectors at events that I've attended around Texas. If difficulties arise ordering directly from Mr. Wade, I'll be more than happy to aid y'all.
Just an F.Y.I., I've recently discovered a fine brew from the Netherlands; Tilburg's Dutch Brown Ale from Bierbrouwerij de Koningshoeven b. v., just in case I do get help anybody out and they wish to show their appreciation. Y'know, just in case.
