Rear axle inner oil seals for CGT
 

Terry Gibbons is new here on MLU. To get him started I am posting his wanted ad:

"I am wanting some rear inner oil seals for the rear axel on my 1940-41 Chevrolet FAT.

I found a website before but having A problem in locating it now I believe it's in the Netherlands I wonder if you could point me in the right direction thank you"

LWD had them under part number 5802270, however I don't see them presently on their site. Perhaps they got missed on the updating of the site's format.
As far as I know, they are the only source for these. I bought a reasonable supply for myself and have 8 sitting on my desk here at the museum. The seal is also used on the Bren carriers.

Rob, are we talking about the BB-1175-C inner hub seals? If so Macs keep them under 64-31970. I haven't checked to see if it still current, but cant see why they wouldn't be. There are a few different numbers for these, as I recall.

If so don't let the lack of this seal stop you from moving forward on the truck. Reason I say this is one of my C60 trucks is missing this one but I don't know which truck. This seal has been sitting on the shelf, left over from over hauling one of the trucks. It has been on the shelf for just under 10 years, removed because the leather was ripped.

Now for the funny part neither trucks has leaked lube into the rear brakes. Now on the C60S with the radio box I'm not surprised because it gets lots of miles but only on the road, and little to no cross slope. Now the C60L has had lots of pretty sever cross slope operation and no sign of any lube leaking.

PS If you have ever wondered why many of my parts photos have a map as a back ground. I use them as clean work surfaces because I've got cases of out of date maps.

No, it is the wiper seal that stops oil from getting to the bearings from the diff. Here is a photo of one that I garnered off a different section of MLU...I believe it is Bob's photo. They are also used on the Ford UC. They are not used on the Ford trucks because they use seals internal to the axle tube, requiring you to split the Timken Banjo diff in half. Not a job you want to do again and again.



The BB1175 seals from Mac's were a bargain a few years back. I think they were charging something like $5 a piece. I ordered those in to NAPA here once and they wanted $75 a piece. I have a stack of them sitting out in the shed now (the $5 ones, not the $75 ones).

Actually, you guys might be right. He did ask for "inner axle seals", so in this case it will be the BB1175 (hub seal). I do find that guys often use the wrong terminology on the various seal locations, so it really is up to Terry to specify which he is after.

Terry make sure you order on the full part number BB-1175-C. If you leave off the "C" suffix, you will get a different seal.
Rob, there is a different type of outer seal as well. See pic.
There is a cast iron outer that turns with the hub while the steel center stays static.

Terry be aware that the outer ends of the axles (hubs, brakes etc.) are Ford.
