I'm guessing that the master cylinder may have been an "off the shelf" part. If this is correct and you can find out the other uses (have you tried a search on the VW/Audi part numbers in the assembly - either the whole thing or parts) it may be easier to locate parts for repairing your cylinder. An example of this is that many early VW Rabbit (Golf) parts had Audi Fox or 80 (I think) origins. It might also be useful to figure out the original designer of the system Bosch? Ate? Girling? Brembo? etc. to better cross reference outside the VW empire. I no longer have the manual for that Rabbit but recall that there were two distinct brake systems using different manufacturer's components.

Based on my early Rabbit experience ATE/Ate looks reasonable as the original manufacturer. I've no proof that the Iltis is this way but would guess that both master and wheel cylinders might be the same manufacturer.
I did a google on "VW 183-611-019" and came to http://www.iltis.co.uk/?paged=7 that suggests the master is similar/identical to an Audi 100, explains some of the dimensions and mentions rebuild kits. The last 6 of the part number are the same and the first three different. In VW speak, do the first three equate to vehicle type, i.e. is an Iltis a type 183? Does it help you?
For copper washers, good OEM or jobber washers (for CMP we use Malmberg as supplier) may be softer and seal better at lower banjo bolt torques than Princess Auto washers.
For the wire brush in the cylinder bores, I would be happier with a brush softer than the casting bore to reduce risk of damage. Brass brush?

Dear Stuart,

Have you tried the jobber route of after market cross reference parts available?

If the bores are pitted will you be going the route of stainless sleeves? Do you need a source for having that done?

Will you be switching up to Dot 5 and if not why not?

Thanks
