puzzled

hi, thanks ron for the pics, I have since borrowed that exact same seat cushion you have sent a picture of. I have also got an original cover, which i think is a rear square seat cover.

The seat picture you have sent a picture of, could it be a T16 carrier cushion or a late universal carrier cushion?. The reason i ask is it is made from different material than a 1941 cushion and has chrome snaps on the back.

my seat frames have two 'lift the dot' securing pins on the front of the frame, the seat cushion must of been secured by these, the rear seat cover i borrowed would tie up with the front seat frames as it has two 'lift the dot' flaps at the front and two cutouts at the rear for hooking over, but it is a square shape with piping all the way round.

I also have a original front seat back cushion and a new old stock very rear seat pad, what is suprising about this is, it has not seen the light of day for 68 years, dated 1941 and shows the true seat colour which is a bright bottle/emerald green.

if anyone can tell me different i plan to make a front cushion based on my original carrier rear cushion and make it the same shape as ron's pictured cushion, and have two tabs with 'lift the dot' fastners on the front (straight at the front curved at the rear).

any comments, i will try and post some pics of what i have.

cheers kevin. :bang:

take your seats

Hi, Since checked out the carrier FUC-03 parts catalogue illustations 49 and 50 shows ron's seat cushion, interestingly it shows a spring type pad, co1uc 105812 and a pad, co1uc 105813. i think i might have both these items fitted with desert use seat covers?????, see thread 'seats for Mcdells'.

these seat covers are in the washing machine as we speak !, 90 degrees wash to remove years of grime, hope they dont shrink.

I have a feeling nothing is hard and fast, with different manufactures and year changes i guess variations are expected.

if anyone can contribute anything here to 'bottom this one out' much appreciated.

Also got a rear wooden seat back original for a sutton harness if anyone needs dimensions.

Also were can you get those lift the dot fastners, We need the ones for the wooden boards which attach via the threaded set screws, i have looked at most suppliers which do not supply this type of 'dot', see 'seats for Mcdells' thread, Jordans posted a picture up.

Kevin make me some matey... :)

Kevin contact Paul Beck at Vintage Supplies ( google). He sells lift the dot fasteners. Items 130 to 136 in his catalogue. Ron

Kevin

You mention the seat frame with the Lift the Dot fastners on the front edge. I think these were on 1943 and up Carriers. My seat frame is dated 42 and it doesn't have them. As for the cusions having the tabs. Again I think there was probably a change in 1943 to incorporate the tabs. The parts manual doesn't show them at all. Also I think the CMP seat cusions had the same tabs. Perhaps they just started using CMP seat cusions.

As for the colour. Ive posted up a picture of what the original should look like. its quite a bright green.

As for the Lift the Dot fastners with the srews on the backside. I don't think they make them anymore. All that I have found are the externaly threaded studs.

Ron Pier 11-05-09 10:31

See my previous post! 'Vintage Supplies' has the whole range of lift the dot's listed

I Have two NOS seat back covers, dated 1941. They are like you say, in a bright emerald green with a shiney surface.

Ron Pier 11-05-09 12:32

I just checked on my carrier seat frames, they also have the two lift the dot buttons on the front edges. My carrier is 44.

This is the correct kind for the seat backs. As far as I know they do not make these anymore. It would be nice as they would be the most secure to use.

Hi, The canadian carriers rear seat backs and square bottom seat panels, were they ever painted?. I have an original seat back in 5 layer ply, stamped on the back with its part number, it shows no signs of ever being painted in olive drab or any other colour, would a quick coat of linseed oil surfice on my new panels.

I have another fact i have discovered during researching these seats is that some original wartime carrier shots show the, four lift the dots at the top of the seat others show five, i guess the 5 are were the opening if for filling with horse hair, any comments please.

i will try and get some pictures later today.

Hope this helps.

From the post above it says that Canadian carriers had square seats as opposed to the round front ones in the Brit carriers? Is this correct for all Canadian carriers or just specific models ie MKI's or MkII's etc? Thanks in advance... Harold

Jordan Baker 29-05-09 04:39

I don't think he was refering to the seat cushions as being square shaped. its the wooden panles that fit into the seat frames that are square. All pictures I have ever seen show the one side as being round.

pzrwest 29-05-09 04:45

Thank you for the info on the seats

MKII* Carrier Seats

Hey Guys

I have 2 original seat cusions in mine and they are both square on the bottom and have part Numbers.

Adam

kevin powles 29-05-09 18:48

Adame, any chance of a pic of your seat cushions, i have made my seat backs and one cushion copied from the one i borrowed, same as the one pictured by Ron.

I understand that there are seven layers of padding material in rons seat cushions this to me looks like 'hemp'. Brownish natural fibre i think this is what they also used in the gun butt brackets, boys rifle rest, fuel tanks etc. You can still buy this stuff used as eco freindly insulation. Makes me think that the felt i have seen on restored carriers is too white, get yourself some 'hemp' fibre board, looks spot on.

I'll send Pics

HI Kevin

I'll send you some pics. Mine have a black type of horse hair material. I dont think it horse hair though it just looks it.

Should have them by tomorrow.

Cheers

Couple of questions.

#1 How thick is the cushion for the seat backs for the driver/gunner.
#2 How thick is the back cusion in the rear of the MK1 carrier. This is the one that measures approx 12"L x 6"W

I’ve had a friend make some seat backs from some canvas which I’ve painted with a flexible boat hull paint to replicate the finish of the wartime seats, has any one got a source for the lift the dot with the correct type of male fastner that screws through the wood, pictured earlier in this thread.

Cheers

www.scovill.com

You can order milspec black finish.
The posts are available as threaded base or screw, be careful of the post/screw length.
Original Canadian manufactured universal carrier seat backboard examples are observed with threaded posts.

Michael R. 22-02-18 20:00

Have a look at post #15 and others in the MK-I* carrier seat thread ...

Ron Pier 22-02-18 22:43

I've bought them from 'Vintage Supplies' https://www.vintagecarparts.co.uk/se...y=lift+the+dot

Ron

kevin powles 23-02-18 00:26

Thanks’ I’ll check those places out.

Lynn Eades 23-02-18 07:28

Kevin, you can buy the LTD body with two lengths of legs (don't know the proper names) If your material is thick you will need the long legged ones.
The black ones look good, but the originals were nickel.
