WW2 Artillery Vehicle Marking Question
What would the tactical sign for an HUW signals van in an Anti-tank RCA regiment look like circa 1944? Canadasoldiers.ca has markings listed for a towed (ie. field) regiment, that being S2, S3 or S4 on a red over blue rectangle. Would this be the same for anti-tank and anti-aircraft regiments?

Bruce,
I have a History book of the 5th Canadian anti-tank Regiment. There are a few photo's in it with vehicles. I am not sure if it is the type of information you are looking for but some nice photo's. The history book has the units history from Canada to service overseas. If I ever find the time to read a book, this is one I hope to read someday! Regards,Derk |

Great stuff Derk...
I love pic of the 17 pdr. gun and the No. 27 limber.
|
Rob,
I thought you would like that photo! Derk |
In post #3, it does not appear to be an International half track pulling the limber and 17 Pdr. Can anyone confirm?

Internationl halftrack
Looks like an International to me as the front mudguards are wrong for a White.

Good eye Chris. I was looking for the rounded rear corners. My old eyes could not make out if the front fenders were skirted or not.

Bruce, bringing this back to your question, I believe the sigs tac sign was common to all types of RCA regiments.

Sigs vehs tac signs
I'd go along with Bill. The RCA was pretty standardised on such matters although there is some variation in Ack-Ack markings. Ubique! Mike

HUW Arty Unit Sign
Bruce, just to slightly adjust your original idea for an A/T unit, how about this?
4 Fd Regt supported 2 Cdn Inf Div during the Normandy and NW Europe campaigns The organization of 2 Div contained 4, 5 and 6 Bde. One of 4 Bde's bns was the Royal Regiment of Canada. How's that for a personal link to your HUW? Usual rectangle, white over blue, with red 42 superimposed. Credit: Barry Beldham. |
Well that would certainly do. I somewhat chose the 2nd CID for its connection with the glorious Royal Regiment of Canada anyway but picked the anti-tank regiment RCA because it's them and anti-aircraft regiments that the bible (CMP Vehicle Data Book) says used HUW radio vans. If I can confirm field regiments used them too I'm in!! Of course I could always go 2nd Div. RCCS.

Found these documents last night while researching.
The first one is dated April 1944. I guess the plan was to phase out the use of the HUW with 15cwt FFW trucks. Attachment 96046 This second group of documents is from Sept 1943 Attachment 96047 Attachment 96048 Attachment 96049 |
Artillery War Establishment
The Canadian War Establishment for a Field Artillery Regiment of towed 25-pdr guns, II/172/2 dated July 1943, indicates that a regiment had 21 HUWs. The next re-write, which included the Establishment being renumbered, showed that they were no longer being used. The new Establishment, II/190B/1 dated March 1944, now had 12 Truck 15-cwt FFW, an extra seven jeeps for 16 in total, nine Trucks 15-cwt Armoured, and two more Truck HUCs. Overall the number of B Vehicles decreased from 123 to 114, mostly through the reduction of motorcycles from 44 to 26.

My grandfather served in the 96th Bty, 5th A/Tk Regt. I’ve been trying to collect as much info and history as possible over the years but have not been able to find this specific book in all of my searches. Do you have any leads on where I could look? Photos are another important piece, as I haven’t been able to find many at all of my grandfather - William (Bill) Skelly. Any help/advice would be awesome! Tim |
Book on it's way to you........
Tim,
I sent you the book in the mail today. Hopefully you will find some usefull information in it. Better you have it than sitting on my bookshelf! Good luck with your search. Regards,Derk |
Hi Boys!
Any example (pics) for markings of this unit(77) on CMP Gun Tractors? http://famecities.com/wp-content/upl.../FAT_dio_7.jpg http://famecities.com/2018/01/2319/ Thanks in advance! |

AoS Markings
You have to be careful using restored vehicles as a source of information for AoS markings on Canadian wartime vehicles as quite a few carry spurious markings that reflect the owners' personal taste rather than historical accuracy.

Hi Ed
Many thanks for your quick reply. I am looking for historical precision to place the correct insignia of this 5th antitank regiment. But as you say, sometimes we find a salad of badges and markings |
