In Search of this Engineers bridging trailer
 

Good day,

I am, on behalf of others in parts foreign and distant, am trying to find this trailer type, so as to salvage certain brake specific parts from it, unavailable in that country.

These trailers were used by Canadian Engineers for transport of certain bridging trailer components including pontoons, the trailer tilted to dump at the waters edge. The same chassis and axles were used on non tilting trailers also.

There were couple of these in Ed's scrap yard on the Dwyer Hill Road but as yet I have not been there recently, Google earth shows some considerable change since I was last there so my hopes are not high and hence me casting the net wider and my posting here.

I wonder if any remain as monuments and wonder if a base would allow removal of brake parts to help keep another unit going as the parts dont hold the trailer up just stop it moving so could likely be removed and wheels put back on. Just think out aloud.

Any help gratefully received.

according to my search on Google earth, as of last passing, 31 Combat Engineer Regiment has two of these trailer out back as they did when I visited a bunch of years ago. Hmmmm

Streetview doesn't allow a view of them.

Since it is a relatively modern trailer made specialy for the military in relatively small numbers it would be very unlikely that the brakes were unique to just that trailer family. The manufacturer would have bought the brakes (and almost certainly the complete axle assy) from one of the axle manufacturers. Do the hubs have anything written on them as a starter ?

In Canadian service GKN Sankey FV 2420 trailers were used to transport the Class 16 Air Portable Bridge. According to the DND Data Sheet the brakes were manufactured by Girling.

Years ago I owned one of the Sankey bridging trailers. Memory may be a poor tool but my memory of that trailer was that it had impact/overrun hydraulic brakes and looked of lighter construction than the trailer Robin is showing. Also, my memory of the securing system doesn't match the trailer Robin shows. If the pictured trailer can be more fully identified it will be easier to help.

The trailer that the parts are for is refered to as a MGB trailer (Medium Girder Bridge). The axles were supplied by Meritor and looking at a parts list the brake components were Girling. Trying to cross reference the Girling numbers to commercial parts has not been fruitful. The previous military owners of the trailers in question removed the brake shoes before disposal due to asbestos linings, but in the process a number of other components and springs were lost. So to find a trailer and remove all the required parts is an easier option than chasing for a large number of individual components.
I passed the enquiry to Robin as he said he knew of some in Canada, having tried in the UK (obvious place to first try) I drew blanks. The person requiring these parts is actually in Australia.
